God. Religion is just mans feeble attempt to make himself holy.

"The more I study religion the more I am convinced man has never worshipped anything but himself" -Anon.
I think that quote sums it up quite well.
As for God,noone knows what it is or isn't so its probably best just to attempt to be benevolent (rather than malevolent).

Religions are split into various factions. All probably in their own way, distribute the same message, unfortunately people decipher what they wish, pick and choose as they see fit.

God however, IMO covers everything.

I have no religion, never have, but I do believe in God.

To me, there is no contest.

I dont think you should have to choose, what if religion is just another form of god

Up until a few days ago, I believed that God was religion and vice versa.....I wasn't aware that a lot of people felt disillusioned with religion and devoted only to God......I myself always felt that religion was too much 'work' and maybe subconsciously used that as an excuse to not allow God into my life....

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that it's okay to not actively participate in a religion, in order to connect with God.... So, I choose God.... thumbsup.gif

Religion sets boundries on the world, God is about the expansion of mankind.

It depends. What is God to you? Is god some omnipotent being? Is God nature? Is God the mirror image of your own self? Your private thoughts? The conscience that guides your through your everyday life?
What is religion? Is religion your way of life? Focusing yourself on what you feel is good and right? A conveinent (or inconveint) way to worship your God? Life itself?

Can God exist without religion and can religion exist without God?

I think we all have different answers to those questions.

As for me, I have no "God" but my own self. Not that I believe myself to be higher or God like. But only I direct my actions. Me. I do good for me. I don't necessarily believe that there is some invisible hand waiting to punish or reward me in the end. I think we reap what we sow in this world. That combined with luck (or lack of) is what we get in this lifetime. So, the punishments or rewards in this life that I do have control of are because of the consequences of my actions. I am careful to make sure that I have a happy life to the best of my abilities. Does that make my life in general my religion? I do good for the good of me.

What about when things all go wrong despite my best efforts! Can I still blame it on the devil then tongue.gif

If the only choice is between the two I'm going to have to go with religion.

The existence of a religion's gods or mythologies is meaningless compared to the religions teachings. In Christianity for example they teach things like charity, honesty, good will towards others, etc...which is more important then believing or not believing in God.

considering my religion your question makes no sense. there are two possibilities though, only2 4everyone
in my case there is God in the center of religion. that is what religion is to me so no way to choose between.
yet most of people put themselves/their desires/thoughts/idealogies in the center of religion.
so they have their personal religions and they play God with or without knowing which causes problems.

Religions are human institutions. Meaning they are subject to human idiocy. Coming from a Catholic family, I feel I can say with confidence that there are some pretty screwy things about that particular institution. That being said, there are many wonderful things about it, otherwise I would no longer feel associated with it at all.

Religious texts were handed down for thousands of years, with recopyings and retellings and mistakes and misinterpretations. They were written by people, who are fallible.

Religions are humanity's attempts to get closer to God, and understand Him/It/whatever. No one has all the answers. I personally believe many things, some taken from the Catholic church I was raised in, some from other Christian denominations, some from entirely different places, some from my own reason, some from my own experiences, etc. To me, religion is a useful tool to help one in their own relationship with God and attempts to find the truth for themselves, but they are not the ultimate authority and most certainly have problems.

The Baha'i faith has some interesting things to say on this subject... look it up, its fascinating.

Religions are more important because religions are doing the brainwashing and indoctrinating. In any trial, the Gods apparently do not exist. The Gods themselves make no more difference in the world than Peter Pan or Tinkerbell. The religions cause a world of difference.

Hai.

God or religion? I'll go with god/gods, because at least god doesn't come knocking on my door with pamphlets. If god did....I'd get my camcorder.

God.
Belle.
For many believers I am sure 'god' is the correct answer. As I suspect they really know all the little rituals and practices that make up a religion must really pale into insignifcance to a 'real' god.

As I am not a believer religion affects my life more. So religion.
