CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A woman who doesn't want her breast milk to go to waste has taken out a newspaper ad in hopes of selling it.

Martha Heller, 22, took out an ad in The Gazette newspaper offering 100 ounces of her breast milk for $200 or the best offer.

Heller said her freezer is overflowing with breast milk she has pumped since August. Her 4-month-old daughter won't drink from a bottle and the supply is piling up.

Heller now donates to the University of Iowa's Mother's Milk Bank, but the 100 ounces of milk she wants to sell were pumped before she went through the screening process for the bank and cannot be donated.

Linda Klein, a lactation consultant at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, said breast milk can generally be stored in a freezer for up to six months.

Heller said she researched laws regarding the sale of breast milk and couldn't find any in Iowa

Errr... here in the UK, there is a big business in "pick your own strawberries/rasberries/apples/fruits etc"... you go down to the farm, get a basket from the Kiosk, pick your fruits yourself, and then they charge you according to how much you have hand-picked.

The point is... you have to harvest it yourself.

err... would this milk be available on the same basis ?

When i had my daughter the hospital i had her in was asking for new moms to donate their breast milk for babies that had allergies to milk and formula, and who,s own moms wern,t able to produce enough as well as for new borns fostered out or adopted and needed it. So i can see some rich woman who,s just adopted a baby buying it to give that child the best start, but what if your baby needs it and your not able to buy it? I would hope there are still woman willing to donate it to the local hospitals instead of selling it or dumping what their babies don,t need down the drain!

I agree, this really isn't that odd. It says she's donating her extra milk to the Mother's Milk program, which does what you're talking about, swtp. But, again, like the article said, the stuff she's trying to sell was pumped before she went through the screening process, so she can't donate it. Honestly, I'd probably do the same thing. At least she'll get paid for this batch. original.gif
