That is really freaky. Really nice. And do you know the price difference between the white fillings and the metal ones? It is unreal what the dentists charge! Shame on them, they need to think about our health. I don't understand why these things aren't outlawed.
Ghost It Notes
I'm a registered dental assistant and I don't know why the amalgam (silver colored ) fillings aren't outlawed either. The white colored fillings are called composite. I have a ton of amalgam in my mouth and I wish I didn't, but it's from being a poor child on Medical. The dentist I worked for last went to all composite, saying to the patient it was better for them, but the truth for him was that it costs more to the patient and he got more money. Unfortunately, with many dentists, it comes down to making more money. The poor children and adults on Medical get amalgam only. Medical will not pay for composite. It sucks. I will tell you all something that will OUTRAGE you.....when you get a crown that costs from $600.00 to $1000.00 or more, guess what it costs the lab to make your crown? Are you ready??? From $45 to $55 bucks!!!!!!! No joke. I will say though that the cements and such that the dentists use are hella expensive, but damn! I remember once while assisting the dentist, spilling about one quarter of the powder that is mixed with a special liquid to make a sealant. He rolled his eyes at me like I was the dumbest thing ever and I just cost him so much money. I have a ton of funny or crazy dental stories that I may put on here later including the guy who was too big to Xray. What a job!!

To my way of thinking...the cost of treating people later because of complications from these fillings would outweigh the cost of just getting rid of them right now. Doesn't that make sense?

The cost of replacing all of your amalgam fillings with composite would be stiff. Also, you would lose more tooth structure as the dentist would have to drill out more space to clean out the old filling. It would be fine if you only had one or two teeth involved. But I'm not entirely sure the percentage of mercury would harm you.It is only 1 or 2 percent in the filling. Here is some more info on that;

Mercury, which is poisonous, is used in dental amalgam. Is amalgam filling safe?
Amalgam contains various metals such as silver, copper and tin, as well as mercury. When mercury is combined with these metals, it becomes an inactive stable substance. Only under unusually great pressure or abrasion will the amalgam release a minute amount of mercury vapour. As compared to the daily dosage of mercury being absorbed from the environment, such as food, water and air, the minuscule amount of mercury released from the amalgam fillings is insignificant.

Should people have the amalgam fillings in their mouths removed in order to prevent certain serious illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease?
There is no scientific literature or evidence which shows that the removal of amalgam fillings helps patients recover from their illnesses, nor is there any evidence which suggests such a relationship. Unless there is an allergic reaction, it is not advisable to have amalgam fillings replaced because of the following reasons:

Replacement of filling materials will lead to further loss of tooth structure.

Amalgam is still the most preferred filling material owing to its safety and effectiveness. Tooth-coloured filling material such as composite is not as resistant to stress as amalgam and is not suitable for large cavities. Gold is an effective material, but it is expensive.

Are some people allergic to amalgam?
Allergic reaction to amalgam is very rare. Within 150 years of usage, there were only 100 documented cases. This type of patients should use other filling materials.

I meant for all the new fillings, like stop doing the metal fillings from now on and just go with the composites. As to allergies I am allergic to most metals and have one metal filling since I couldn't afford a composite in that one.

Aw I was unable to view the original link, it was just a little square with a red cross in the middle sad.gif

Do they still do fillings which contain mercury? I remember having a couple as a kid, but eventually they were taken out and different ones put in.

I tell you something about those silver fillings though, it was like getting an electric shock if a piece of foil from a sweet wrapping accidentally touched it! crying.gif
