I have recently realised that there are a lot of phobias out there. Which one do you think is the weirdest phobia or which kind do you have? I personally think the stupidest phobia is homophobia. Sorry if I have offended anyone but, I just don't understand how someone can be homophobic. Gays are people too.

The one I think is the weirdest is the one which is most common - the phobia of other people...

I have a phobia which is very politically incorrect, and it has caused me some embarrassing situations, but I can't help being afraid of what I'm afraid of, it stems from a childhood incident and has just got worse over the years.

I think if someone has a phobia and another person doesn't, it seems like it's always going to be a weird phobia.

I know lots of people afraid of spiders whereas I'm not afraid of them, and to me their phobia, although I acknowledge it and try not to frighten them more as I'm nice like that(!), seems very weird as I think spiders are quite cool little critters.

Weirdest phobia I have ever heard of is a fear of wooden lollipop sticks... go figure.

I have a spider phobia. It can be quite violent at times.

I also have a fear of water, not like water itself, but drowning in it. Aquaphobia. I've been like that since a certain incident when I was a kid.

Oh, by the way, I don't want to turn your thread into a dicsussion about homophobia in general, but a quick question for you if you don't mind:

do you think homophobia is a true phobia (as in, a sufferer will not go near their fear, like people who are phobic of spiders), or would you say homophobia isn't a fear per se, more of a dislike/lack of understanding and acceptance.

Homophobia should literally be an uncontrollable fear of homosexuals and of homosexuality, but the term is generally used for a negative and contemptuous attitude to same-sex sexual relationships and to those who participate in them.

I know people whom say they are homophobic as they do not like the 'concept' of gay, but they're not actually scared of homosexuals.

I think a lot of phobias stem from childhood.

I'm sorry you're scared of spiders, I have a friend who is absolutely petrified of them so much so it affects her every day life and her ability to do certain things, so I'm with you all the way on the spiders.

I think homophobia has taken on a lot of meanings. As I understand, the original meaning was simply that you were afraid of homosexuals and the concept of homosexuals but, I think it's now most often used to describe people who dislike homosexuals.

Phobia's???? That just fear-based thinking based on a particular individual. I wouldn't consider any of them really weird cuz that falls too much into the "judging" category. I do empathize with some BUT I do not think it's okay for, let's say, a homophobic to do mean things to a homosexual based on THEIR own fears... that's just cowardly and trying to self-empower; still not changing the existing phobia. Am I making sense?
Ghø§t
Fear of falling.. and fear of death. Wonder what they are called. ohmy.gif

Pandora2173
Geckos!! Growing up I never saw one, ever. But, in the last 5 years they have slowly started to invade my city and they're HORRID!! They are a pinkish flesh color and you can see right through them and their little pulsing organs. Gaaaaaaaaaaah, they are SOOOO disgusting. I can't handle them. Period. Even talking about them or typing this right now, I get goose pimples, a chill runs up my spine and I start squirming around. If one gets near me I will revert to the age of 6 and start crying. For real.

Also, caterpillars, little green tree frogs and maggots. DISGUSTING. Same reaction as above.

On the other hand I love spiders and snakes. Go figure.
RockChickUK
I think the word phobia is used too readily to describe a dislike to something or whatever.

Like my friend said she had a phobia of escalators in the shopping centre/mall...not a problem, we'd take the stairs or lift. But then someone else I knew through a different friend said the same thing, seeing as we had never had a problem with my friend and her phobia we didn't think much of it...but this girl literally woudn't go to certain places JUST IN CASE there was an escalator there.

A phobia is an unrational fear of something, and will affect your life quite dramatically. So, for me, Homophobia is just a fancy name for people who can't or don't want to understand or relate to anyone who is gay. I don't like cheese but it doesn't mean I can say I have a phobia for cheese.

I think I am developing a phobia of housework though grin2.gif

I have a fear of broken light bulbs. I know it is freaky, but I am scared of them. I do not even walk down the aisle at the store where they are.
I have a fear of any and all poisons. This can even include cleaning agents being mixed and becoming a toxic inhalant. I can only clean with one cleaner because I am scared of a toxic cloud being in my house.
I have a fear of backing up my SUV. I MUST pull in straight and with nothing in front of me everywhere I go. I only park in places that I can pull straight out of.

Pelican_Eel
This topic is quite popular on UM.
As someone mentioned - fear of vomiting, totally fits to me... When I'm sick, I can torture myself for hours because of that fear.
Water, I can't swim and don't like to talk about it.
Social phobia - well, it's not that bad... but sometimes it gets me...very annoying, unpleasant thing...

EDIT: yes, and phonecalls. I thought it's related to social phobia
As for which is the strangest, I vote for fear of chocolate...

Pelican_Eel
strange when you think, that phobias is in hobbies and interests section, haha, I find it true
etanner
Phobias are definitely a hobby. My sister has a fear of polka dots. That's a weird one.
~Cheese~
Tons!!
Oblique Spiral
Somniphobia- the fear of sleep. I don't understand how people can't love sleeping. I know I do tongue.gif

I don't think I suffer from any phobias. That said, I do occasionally have panic attacks for random reasons, they're not as bad as they could be though. Normally I just hyperventilate and get whatevers on my mind sorted. Whether it be getting some work done or finding something that I need.

I thought fear of sleeping was hypnophobia. But hey, I don't know what phobia did I get, but I used to (and maybe still) have a fear of darkness, but now I can't sleep unless they turned off the light.

Its similar. Hynophobia is the fear of sleeping and/or being hypnotised I believe.
Somniphobia is just the fear of sleeping.

As for sleeping in the dark, yeah I used to hate it. I'm better now and can sleep in the dark however I prefer to fall asleep with my tv on, so when I snuggle into bed and turn all my lights I put my tv on sleep so it goes off after a while.

I just love being all snuggly in bed and not having to worry about other things like uni work etc.

I'm so with you there. I can't even handle someone touching my feet. I don't get sick, but I would probably hit someone if they put their feet on me, and I'm not a violent person. innocent.gif

I also don't like hair, but it's usually a pretty easy one to hide. The worst is wet hair, so it's pretty nasty in the bathroom. Especially when people come to stay at your house and you start to wonder if bigfoot just visited your shower, big furry clumps in the drain... Nasty. That does make me gag when I have to clean it up and it's really bad, I couldn't shower in that mess. crying.gif

My only other fear is of injections. They can take my blood and it doesn't bother me a bit. Once they put something in me that doesn't belong there I get woozy and start feeling faint.

The weirdest one I've ever seen was a woman I used to work with that was mortally afraid of microwave ovens. I can understand that old ones with bad seals can be dangerous, but this lady was terrified of any microwave. The instant one turned on she would dart out of the room and run at least "30 feet away" (her words).
Malakthrin
I have a fear of heights, yet I love flying.
I have a fear of drowning, yet I love swimming.
I have a fear of spiders, yet I think they look neat.

I think the wierdest one I have seen is a fear of knees, Genuphobia. Or even Geliophobia, fear of laughter.

Im afraid of crickets... I love spiders and I even have a pet
scorpion that I hold, but im terrified to death of crickets.

There is a fear of peanutbutter sticking to the roof of your mouth.
I think phobias is somthing your brought up with well in some cases anyway.like with homphobiac that persons parents proably told them bad things about gays and lesbians so they were brought up with it you know?

I dont think I have a phoibia.I knew someone who has panic attacks when it comes to needles so I love sticking pins in my arms to scare her out its hillarious.Ive also wonderd why people are affraid of bees? like for example when were out on the oval at school some one wil go "ah a bee" and it will be followed by a "AH! where?!" and so I have to pick it up and put it somewhere safe becuase some tryhard kid will kill it.Same thing with spiders i think theyre cute.
MyYoungBlood
I also recall the fear of tissue paper.
ravergirl
a phobia is an irrational fear of something. not just a fear of something.

i have a phobia of clowns. i just almost threw up typing the word and i am not reading this for typo's because then i will have to read the word. I don't go to places that they are. even mcdonalds. I went to a haunted house and there was one that came out and wouldn't go away...i kept gagging it was awful I was pretty sure I was going to die.
