Rochester, N.H. -- A man who police said has been accumulating garbage for decades in the front yard of his Rochester home has been jailed on contempt charges.
Neighbors said they have been fighting for years to get George Blaisdell to clean up his property. Now, he has been jailed while the city removes tons of trash that had spilled out onto the sidewalk, making it impassable.
Excavators had been working since Sunday to remove the trash and filled up a large trash bin eight times. Workers estimated that they would be cleaning up for about a week.
Blaisdell has been fighting efforts to clean up the property, filing several appeals. The city said the piles of trash were in violation of the health code, and he was eventually found in contempt.
Neighbors said Blaisdell is a packrat who refused offers to buy some of the trash. The garbage is now being hauled off at his expense, and the bill is expected to reach into the tens of thousands of dollars.
Blaisdell will remain in jail until the cleanup is finished and then be allowed to return home.
