Windhoek, Namibia - Sixty-eight villagers in northern Namibia were hospitalized last week after eating a dog that had been killed by disease.

The dog's owner had killed it after it contracted an unknown skin disease and ordered it to be burned. Instead, the inhabitants of Oikokola village insisted on eating the meat, which was also shared with people from the nearby Onepandaulo village.

The director of health for northern Namibia, said the villagers were treated at two of the area's major hospitals and that most had recovered. He warned against eating dog meat or the carcass of any sick animal.

Dog meat is considered a delicacy among tribes in northern Namibia.

This is why if a neighbor offers you some dog meat, you should always politely decline. original.gif

Forget that it's a dog for a minute, eating meat from any animal that had been sick and died as a result is just asking for trouble.

Still, I guess they thought they knew best, insisting even after being told not to and all that......

ONE dog.

SIXTY EIGHT people ?

Wow - it must have been a pretty virulent virus/bacteria to have made them sick on such a small portion.

Unless it was a HUGE dog ?
Perhaps it was an Elephant disguised as a dog ?

Did anyone think to ask the villagers how many legs the 'dog' had ?

Ewwww...the dog probably had the mange and was rabid....Surprising they all recovered...About 4 months ago there was an article in our local paper that people shouldn't eat squirrels, supposiingly they were diseased...Yesterday, the paper said all was well with including them in your diet and even gave a recipe on how to cook them...Ughhhhhh...Made me sick.....

I do agree with Lotus Flower quote about this. Even though the dog's owner have warned the people not to eat this dog only burn it because disease. Although 68 people some how didn't carry the mans words or wishes about this manner. They didn't think about the consequences eating sick animal may cause more trouble its worth.
