rome was the most idotic civilisation ever. the only reason they were able 2 conquer other civilizations was that the carthaginians left behind a boat. the romans then studied the boat and made primitive boat that didnt even have a sail.

but does any1 have any ideas how they could have conquered nearly a quarter of the world

Well clearly this thread doesn't have history going for it. Maybe it could be closed?
C'mon... I never ask for that, but I am here!

Obviously either a highly uneducated person, or else someone who loves to get people's backs up. Otherwise, why else make such an asinine comment when Rome has had such an influence on society even today.

Well, at least the Romans (note the capitol R) could spell, create a gramatically correct sentence and didn't substitute numbers for words (witness "2 conquer" and "any1").
So, you're saying that if the Carthaginians hadn't left a boat on the Roman shore, those poor, ignorant proto-Italians would have still been pounding rocks together and exclaiming "ugh?"
That's laughable.
You're laughable.

LOL. ^Answered you own question...poorly. mellow.gif

I don't think ignorance could produce some of the architectural and technological marvels the Romans did. happy.gif

Is this topic supposed to be taken seriously? hmm.gif

Someone has studied the 'Age of empires' version of history.

"All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?"

I have a feeling that this thread isn't going anywhere good. I'll leave it open for a little while longer to see if a discussion bursts forth, but in the meantime, please try and refrain from Ad Hominem attacks.

Thanks in advance.

exactly if the carthiginians hadnt left behind a boat rome would still be left behind in the stone age and wouldnt have conquered smarter civilizations. thus equalling a smarter rome because they copied great civilizations like greece

ok, wait, hold on... yeah.. hes a moron.. but thats beside the point! I want to know more about this boat!!?? What boat... please, tell us more! Was it like one of those rafts they made on Lost? And explain HOW exactly you get an aqueduct from.. a boat....? Was there like.. a diagram etched into the side? Was there a wood pixie inhabiting the planks that taught them about schools and librarys? That must have been some boat!! Tell me everything, and provide links, cause I would love to find a boat that taught one how to sculpt Gods in marble and lay stones.. then concrete... for roads!!! And exactly HOW is it stupid to study something and learn from it in the first place.. I mean what you say is totally asinine.. but even if it WAS true it would take a fairly briliant mind to study something and recreate it accurately enough to work.. or even modify it to fit that persons own needs.

Oh, P.S....

Romans marched into Italy, east and west, and did very little sea travel, sea battle.. they fought, marched and conquered ON LAND.. they are famous for armor and formations.. what the heck are you going to do with a formation on a ship? Sorry, your boat theory doesn't hold water!

Though his crackpot assumption of the Romans Finding a Boat and then learning how to build boats is completely crazy, the Romans DID have a good and large navy. Their Navy was one of the most superior navies in the world during their times. havent you ever heard of Roman Galleons? What about reading about them in Asterix Comics??

Roman Navy - Source : wikipedia.org

QUOTE
Although the first sea engagement, the Battle of the Lipari Islands in 260 BC, was a defeat for Rome, the forces involved were relatively small. The fledgling Roman navy won its first major engagement later that year at the Battle of Mylae. Through the course of the war, Rome continued to win victories at sea and gained naval experience. Their string of successes allowed Rome to push the war further across the sea to Carthage itself.

At the beginning of the Second Punic War (218 BC - 202 BC), the balance of naval power in the Western Mediterranean had shifted from Carthage to Rome. This caused Hannibal, Carthage's great general, to shift the strategy, bringing the war to the Italian peninsula.

The Romans had one of the best Troop Movement capabilities in thier times. Actually its Hannibal who went on that idiotic march across the mountains.

Oh don't get me wrong, I know, but my point was while they did have a navy (Though if I recall it didn't stand up against the Egyptians), it was nothing compared to what they created and did on land.. HOW do you learn all that.. from a boat. If they had started with a single boat, like the OP says, they would have destroyed Egypt and prolly all of Asia, rather then Italy and Gaul. Yes, they did have the forces and the ships, but they where famous for their land battles!
Moon Monkey
The Carthagians would not have had boats if it wasn't for the Phonecians, who stem from the Sea Peoples who, according to one hypothesis, may have come from Italians.

Yes. Miliary discipline and organization coupled with a very well system of strategem and counter strategem on the battlefield. Add in some luck, and presto.

Maybe you should watch "Decisive Battles" on the History International channel. They often go over Roman battle tactics.

Does anyone know what "boat" he is referring to? What pivotal moment in history the ancient Romans apparently found a boat built by another civilization, and they reacted like the cavemen in 2001 a Space Odyssey? Is there actually any historical reference to Romans being inspired by another culture to this degree? I mean, I understand all cultures are built on the bones of those that went before them, that's a given. But this guy is making a specific reference and NOT supplying any info to back it up. Is it made up, or is there at least a tid-bit of history to back up such a claim?

No, it was there. Methinks he has been busted by the Mod-squad. (Maybe because I narced his royal weirdness out).
What I REALLY wonder is what motivates him. Maybe he's Greek? (Don't the Greeks and the Italians have some age-old feud, like the Turks and the Greeks?) I forget...
He sure does seem to hate Romans though...

Yeah, and if I read it right, he doesn't even know what boat he was talking about.. so he doesn't even know why! Oh well. Wish the post had stayed up so i could laugh at it more >.>

While we are waiting for more info on this boat can someone clear up a roman question for me. When I did latin at school the rumour was that no-one alive could actually hold a conversation in latin today and stay grammatically correct. Reading is no problem, or slowly writing but no-one could hold a flowing conversation on a subject not of their choosing, ie not a subject they may have learnened sentences and phrases parrot fashion about, does anyone think this is true ?

This has got to be one of the most entertaining threads I have read on here.

Maybe the boat was really a flying alien submersible, or maybe a ship from middle earth, and with in it held a magic crystal that once found, it would reveal all the ingredients for making a powerful civilization, who would then lead the world into evolution from there. The drooling, hairy Romans just happened to be the ones who found it.

I'm gonna write a book about it and post it on Crystalinks.

As Roj47 noted, it is most certainly in contention for the " most replies to a stupid OP " thread of the year award, I just wonder if the OP will show at the awards ceremony if he wins and whether he will bring the boat information with him, could be quite a night if he does.

The judges may have to rule on this and Roj47's posts as they are really just making up the numbers and may not count under competition rules (we might need 49 to be safe)

There's no reason they couldn't if they've studied well enough.
Now, pronunciation... nobody knows exactly what classical Latin would have sounded like.

My 3rd year latin teacher certainly believed he knew how it was pronounced as he would hit you round the back of the head or throw a board rubber at you if you mis-pronounced. It must be hard to flick through the possible endings automatically, me I always get my datives and ablatives mixed up no.gif

CENTURION:
What's this, then? 'Romanes Eunt Domus'? 'People called Romanes they go the house'?
BRIAN:
It-- it says, 'Romans, go home'.
CENTURION:
No, it doesn't. What's Latin for 'Roman'? Come on!

And with that... I think it's way past time to put this thread to bed.
