Full Version: Has heroes jumped the shark?

I have bene watching all the exciting direct from the US episodes of heroes, House and other bits and pieces and I do believe we are hitting a run of shows jumping the shark

first the meaning of jumping the shark

The term Jumping the shark alludes to a scene in the TV series Happy Days when the popular character Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli, on water skis, literally jumps over a shark. The scene was so preposterous that many believed it to be an ill-advised attempt at reviving the declining ratings of the flagging show.

Since then, the phrase has become a colloquialism used by U.S. TV critics and fans to denote the point at which the characters or plot of a TV series veer into a ridiculous, out-of-the-ordinary storyline. Typically, such a show is deemed to have passed its peak. Once a show has "jumped the shark," fans sense a noticeable decline in quality or feel the show has undergone too many changes to retain its original charm.

Jump-the-shark moments may be scenes like the one described above that finally convince viewers that the show has fundamentally and permanently strayed from its original premise. In those cases, they are viewed as a desperate and futile attempt to keep a series fresh in the face of a decline in ratings. In other cases, the departure or replacement of a main cast member or character or a significant change in setting changes a critical dynamic of the show.

Okay

Any way as I said I have been seeing all this episodes

Okay Heroes has jumped for me First both pertrelli brothers are alive second Sylar is alive (boo but yay cause he is hot) but the clincher was when matty the mind reader pointed out his father in that pretty picture. Way to many connections way to many lost daddies and miracle survivors. Stupid. Also its predictable ill put spoilage on just in case im right but....the killer is so hiros hero dude from the past. The guy is immortal. Claire is immortal. The invisible dude will meet up with peter again in ireland. May help him to escape. Sylar will help the good guys (oh wait he is already doing that). Peter may turn evil. and Matty will have to choose between his dad and that little girl in some heart renching episode.

Anyway House jumped when everyone quit and he went looking for a new team. Stupid. Lost its appeal when that happened. In fact as I type this House is on and im not watching it cause I gave up on it and believe me I used to drop what i was doing to watch it.

Greys anatomy jumped with the whole back from the dead thing
californication jumped at the title sequence

Anyhoo have any of your favourite shows jumped the shark? When and how? Has heroes lost its edge and is going the way of Lost?

I'm still holding out for Heroes. I thought that spoiler theory as well...especially after I lightened the picture of the killer from nbc.com.

One thing I am sick of though is all this bullcrap teenage love that has no place in a show like this.

DAMN RIGHT get the Emo love dove stupid stuff off the show. Im sick of that just watch the OC or something for that.

How did you get the pic do you have a copy to post According to an entry in Kristin Dos Santos' E! Online blog, Kensei will also appear in the present, having lived through the 400 years in-between the two time periods link continues to prove my theory on predicdiablity

heores the first season was great. the second season is just the first season, but worse. - tree from jump the shark

I was reading it on a fan forum; forget which one exactly lol. There is also a spoiler alert thing I've read that says there is going to be a hero that is at least 1000 years old showing up in this season.

Here is the picture from nbc.com. Don't click if you don't want a spoiler folks thumbsup.gif.

Wait what House is still good, and Houses old team is back just in different positions at the hospital and they are still relevant in the show if you have been watching, and the ending to last nights episodes was hilarious. That Mimic dude was cool too!

But yeah Heroes is crap now they are recycling everything of the first season. We shouldn't assume that people that can regenerate are immortal, rapid regeneration should actually shorten ones life span I would assume or at least take up a lot of energy (but we never see Claire or Kensie eat a lot) and cutting off the head should do the trick too.

Don't know what episode your on but Peter already left Ireland invisible guy was not there

Those "streamed direct" advertisements from Ten are a joke. We get our episodes at least 2 weeks after the US does.

Anyway, as most Heroes fans have speculated, the writers and producers are leading up to something big...hence all the boredom.

Yeah and thats what they thought about "Lost" oh wait nothing big happened.

"the big thing" on heroes is that everyone is connected and there will be more gasp moments as we find out that everyone is evryone elses dad. or something

Im over the whole leading us on thing trying to keep us watching. Its boring I want answers and fast

Incorrect, we get Californication about a week after the US and we get House and Life within 24 hours of the US. On Seven we have to wait about 9 days for Heroes.

thats nice but still doesnt stop the down loaders

and what happen in winter when these shows would usually be on?

anyhoo saw an episode of heroes last night and a gain we have a daddy and again we jump or get a little closer to jumping
Shush_rules
i don't see a problem with the Pertrelli brothers surviving...i mean it was obvious Peter would seeing as he can regenerate...and it was only logical for his brother to let go and fly away before he exploded?

But yeah...they didn't really come up with any original powers in this season...yet anyway

Well, until we see Mohinder water-skii-ing and jumping over a shark for no real reason. We're still far away from Heroes jumping the shark.

Here are my thoughts on Heroes Season 2 I posted on AICN (Ain't It Cool News):

I 110% agree with chromedome; folks who are acting as apologists for the show are hurting it. It's like going to a restaurant every week, and getting a really good piece of pie. Over the course of two years, the pie goes from being great and having an awesome pumpkin filling, to being filled with dog sh**. Me? I don't like eating sh**, and the people who keep saying Heroes is still good are remembering that the pie USED to taste good. Well guess what? You're eating sh**. I don't like sh**, so I'm going to get the waitress to bring me the cook so I can say, "Why the **** did you put sh** in my pie, a******?" Fans have to speak up to the writers/creators of the show, or things won't change. Looking back on this season (which thus far has been short) there has been NOTHING interesting or groundbreaking plot-wise. I swear the writers seem to just not care. Maybe it's time to fire the cook.

I like the Kensai plot, but you have to remember, everything happening now is leading up to the main plot - the good heroes Vs the bad heroes.

Though, most things that are happening are far to OC atm, if it doesn't change by season 3. I'll start criticizing it.

Heroes is boring at the moment they have wasted precious time trying to set us up for something big and people are loosing intrest. alot of my friends have been saying they are very dissapointed with this season thats its lost something. Its lost the plot and its mummies everyones dad is connected in something.its stupid why cant the ulmitate bad guy be a bad gal

hmrrmmr..I think I vill post MY opinion...hrmmr...

First of all, dont be hating on house...sure there havn't been any real good episodes...and the finding a new team stuff is taking WAY to long (Just get the brown guy, hot girl, and the blonde cut throat lady or old guy whos not really a doctor).....but once things pick up im sure the writers will get some good stuff out..its just that the current of arc of him dealing with finding a new team is taking up alot time...I want some more stuff with that police guy from last season...or something along the lines of House getting shot again...

Heroes...hmm...i agree...its sh** now...I'm sick of wasting an hour every monday to see NO plot development...just more forced "GASP" sequences where we find ANOTHER connection...or 10 minutes emo love/micha and his new family not getting anything dun.....To much time wasted on Hiro in the past...every five minutes its him talking about the old stories/spacetime qutinome (sp?)....I liked Hiro better last season..and wheres the sh** with Ando and Hiro's sister?....I'm also pissed that we havn't learned ANYTHING NEW about the old guard (Lindermen, Mr/Mrs. P, Hiro's Dad)....the only thing thats even remoteley interesting is Mohinder and HRG/Hatian trying to bring down Bob and the company...

Oh and even though lost isn't on yet...i gotta say...Jack sucks and Kate, even though shes HOT...has been increasingly annoying eversince eppisdoe 1...so Im not holding my breath that shes going to change much for next season...

I agree. All this boringness is leading to something tongue.gif. I think in season one they went fast to the main plot to keep the viewers interested. Now that we know "all" of it, they're leading to the big disaster.

I've always downloaded eps after they've screened in America, and I did that weekly with Heroes for Season 1, though I've found after watching the first couple of eps of Season 2 that I don't particularly have a desire to watch it. I think it's primarily because of that Claire/West thing, which I really couldn't care less about. I know Claire is the popular hero so there's a lot of focus on her for the sake of the public, but I find I don't really care that much. My fav hero is Nathan, and I like Nikki as well. I think I'll just wait until Season 2 is over and then download the lot and watch it all at once.

I dunno if I'd say Heroes has jumped the shark (yet), but I get the feeling that they're keeping the popular characters alive and kicking because they don't wanna lose their fanbase, and getting rid of the less important ones (DL anyone?). I had a fear that my obsession (Supernatural) would jump the shark after the introduction of the "new sexy, butt-kicking, bad-ass" female cast members (as forced by the CW network), but I relaxed once I found that I enjoy the character Ruby, and am curious about her intentions. I'm still yet to see the point of the other female, Bela, even after reading spoilers I fail to see what she's meant to bring to the show other than more male viewers. Unfortunately it's all about attracting viewers, so these shows will do whatever it takes. I mean, Smallville has even gone so far as to bring in Supergirl, though in all fairness that did jump the shark many seasons ago - I know this despite the fact I've never watched it! I see enough on the ads.

I think that the whole Hiro falling in love with that one chick, is generic and cheesy as hell.

Yeah, the whole and Claire/West thing is stupid. She isnt part of the plot, she's just filler.

I think everything is fine, concerning plot, but I'd think they're dragging things too long like a damn Dragon Ball Z episode. It takes like 3 episodes for Peter to open that damn box. "Omg, I think I'm gonn a open teh box now! But first I wanna kiss you." (Kisses the chick) "On second thought, I dont wanna open it anymore." Then there's that cameo of some chick. Too bad she kills that one guy, I thought he was a bamf.

I thought it was clever how Mohinder is basically screwed; he's got Nikki watching his back and making sure he's doing his work. Nikki is awesome, but whats her power anyways? Superstrong and split-personality? Whats her stand on the whole plot, is she part of the company?

I also like Mr. Bennet's situation; knowing the future can be a gift and curse. I think it was kinda reflects off of the story of Oedipus Rex.

Sylar is so sick, would like him to see him find some catalyst for his powers. But I wonder, did he know that he was going to get picked up by Maya and her brother? Or did was really gonna die in the desert, and they happen to find him? Haha I thought it was funny that he was just lying there on the road.
Mad Manfred
All the characters are just annoying now. Everyone's either whining or moping.

Sick of the Hiro and 'the most beautiful woman in Japan who just happens to be only mildly attractive' story.

Sick of the Nikki/Jessica split-personality story. IT WAS OLD AND BORING BY THE END OF SEASON 1.

Sick of Claire's whinging and Noah's borderline creepy obsession with her.

Sick of the new Peter. Hate to say it...but I miss the old emo philanthropist. Sure he whined a lot more but I prefer him whining than him confused. It's just annoying.

and I'm sick of the sexual tension between Mohinder and Matt...just get it over with already. You can't focus on getting Molly help when you're busy eye-ball ****ing each other.

And I don't like Veronica Mars. I haven't been this put out since I was watching Sin City and Rory from the Gilmore Girls came on-scene.

Hm, I just found out Kensai and Claire don't have the ability of "healing".

Infact, their super-power is "invincibility". So Kensai living upto the present isn't because of rapid healing, he's just... Invincible so long as nothing gets stuck in his head.

This also means Peter is invincible too.

This episode was definitely the best so far. Don't see any sharks yet thumbsup.gif. Buttttt. Alas. Next episode is "four months ago" I hate that. But supposedly, it's answering all the questions we've been asking blah blah blah. It better be worth it *shakes fist*. Matt's performance was unbelievable. I don't think I ever seen such passion in this series yet. Peter pffft. He got rid of his emo hair but he's still a whiney baby.

Ooooh! And. Finally, we've been given the answer why saving the Cheerleader means saving the world. For a long while I thought it was a horrible plot hole, but thank goodness it was answered in last nights episode.
Celumnaz
nah it's "Spontanious Rapid Cellular Regeneration" or something along those lines. They've said it a bunch in the show, 1st season even. And like last season when Claire got "blown up" and burned, she really burned. On the autopsy table last season, the moritian cut her open. Her bones break etc...

Things I don't care for are West, he's been creepy to me from the start, and the moral greyness of Noah. Think Ali Larter has a niche with her acting and her part in this seems like over-acting.

For me it's still a great show, but has become a bit predictable. Knew who the killer was when he took out Mr. Sulu. Only thing really that catches me by supprise is when they ignore continuity problems for their plot. But once the direction is hinted, can pretty much predict what's next.

Next show should wrap up a bunch of loose ends on the old guard, but I expect them to just raise new questions with it. Wanna see more of Mohinder's girlfriend in India.

Zack Quinto is too big for the show. Think his presence outshines everyone. If you've been keeping up with the "off air" easter eggs and whatnot, Micah and Hana are major players. Spills into the show when they make offhand comments... like Linderman's difficulty with his "Election Bomb" last season.

Yeah, I was wrong.

It's Kensai who's powers are invincibility, Claires is spontainious regeneration.

Now, Peters got both.

I assume you mean Kevin Smith?
Interesting.
Although I don't think he can be as good a director, unless he also writes the episode. Writing has always been his strength.

And I don't know about "jumping the shark". I would call it more "hitting its stride". The second season started off kind of slow, i.e. "Ugh Sylar's back. They really are basing this on comics books, because the bad guys won't freaking stay dead!" But I have found the last few episodes stronger than most in the series. Especially the way they use Sylar's character. I hope they keep him just the way he is, instead of a walking compendium of powers.
The balance of the twins is a cool idea. And so is the muscle memory girl -- although I am sure I am not the only one that yelled "Enter the Dragon!" when her power was revealed. So thumbsup.gif for the new characters, even emo boy there. He's a necessary evil. Just because a girl can fall 5 stories and walk away, she still needs some stupid teenage romance to make her a believable character.
And for the existing characters: is it just me or is Parkman slowly stealing the entire series? And I like the changes, subtle and otherwise, in Noah and Nathan. Hiro is always cool. Peter I am not so high on, but he is no fun without balance. Maybe he should develop a God complex to go with his powers?
Everyone else, eh, they are there. Not high on them, not down on them.
Except for Ali Larter's character. Someone please, please throw her under a train, bus, anything. Oh wow look another butt-kicking chick! sleepy.gif

I kinda have to admit, I sorta liked this past episode. Things have finally started to pick up, though I'm not a fan of the virus. I don't know what it is, I guess this season has seemed to parallel last season a little too much, and many of the characters have storylines that haven't budged all season. I'm still holding out that something cool and unexpected might happen - the ensei=Adam thing was soooo obvious.

Niki is a good character. I doubt she'd be so bothered about her split personality if she hadn't set up her husband or had a kid. Which are the reasons she's wanting to either rid of them, or control them.

I think I figured out the plot of season 2 though. Sylar kills Alejandro, which means when Maya creates her virus-power, it cannot be neutralised by Alejandro. Which is why there was no cure to be found in the last Alt.Future - seeing as it is not a biological virus, but a super-created-virus. Maya kills 93% of the world due to Sylar wanting more power.

It's still too early for me to decide. The thing that ruined Season 3 for me would be the opening episode, I was expecting something as great as In My Time of Dying season 2 opener, but it was kind of dull in comparison. However, I love spoilers and episodes 7, 8, 10 and 11 sound great, and if my suspicions about Ruby are true then I think this season will be better than season 2. My tiff with Bela comes mainly from the fact that she's this millionaire, while hunters run around wracking up credit card scams, hustling and getting thrown into jail. It kind of makes them seem a bit... stupid, dare I say sleep.gif There's also the fact that it was the networks decision to put Bela in, not Kripke's, and I hate when the big bosses step in and try to alter a show to their advantage. I guess you could say I was a bit prejudice towards her. I'll keep watching and hoping her character has a point and contributes to the shows overall storyline.

I have bene watching all the exciting direct from the US episodes of heroes, House and other bits and pieces and I do believe we are hitting a run of shows jumping the shark

first the meaning of jumping the shark

What has happened with Lost? It is not on the schedule anymore. I would say Lost jumped the shark in the last season. Maybe the writers are trying to figure out how to bring back the eerie sense of coincidence and weirdness of the first season.

I don't agree that Heroes or House have jumped the Shark. Sure the two seasons of Heroes make no sense taken together. Unless we are expected to believe they prevented one disaster but now have a much worse disaster to prevent (the virus). And I think firing the old guard and bringing a new cast of candidates has given new life to House. It is the opposite of jumping the shark, whatever that would be. The show was getting a little stale. And I like the new season of Heroes just as well as the first one. I am glad that Sylar has lost all his powers. I am glad they brought back Peter Petrelli. The first season had a habit of killing off the good characters. That was also true of Lost, seasons 1 and 2.

I really like Sylar's story of regaining his ability. I hope Peter turns evil, because bad guys rule!

Yeah, the whole and Claire/West thing is stupid. She isnt part of the plot, she's just filler.

Well apparently she i sto save the world ten bucks says she is the ansewr to this "virus" problem Predictable

All the characters are just annoying now. Everyone's either whining or moping.

and I'm sick of the sexual tension between Mohinder and Matt...just get it over with already. You can't focus on getting Molly help when you're busy eye-ball ****ing each other.

DAMN RIGHT Mohinder and sylar would be hotter. But have you read some of the fan fic with these two Dang its hot.

yeah evil peter ten bucks says it happens

ten bucks says.....

1) Peter and nathan will have a falling out then a heart to heart (and i hope one of them dies this season)

2) Mohinder is like a transformer "more then meets the eye" ie he may have an ability that is yet to be seen

3) Nikki/whatsherface will recover and possibly spilt into two individuals like i mean there will be two seperate bodies and personalities

4) More out of work "used to be cute" teen actors will join the cast. Such as the chick of Gilmore girls. Or that chick from Joan of arcadia and maybe that little squirt from 7th heaven will join with the ability of being really really annoying.

5) Claire will fire the gun or peter or her boyfriend or it will be self inflicted because i got the sense Claires dad knows he has to die.

6) Finally mohinder and matt will break the tension

Oh and just a little trivia Christopher Eccleston (the invisable dude {guy from dr WHo}) was supposed to play sylar now the show wouldnt have sucked so much if that happened. To bad the producers dont have hiros power

All the characters that were killed off were played by people who drink to much.

Thought of this thread tonight, while watching Episode 8 of Season 2. I can see how one would think the show might be losing something, judging by this terrible piece of flashback. Brilliant writing idea, having an episode as a flashback that doesn't reveal a single thing viewers haven't deduced for themselves! Wow!
Note of caution for those out there like me: there is a lot of Ali Larter's poorly written, Lifetime Network pastiche, weak-willed bore of a character in this episode. Keep vomit bags and remote handy.

And now to comment on other's posts instead of just ranting!

Ooooh. I could make some money off you! LOL. Of course, I am probably wrong, since I expect more of the visual media than it usually produces -- btw, if y'all go to rent DVDs in the near future, stay away from a 'horror' movie called 'The Messengers'; that thing turned to crap fast in the last 20 minutes -- and I am still holding my breath, waiting for Heroes to fulfill my low expectations of television.
That said, and in a spirit of fun, here is what I would like to see happen, sticking vaguely to jesspy's list.

First of, Peter isn't going evil. He might be the puppet, but he isn't suddenly going bad -- although a God complex would be fun. And y'all could be right with who you think is pulling the strings, but I would be willing to wager it is some one else as yet unseen.

1) I don't think Peter and Nathan will have a falling out. I'm more inclined to believe that if Peter ends up being a puppet, Nathan is the one that cuts the strings. And I don't think either of them should die. My vote for death is of course, Ali Larter's characters -- horrible and pointless -- just like her storyline -- please.

2) Mohinder already has an ability. His blood is an anti-virus to what killed his sister. Of course, I would like to see a cycle of mutations, both in him and the virus. Basically, I think he is a one-sided version of the Hispanic twins.

3) God no, we don't want Ali Larter splitting. Here's a better idea: how about a suicidal personality developing and taking the whole damn pathetic lot out with it. Please? Writers? Maybe you could have her throw herself into a wood chipper?

4) LOL. I am thinking they should streamline the cast by the end of the season. Cut down on some of the bloat. It actually looked like they were moving towards this, before the swollen beast that was episode 8.

5) I don't think that the picture of Noah dead will come true. I am hoping the writers understand the function of prophecy -- not to reveal the future but warn of a possible outcome -- and don't make this happen. Losing an interesting character -- especially while Ali Larter is still alternating between bursting into tears and displaying various traits of my ex-wives -- would probably make me give up on the show. I would be more inclined to think maybe Noah has some sort of hidden power and if he does get shot, that would be the impetus for revealing it.

6) LOL. I don't think Matt and Mohinder are meant to be seen as gay, even though they do seem seconds away from just going at like wild, homosexual, monkeys at times. I think it is more of a comment on how fluid the definition of 'family' is. I would like to see more of an exploration of Matt's powers. Controlling dreams, very interesting idea, if not a new one.

Overall, I still have hope for the show, and stand by what I said earlier, before tonight's episode this season had been better than the first, but I just know the writers are going to take the easy road and let me down again.

^ Well the writers are on strike so its no damn wonder so many shows are falling apart. Give the dudes more money so we can get more quality programming. Start a donation service or something. Or if the public like an episode we should send a writer a penny in the mail so if the episode is really good he gats a heap of pennys!

Any way im replying to wants in the red if the red thing worked but you will get the gist.

Okay what you said about Noah is a good idea having things "not come true" or alternate posablities. It also leaves it open to the fact that maybe the painters power wasnt up to scratch and in fact none of their powers are. I dont know if that made sense but ill keep going.
With mohinder I know he already has an ability but what i was trying to say is maybe there is something more to it. like the is an expanse on Matts powers where he can do more then just mind read. What i mean is could just touch someone infected and cure them?
I know Matt and Mohinder arent meant to be shown as gay but lik estated earlier the way they eyeball eachother there is something there hence the sig.

Heroes and other shows have not only the strike issuse but an ideas issuse TV is full of cliches (spelling) and bullcrap. its like they have run out of ideas. keeping in familiar characters and killing ones off we are just getting to doesnt help. Like NHN said Cut out the weeds keep the stronger parts and give us some damn answers

Also how many times has peter been on screen without a shirt on?

Oh and sadly I watched the messengers it turned to crap in the first 20 mins. I spent half the time waiting for the CSM guy to step out of the shadows and smoke a ciggy

Its Noah who supose to die? I thought it was Mr. Bennette (Sp?), though I did thought of it as a possiblity. Although, Noah's King Midas powers is kinda kool to have. I liked this episode because it didnt have that much obvious product placements. I thought the full length movie previews during commercials were a good change.

Some things I disliked about the episode:

-The huge time gap of Two Months Ago to Two Weeks ago. What happend right after DL was killed? Did Nikki go back to Jessica and kill the dude?

-Why is Sylar still alive? They never talked about it. All I saw from the last episode of Season 1 was the open manhole. The company took him, but I want some more detail on the story.

-Claire and Dad family, they couldnt have just went back to Texas, conviently found a place in California.

-The Haitian man, why was he back in Haiti? Company couldnt have just let him go.

-Mohinder and Parkman, a little info of what happend after the explosion would be nice.
