Full Version: Will religion cause the end of the world?

Well, the times are changing. Technology is advancing. Culture and attitudes are transforming.

Religion is staying the same.

I wonder though, can religion handle this "time travel"? It was intended for a much different time, when we didn't know much about the world and we had few answers to the many questions our existence gives us; a time when something we know as a mere illusion today might well be seen as a miracle from God. But nevertheless, religion has survived, and it is still the most extreme and important view in many peoples' lives today.

If you look at the current state of the world.. it's basically in a giant war over religion... Mainly Christianity and Islam. The united states is at "war" with religious extremists in Iraq, thanks to a government that would not be elected without the Christian vote. Atheistic Britain is getting fed up of political tolerance of excessive Muslim demands and complaints. The simple act of drawing and publishing a frank cartoon will cause widespread riots and protests and murder.
Of course, we're also in a nuclear age. There are 20,000 nuclear bombs in existence today. It would take a tiny fraction of those to send the civilized world hurtling into chaos. And as technology increases, they will become easier to make, even for rogue groups who want to use them.

And that brings the question to light.. does religion even care if the world ends? After all, if you feel that this earth is just a "bus stop" on your way to your destination of eternal heaven, what do you really care if that happens? Some religions even teach and speculate that the world WILL end soon, making its members even more comfortable with the idea.

So what does everyone think? Is religion going to be the end of the world? Am I exaggerating things?

No you are not, I think there is a high probability that what you say will happen very soon, in fact, there is less probability that it won't

i don't think religion will cause the end of the world BUT i feel that hate for religion might. like you said they are already getting fed up with it in places in europe. when religion gets outlawed sometime in the future i think...acutally i know this will cause i massive war, thus having a probability of ending the world. basicly we are all going to kill each other over the love or hate or religion, so yes religion will be half the cause the the world ending.

I think there are substantially more than 20000 nuclear weapons in exsistence. besides, if us humans are daft enough to exterminate each other for having opposing beliefs then perhaps we are not fit to be on this earth.
hope it never happens though. I quite like humans mostly.

They wish.

The influence of religion is diminishing, which is being made evident by the moaning, screeching and suicide attacks of the more fanatic.

I don't know but I feel that religion just might fire the first shot that will start the end of all wars. Then the rest would be for territory and trade rights.

isn’t that the goal of religion? that way they can be with jesus what ever they worship.

It's funny how it turns out in the end, nobody ever suspected Christ being the Antichrist.

noooo it won't cause the end of the world...... but it might cause the end of logic and reason.

that it already caused, but there is no place for reason and religion in one world, either they destroy each other, or
people destroy religion

Depends on what religion you are talking about. Druidry, Wicca, Buddhism, Hinduism, Eastern spirituality all have elements of balance in them. Not all religions are the same.

Religion is staying the same.

Is it? Look at the evangelical Christianity of today and compare it with Reformation era western Christianity.

It is simply a continuation of the East v. West conflict that has waged ever since the Persian Empire decided to cross the Hellespont. Don't expect it to end any time soon.

The world is not going to end anytime soon. Humans, as a species, like surviving too much.
