Ok, this happened ages ago, and I never really thought about it again until now.
My mum and I were driving home one night and there was this large light in the sky, probably about a half or a third the size of the moon. I remember asking her what it was and she said it was probably a planet or something, that was extra big at the time, only I don't remember reading anything about it. I know it wasn't the moon, as it was too small, and i doubt that it was some kind of UFo as i'm sure other people would have seen it.
Does anyone know if it's possible for the moon to appear really small, or if planets can appear large when their orbit is closer to the earth? These are the only things I can think of, and I guess i think it's weird that it wasn't in the paper or anything if there was going to be an unusual light in the sky, like when there's an eclipse or something and its on the news and in the paper.
If anyone has any ideas, that'd be great, or if there's any websites that have the info about eclipses, planets etc for each year, i think this happened about 5 years ago, and i live in Queensland Australia, so if anyone can find any sites with info on this it'd be appreciated, coz now that i've thought about this again it'll take me a while to get it out of my mind and i'd love to find out more.

as soon as you said that, my brain switched on.

I know you mentioned this happened 5 years ago, but I also live in QLD...on the Gold Coast. As of late you may have noticed that the moon has changed colour (to a red) and has expanded to three times it size (ironically I mentioned this in another thread)?

This happens early in the evening, and is caused by distortion effects when light hits the atmosphere. Remember that the moon and planets do not have their own light source. Therefore the distortion effect could occur when the light is travelling to the moon or planets, or when it is reflected back to us.

I notice this happening a few times each year, and is not restricted to the moon alone. Similar effects can happen to the planet Venus, causing it to swell in size and shape.

I'm not saying that this is what you saw, but it is a very approachable theory.

Thanks for the info, and i had also though of it maybe being venus at a larger size, I just think it's odd that i didn't read anything about it at the time.
