Hello all. Im new here, but I need help as something strange is going on.

The other day in work, I sliced open three of my fingers and had to go to the hospital for stitches. This made me think to back to my grandfather who died I when I was about 5 or 6 and whom I hardly remember or rarely think about. The reason it made me think of him is there are only two things I really remember about him. 1. He had half of a missing finger(hence the connection to my injury) 2.The smell of his cigars.

So I was talking to my wife about these two things today and ever since our conversation, I smell his cigars. I cant shake it, it is there. Is there some kind of link between sense of smell and the deceased? I read online where somebody said it could be a sign of a guardian angel. Anyone have any ideas?

Welcome to UM.........

It is hard to tell in your situation. You started to think of him, which brought up memories. It is known for investigators or ppl experiencing a haunting or a spirit to smell a fragrance of some kind. Sometimes perfume, cigars etc. A few questions you want to answer yourself, are you really smelling this?, Is there a logical reason as to why you are smelling this? (someone in the area smoking cigars).

This is kinda out there, but maybe you thinking of him was sorta a call to the afterlife. Thinking of him at a time of injury brought him to your side, even if the injury wasn't serious to begin with. Kinda out there, but just a thought.

Thanks for the reply.

Nobody around me was smoking cigars. I remember his cigars had a really ugly almost green color to them and that awful smell, but I was so young its hard to say whether or not what Im smelling is actually that type of cigar. I am thinking that maybe it is all in my head, or maybe because I so rarely think of him. I am going through a somewhat stressful point in my life healthwise(other than the fingers lol) so maybe he is watching over me or something?

A lot of possibilities. I was going to say the smell can be in your head. Sometimes when i remember certain things i can actually smell, or think i can smell that. Like when i played baseball, i can literally smell the baseball's cow-hide smell.

Especially when I was in the army, I would be at the PX grabbing a snack or something and near the register would be the alcohol. I had a bad experience a couple times with alcohol and i could literally smell and taste the alcohol. A friend of mine said I got really white like I was about to puke.

Some memories are good, some are bad lol, but however, you know either way its not something to worry about. Which i know you are not worried.

Even if it is in your head, its nothing to worry about mentally. Also, it wouldnt hurt to try and talk to him if you believe it is him. If he is there or not, might make you feel better.

Hi, and welcome to UM. It is a well known fact that loved ones do visit us from time to time, especially in time of need. Normally they come to us in dreams, or by scents, such as flowers, cigarettes and yes even cigars. For the most part they "visit" and dont hang around too long. I would say due to your injury, you mind called to him as you remembered his injury as well. I believe he is just letting you know he is watching over you. If I were you I would take comfort in that, its a good sign and nice to know they are still around us, when they feel the need...JN- yes.gif

Having read your statement, and knowing about health issues too. I must bring into light the power of the mind. We can link to things as a source of strength in times when we need it. Bringing into existence a variety of things we never thought possible. Just like some investigators link Poltergeist activity to the fact that there are teenagers in the home. The link to your grandfather, may be appearing to you at this time because you saw him in your youth as a strong and stable force. If for some reason you are unsure of what is going on or what is going to happen, you could be making this connection to him as a source of guidance and strength through a difficult time in your life.

I agree this is pure human emotion taking over a situation we all have to deal with atleast one time in our lives.

Tru has a very valid point. Your mind under extreme stress, can play tricks on you. You mentioned stress over health issues other than your accident....

On a personal note:

I don't know whether you are a believer or skeptic BUT maybe he is really watching over you in your time of need. I think you should embrace it. Isn't it a good thing to be loved by those in the afterlife?

Exactly my point, in times of great stress or peril, we look to those we once drew strength from, bringing their energy into being with our very own.

My Ex's house is haunted, that much we are sure. People have seen his mother in the house and asked who that woman was in the house and no one else was there. Well, I bring this up because after my mom died we would get faint wisps of the smell of roses, which were my mom's favorite flower and the only perfume she owned was rose perfume, she couldn't handle any other kind. I was like why would my mom visit you!? But her grandkids lived there, so that could explain it. Since my dad spent alot of time there, I am surprised we haven't seen him! But that is my experience. Also, at the cemetary we were standing on a large masolium, taking pictures of the beautiful sculpture there, and we began to smell the oder of a dead person, like they smell at the funeral. Maybe a recent addition?

WOW Good story Snappy, and I truly believe that is a sign they are with us. Thats pretty amazing that more than one of you smelt the "death" odor because it isnt something we smell often..JN thumbsup.gif
