A big Thankyou to everyone who has shown an interest in becoming a site news poster - I am currently in the process of setting up a username and password for you, which you will receive shortly via Instant Message.

This post is basically a small guide to let you know how to use the news column submission system to add news to the main page.

First of all, you can access the system either by using this link :

http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/cgi-bin/newspro/newspro.cgi

or by clicking on the "Submit News Item" link at the top of the news column on the main page.

A screen will appear asking you to enter your username and password. Fill in the boxes, and then click login.

Next click on "Click here to go to the main page" if it hasn't already taken you there.

To submit a news article, click on "Submit News".

There is considerable on-screen help so you shouldn't have much problem getting around.

When submitting an article, select "Yes" for the "Create Talkback Page" part.

Remember, you do not need to write anything significant in a news item -  copy and pasting the first few lines / paragraph of the article as a brief summary will be more than sufficient.

To add a link with your news submission, you need to include a line such as the following :

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.thearticleurl.com"> Click here to view the complete article.</a>

Replace the URL and link message with whatever fits best. If you have experience with HTML you can do other fancy things, but in general you won't need to.

The Mars Microorganisms post at the top of the column at the moment is a good example of a typical news post.

If you have any difficulties, or if you would like to become a news poster and haven't done so already, let me know via E-Mail, IM or by replying to this thread.

I just posted a few news articles, and the one about the Voyager 25 mark i couldn't find a link for. Should i just link it to the forum and post it under news?
Mentalcase

MC,

Yeah, if you have an article without a link, making a forum thread and linking to that is probably the best thing to do, unless the article is really small.

To all news posters,

Just in addition to the help guide above, make sure you add the linking code after the article summary and not before it, otherwise the whole thing becomes one giant link.

and thanks to everyone who's posted on the news column so far - keep those news items coming.  :)
