For those that may have followed the 22-year old battle between police psychic Noreen Renier and skeptic John Merrell, here is an update. Following a Washington U.S. District court ordering a $39,558 judgment in April 2007 against Renier for breaching a 1992 Florida state settlement agreement with Merrell, Renier petitioned for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy in her home state of Virginia to avoid paying her debts. On October 12, 2007 the first hearing in the bankruptcy court was held and Merrell has asked the Bankruptcy Trustee to hold Renier responsible for her debts, or as part of her debts consider other options. One option he proposes includes the transfer of Renier's publication and movie rights for her book titled 'A Mind for Murder' about her life to his ownership. The book was banished by Renier's publisher soon after Merrell filed his lawsuit in December 2005, later winning in December 2006. Renier remains the only police psychic to have lectured at the FBI and also been sanctioned for use by multiple state and local law enforcement agencies by former FBI Special Agent Robert Ressler. She has also been shown to have exaggerated before a jury and millions of TV viewers with her claims surrounding a crashed aircraft and survivors.
