Full Version: Port Arthur: A discriminating ghost

Mr Walker
I have a cousin who has always been a good looking woman. As most of my relatives are. ( Good looking, not necessarily women. It must be a family trait.) In her teens, she was in the Miss South Australia quest.

Anyway, a few years back she was working as a tour guide in the old convict ruins in Pt. Arthur. (Tasmania) There are stories of many ghosts in this location, but she had never run across any. One day she was walking through the old convict orchard area, when she sensed a presence. This quickly developed into the sensation of someone running their hands over her body. It was broad daylight, and there was obviously no one there, but the sensation was unmistakeable. She ran out of the orchard and the feelings ceased.

Understandably quite upset, she went to see her supervisor, and desribed exactly what happened. He gave her a wry smile and said, "I thought this might happen. You just encountered "Old Frank." Don't worry . He's harmless."

He went on to explain that "old Frank" was the ghost of a convict who had been working in the orchard area and had died at an old age. A number of women had experienced the same sensations in this locale, and some had described them to him.

My cousin got quite upset. "Well why didn't you warn me, or say something about him?" she asked.

"Ahh, you see," replied the supervisor, "it is a bit embarrassing. Old Frank is a discriminating ghost, with high standards" All the women he has "molested" have been beautiful. How would you have felt if I had warned you, and then Frank had never bothered you? As it turns out, you obviously met his standards."

By now bemused, partly mollified, and beginning to see the funny side of the whole experience, my cousin could appreciate his point of view. Even so, she chose to walk around the orchard area, rather than through it, for the rest of her time at Pt Arthur.

This is odd to say the very least. One thing that should be taken into consideration is I have heard about people with some sort of psychokinetic ability that can "touch" people without physically doing so. I've seen this a lot and I've heard a lot about it also. It falls into that whole mind over matter thing with certain people able to 100% block off pain or "levitate." Now I don't know how to explain any of this but...it just crossed my mind since things may not always be as they seem. My advice is to be careful because you never know...and to be careful of the supervisor imo.

On a side note I do have a logical explanation for people "levitating" in front of someone that I just thought about so I figure I'll share that idea! Everyone has seen hypnotist and knows of Hypnosis and knows it is true. I thought about it when one of my professors (Dr.) was telling me one of his crazy stories which he loves to tell so much. A few years ago in his religion's in the world class he had a student who was a Buddhist Monk. And she told him that she was taking a path where she was so in control of her mind that she was now able to levitate. So she asked him if he would like to see it and of course he said yes. He told me I didn't have to believe this story because it is so wild but swears to me that it is true and I believe him. She went into his office and they talked for about 10 minutes and then she levitated and was literally talking to him while so was up in the air. He swears to this story.

So I thought wow, this is pretty amazing but if this young lady was able to do this; why don't we see these monks who claim to be able to do this on T.V. all the time? I would think there would be some sneaky people with camera's all over. Then it hit me, that if this individual had her mind under such control and was that "at one" with everything...what stops that person from maybe manipulating others? Now does she do this on purpose? No, I don't think so but what got me was she was talking to him for about 10 minutes before she levitated. Because of this it leads me to believe it was through some form of hypnosis. When someone is under hypnosis they see and hear everything that they are "told" to see. This makes absolute 100% perfect sense to me and I just recently thought of that so I figured I'd share the story and thoughts since this kind of lead me to it. ;P

I live a short drive from Port Arthur. Haven't gone on the ghost walk at night before though.

Guess I'm a bit chicken but I'll probably give it a go one day. I've heard some pretty horrific stories about experiences though (not just the massacre/history of the place either). If any place is haunted, that place is.
Mr Walker
Wasn't expecting this to generate so much interest this quickly. My cousin did not have any photos of ghosts, although I have read articles in a number of magazines which included some. Thanks soursherbert for the link (which does include some photos i notice) This probably would be in the running for the most haunted site in Australia.

In 1996 Martin Bryant went on a shooting spree there and murdered 35 innocent people including children. He also injured 37 others.

Wiki article

Although this place was haunted long before then.

I think people had reported the area haunted since back in the colonial times around 200 years before this occurred. And was definitely an attraction to ghost hunters before the 1996 shooting.

The place was originally a penal settlement. They treated the prisoners there extremely harshly. Basically it has a long history of cruelty and torture. Which might be one reason it's so haunted now?
