This fiery figure is being hailed as Pope John Paul II making an appearance beyond the grave. The image, said by believers to show the Holy Father with his right hand raised in blessing, was spotted during a ceremony in Poland to mark the second anniversary of his death. Details appeared on the Vatican News Service, a TV station in Rome which specialises in religious news broadcasts. Service director Jarek Cielecki, a Polish priest and close friend of John Paul II, travelled to Poland after hearing an onlooker had photographed the image. Father Cielecki said he was convinced the picture showed the former pontiff. "You can see the image of a person in the flames and I think it is the servant of God, Pope John Paul II," he said. The pictures were being broadcast continuously on Italian TV and also posted on religious websites, some of which crashed as thousands logged on to see for themselves the eerie figure formed by the flames. The bonfire was lit during a service at Beskid Zywiecki, close to John Paul's birthplace at Katowice, southern Poland, on April 2 - the second anniversary of his death. Hundreds had attended the ceremony. Gregorz Lukasik, the Polish man who took the photographs, said: "It was only afterwards when I got home and looked at the pictures that I realised I had something.
"I showed them to my brother and sister and they, like me, were convinced the flames had formed the image of Pope John Paul II. "I was so happy with the picture that I showed it to our local bishop who said that Pope John Paul had made many pilgrimages during his life and he was still making them in death."

This story has appeared even on some major magazines, here in italy. But I really don't think it is so impressive...
I agree with DizzaN and all the others, it's not even a half "miracle" or apparition.
It's like seeing faces in smoke or between the leaves of a bush.
The human mind always tries to give a meaning to the strange shapes we see...

The Pope waving from beyond the grave, in flames no less...i thought fire is was associated with 'burning' hell?
Maybe he just made a quick tour downstairs to try and straighten out the opposition?

That was my thought, he is waving from hell, but I wasn't think he was there on a tour. Maybe he is doing pendents for all the bad and dishonorable stuff he did in life.

The pope has become a naughty little boy.
No, in all seriousness now, I think it's just some strange shape made by the flames and it is strictly coincidence.
How did they get such a quick snapshot of this anyway? It may have lasted only half a second or less.
I think it's rather rubbish and the people exagerrate the subject. This is normal fire. No pope fire.

I agree,i just think it maybe the way the breeze or wind is moving the flames about.
Ah yes, well the evangelicals if they see this will have a field day making some comment about the Whore of Babylon which is what they consider the Catholic Church.

Being a Roman Catholic myself, I find this pretty absurd. It seems so many Christians these days will grab onto anything that will help bring there faith one step closer. Personally, if the Pope himself was trying to reach out from heaven and give us a message, it would not be through a millisecond apparation of a human body in a bonfire.

Exactly what I though, with fire comes, hell, comes the dark man himself. etc
I wouldnt be touching this one If I was those guys! lol
If JP2 was going to show himself I would of though he might manifest himself a little more gracefully.
"How many times have we seen the Pope wave like he does"?
It really looks like him though.

Um.... excuse me if I am wrong, (I'm only new to understanding religion and different faiths) But isn't it CATHOLICS that hold the Pope as the way to God/Jesus and Heaven, NOT Christians????
So why is it that you state 'so many Christians these days will grab onto anything'....
Christians don't believe that the way to God is through the Pope. To Christians a Pope would be a false idol wouldn't he?
As I said, I'm still learning so correct me if I am wrong

Catholics are Christians ( protestants ,catholics , Presbyterians, baptist , Mormons , branch davidians from waco ...they all fall under the christian banner) and the burning pope picture is funny but not worth deep thought!

I'm not religious by a long shot (thank god for that)...
But how pathetic & careless it is of the of the Daily Mail to allow this complete & total crap to actually be printed and placed in its paper no less. That Nick Pisa (the author of the story) should have his head buried up his ass right about now. Then they wonder why so many have/are turning away/against Catholic/Christian faith eh...
Just my ever so humble take on it. lol!

This was taken at a Bar B Q I had at my old apartment a couple years ago... Is this Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four trying to tell us something?
Or is it a message from the Four Horsemen of the apocalypse trying to tell me something!?
Naw we simply put to much lighter fluid, and got a cool looking fire, and thought we should snap a pic... People capture all kinds of shapes in photos of fire that to the human mind you can relate to another thing. That isn't the pope, and in my picture there were no horsemen or any members of the Fantastic Four.
The human imagination is an amazing thing... Almost as amazing as the stars above, and the depth of the ocean below...
