Its been verified that it is a 40GB model.

I wonder what Microsoft is going to do about this.

It can be $100 and it still wouldn't sell with its 3 worth getting games. Im still not paying $400 for just Ratchet and Clank, and maybe Warhawk.

Oh and the 360 will bundle Marvel Alliance and Forza 2 with every system.
AztecInca
Well if this does turn out to be true it doesn`t mean much for us gamers down under. The PS3 still costs $999 down here with Sony refusing to lower the price even after reductions overseas, its pathetic. Not only did our region get stuffed around on the backwards compatibility of PS2 and PS1 games on the PS3 but we also have to pay the most by a massive margin over the other regions. Australia had been a massive Sony supporter over the past two generations yet we are treated like this. No wonder the Wii, 360, DS and PS2 are all easily outselling the PS3 down here. Anyway at least this is good news news for the American gaming community.

By that last statement, you are implying that microsoft should be worried? Microsoft made the money along time ago. Man, thats cool sony is droping the price after the hard realty that $600 for a console might make people think twice about the differences between the two system. I will not deny the PS3 is a better system then the 360 and the Wii, but when the system launched for $600 that was just too steep. $600 i could get a 360 some accessories and a game or two. Lets face it $600 is rent or a car payment. Hell, $600 will get you a decent labtop from dell. So now that the price will drop i will be able to buy one for my console collection. I'm not knocking sony but it was a bold move and they knew it. Arogance only gets you so far. Now this is just a view for the american market. In the japanese market it did well.

Are you implying that the PS3 has done well in Japan or that arrogance does well in the Japanese market. The Wii is outselling the PS3 by 4:1 and the margin is growing every week. While the PS3 may be outselling the 360, Japan dislike Microsoft and essentially they cannot even grab 5% of the Japanese market. The DS, Wii and PSP completly own the Japanese gaming market right now and have done ever since they launched. The PS3 had a good launch but since then has had horrific sales.

Incorrect. None of the three systems is better than the other overall, they all have their own pro's, cons and exclusive content which appeal to different people. You may prefer the PS3 to the others however that does not make that system any better than the others.

they probably wont have to do a single thing. with there better game selection it will probably still sell better then the PS3. i think Sony is just getting desperate rolleyes.gif

Actually with the cheaper falcon chips now in 360s, MS could do another price drop and not loose as much money. However, with halo 3, and a bunch of other killer games, they dont seem to need to.

Microsoft is so secure in it's market right now, they don't have any need to drop it at all, just like the Wii. I don't foresee a price drop until sales start to drop heavily, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
Ashigaru
If they are so secure in the market why has there been a steady decline in 360 sales since the beginning of the year?
InHuman
Wow the price drops are coming pretty fast...I feel bad about buying the Wii so early...no good games and lackluster graphics...mabey ill go the 2 system route next gen.

Well the console has been out for around a year longer than both the PS3 and Wii and with both those consoles entering the market, they no longer have a monopoly on the new console market and as such their sales drop. However as their sales are so much greater than that of the PS3 and with a number of high-quality games already released plus numerous more coming out in the next 6-12 months their position in the market is quite secure. Sadly the same cannot be said for the PS3 as Sony are now shifting more promotional dollars and resources away from the PS3 and towards extending the life-span of the PS2 which is easily outselling the PS3. However with these price-cuts and future titles for the PS3 I forsee the fortune of the PS3 improving greatly next year, yet I just don`t see it being able to knock of either the Wii or 360 in terms of sale and market penetration.

There are numerous quality games on the Wii and many with good graphics, it will never be able to match the graphics of 360 and PS3 games but it is capable of some very impressive graphics. Here's just some of the games that are of a high-quality on the Wii, Zelda:TP, Resident Evil 4, Excite Truck, Godfather, Mario Strikers: Charged, Scarface, Call Of Duty 3, Metroid Prime:Corruption, Super Paper Mario, SSX:Blur, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Madden 07 & 08, NBA Live 08, My Sims, plus many more.

In the next three months alone some of the upcoming games for the Wii include Super Mario Galaxy, Battalion Wars II, Super Smash Brows Brawl, Guitar Hero III, Zack & Wiki, Manhunt 2, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Ghost Squad, Lego Star Wars: Complete Saga, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Rayman Raving Rabbids 2, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, SoulCalibur: Legends, Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, Trauma Center: New Blood, Nights: Journey of Dreams and many more.

If this is actually true, then I may have to consider saving up for one, although there are many more important things I need to save for first.

Why should they do anything? PS3 is still more expensive and with their already extensive library and up coming games many of which are on both platforms as well. Also seeing as how MS is actually now turning a profit on their hardware they could likely lower their price as well putting further pressure on Sony. Already if people want they can buy the 360 core system for under 300 dollars.

Sony needs more then justa price cut and 1 or 2 awesome games.

Shakezulah are you refering to the Wii or PS3 there. All the Wii games I mentioned are either already released or will be released in the US in the next 3 months. A number of them also contain quality online multi-player which is finally making an impact on a home Nintendo console. I would definately advise purchasing a Wii from my own experience as well as for the current and future games library. However the other consoles which I know you own one of, the 360 I believe, are both also worth purchasing and I hope to eventually own all three. I should be getting a 360 next year and the PS3 in another year or two as its price is still $999 down under which is simply too much.

What self-respecting gamer would buy the core system?

You do realize that 360 have been up for the month of August, beating the PS2, and for September I doubt Halo 3 couldn't do anything but help. Reports have been saying 360 beat ,Wii for the last week or so.

Not me but perhaps people who don't have the money to buy a high end 360 or a low end PS3... It plays games the same it just doesn't have a hard drive is all...

I was refefrring to a PS3. I've found myself wanting a Wii less and less considering the huge lack of games that interest me. I'll probably own one eventually, but for now, I'd rather have a PS3.

As yes, I do own a 360. Probably the best purchase I've ever made, haha.

Most of those games I am either not interested in, or they have been realased and I have been dissapointed..

There is only a handful Im even going to consider buying...This console needs more AAA type effort..I want my epics..I understand that its VERY early in teh consoles lifespan..but im sick of the hordes of kiddy-filler games..

40GB PS3 confirmed for Australia-New PS3 model to cost Aussies A$699.95 ($629); no confirmation of 60GB price drop.
By Randolph Ramsay, GameSpot AU
Posted Oct 5, 2007 8:18 pm PT

Gamers in the UK finally received confirmation overnight of the upcoming availability of the oft-rumoured 40GB version of the PlayStation 3, and it looks like Australians won't be far behind in receiving the new console.

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCE Australia) has confirmed that the new PS3 model will be available down under from October 11, and will cost gamers A$699.95. The 40GB model will not be compatible with PS2 games, will come with only two USB slots, and has no multimemory card port.

And while consumers in the UK will also be receiving a price cut of £76 off the revised 60GB PS3 bundle (which will come with two games and one Sixaxis controller), there was no word from SCE Australia about a similar drop for Australians.

Calls to SCE Australia to confirm a possible new 60GB price point and for more information about the 40GB model were not returned as of time of publication. Check GameSpot soon for more details.

No backwards compatibility, only two USB slots and no multimemory card port and we are paying $200 more than US gamers for the 40 GB version, quite a rip-off although its at least a step in the right direction, well slightly.

I brought my boys a PS2 about 3 - 4 yrs back and it's been used and abused since then, in fact its running very sluggish.
Come Xmas i've promised them a new one. I could Google all the specs & info on either PS3 or XBox 360 but i thought it better to ask some of the you guys first hand on which would be the better way to go in terms of value for money & game availability. I'd appreciate any feed back on it. thumbsup.gif

Thanks in advance. thumbsup.gif

It really comes down to the ages of your son's and their gaming preference's, and of course how much you are willing and capable of spending. The Wii and 360 are considerably cheaper than the PS3 down under. The 360 however has been out the longest and as such has the largest games library, with many high-quality games as well as a very impressive online service. The Wii and PS3 have only been out for less than a year and as such have significantly smaller game libraries and online services. That will of course improve as time goes on however. I would advise checking out the specs. prices, current and future titles as well as online services for each of the new genration of consoles with your son's so you can together make an informed choice. thumbsup.gif

The boys love them first person shooters eg Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Area 51, Half Life 1&2 and Turok etc, then theres all my sons games.
I know these games are getting on a bit but i assume PS3 takes most of em? But theres games like Halo 3 i'm hanging to get my hands on(for my sons of course) innocent.gif and thats only on XBox. The games that each players take has always been a bit of an issue and of course the one with better graphics. So basically if i go XBox all those PS2 games(approx 35)go in the bin, but if buy PS3 i get to keep the old games and etc etc...I think i'll go with the XBox. They better appreciate. lol!

Thanks again Aztec. thumbsup.gif

This generation the Xbox 360 and PS3 are pretty much tied in terms of hardware specs. Different people will argue that one console is greater than the other because of some vague performance benchmark that doesn't really actually mean anything. The PS3 has Blu-Ray technology as opposed to the Xbox 360 which is still using DVDs, but as of yet games aren't large enough to take full advantage of the Blu-Ray and no one really knows how much of a benefit it will be. It might just be the case that you're spending an extra $100 for the leisure of having games come on one disc instead of two, we'll find out in a few years.

The Xbox has a a far superior online service (Xbox Live), but it has a fee of $50/year while the PS3 service is free. It all comes down to which has the titles you prefer. The Xbox has a wider selection of games, which IMO are also much better than what the PS3 has to offer. But that's just my opinion. I wouldn't compare the Wii against any other console this generation because it's just so different.

Why couldn't they just make the decision easier and release a PS-thWii-60? grin2.gif

Spec wise both machines are amazing, in regards to FPS though 360 will be getting most of the same games as PS3 and it's cheaper. UT3, Bioshock, COD3/4, Halo 3 and others are available or going to be available for 360.

The only truly awesome games coming out for PS3 that makes it different are FF and MGS4... Also seeing as how the 40 gig will not be compatible with PS2 games you will end up putting them in the bin anyway.
REBEL
Thanks for all the feed back boys. thumbsup.gif

So basically tech spec wise between PS3 & XBox 360 are about the same, just a question p/s choice of games availability and or which one gives you the better games.

I did some snooping around on current prices and found that theres a lot of additional accessories that come into the cost factor...

The graphics on the PS3 are awesome!(first time i actually scoped it out)...the boys are gonna love it*cough cough*...
