Ever since kune kune pig Wilbur was introduced to Lulu, the standardbred horse, they have developed a stable relationship.
The friendship began after one-year-old boar Wilbur, came to the Rubicon Valley Horse Treks and Tourist Centre a year ago.
"Within a couple of days, we noticed they were becoming very friendly. When we fed them, they would just end up in the same paddock," centre owner Chris Lowe said.
"If they are put together at night, the pig will sleep in the stable and the horse will stand over the top of it. If they are in fields next to each other, then they will touch noses through the fence. When we first separated them, the pig would squeal and grunt and make a lot of noise, but he's becoming more used to it now.
"It's strange, because horses and pigs don't normally get on. Most horses don't like pigs, but they are obviously the exceptions. I can't see any reason why their relationship shouldn't continue for a long time."
