By injecting embryonic stem (ES) cells from a wood mouse into the early embryo of a house mouse, an international team of scientists has produced normal healthy animals made up of a mixture of cells from each of the two distantly related species. This is the first time that stem cells from one mammalian species have been shown to contribute extensively to development when introduced into the embryo of another, very different species.

Full Article. My friend and I were talking about this yesterday. Though "unethical" to some. The possibility of mixing species is all to great to put down. Think, pigs that grow human organs which can be removed to be used for Organ Transplants in humans and then their carcasses can be used to feed us, efficiently fixing 2 problems at once.
In before, "Think of the monsters that will be spawned!"
Also, if this needs to be moved to The Natural World Forum or Science and Technology go for it.

but they all not to different species.
wood mouse+ house mouse, tiger+lion, donkey+horse, etc..
we should try with extreme differences, like elephant with rhino, shark with alligator.. that will be awesome!

www.messybeast.com although focusing mainly on cats, has some very interesting information on this topic and is a good starting point to look at.

well when they are able to genesplice animal dna into humans I'll be happy, because then I could become a fat fox

That would be canniblism.

1. It would not be canabalism as the cell growth can be controlled in independant organs and tissues, it wouldn't be spread out through the entire organism.
2. It was not "similar species" as along with the wood mouse dna, a small amount of human dna was added. Brain cells to be exact, it was something like 0.1% brain cells. So out of like the 500,000 neurons 1000 of them were human or something. Regardless they still don't know if they are firing as Human Neurons or if they were firing as mouse neurons.

plenty of guys are pigs.
I've heard of a similar experiment done with birds. A woodgrouse and a quail I think. Made a weird looking bird with mixed coloring of both parent birds.
I'd like to see the Great White Croc-a-Shark too!

Try to imagine mixing the DNA of...say, Brad Pitt and a mustang. What would you get?

... Sorry. Horrible joke.

Anyway.
I'd love to see Komodo dragons cross-bred with something. Komodo-ligers, maybe.

As interesting and progressive as cross-breeding could be, we have to be careful what we wish for.

I was just talking to a friend about this the other day, because I happened to see this and other PHOTOSHOPPED pictures on a photo manipulation contest page. It's loosely related to this topic, so if you would like to see what might happen when animals are interbred, click
right here. Please, again, these are completely and totally 100% fake. I do not want to see any of these pictures on the Crypto forum.

Yeah here is picture I drew in one of my classes. A mix between a Whale and a Crocodile, The Croale is you will. I also had done one of a Hammerhead Shark and a Crocodile but I seemed to have misplaced it.

I think its a horrible idea Im totally against it. Could you imagine what could happen? At the moment we are at the top of the food chain but just think what would happen if say a shark were mixed with a chimp. Bizare I know but effectively that animal could live on both land and sea and would most likely be super intelligent. We could knock ourselves off the top of the food chain by creating some kind of horror movie monster. I see what you are saying regarding the pig and organ transplants but as with all things there would be people out there just waiting to abuse this and create some really nasty things and it wouldnt be long before the human and animal experiments started. I just think we shouldnt be messing with nature caus eventually its gonna come back and bite us in the ass!!
I watched this documentry on the discovery channel (I think) about head transplants and this "mad" scientist who was taking live puppies heads and upper bodies and attaching them onto the body of a larger living dog and both animals were alive. They had video footage of the dogs and it totally sickend me. I dont think Ive ever seen anything so horrifing in my entire life. And the interbreeding of species could lead the equally horrifing sights. It would be like an x file.

those pic were great thanx for sharing them
to the topic at hand i think that the creating should just be laft to nature and not the humans

I kind of understand your concern with messing with nature and some bad people could use it for bad stuff. but as far as humans being on top of the food chain there are things which can and do eat humans, and some humans I think deserve to be eaten

So I didn't bother to read all the posts* in the thread and then I forgot what I was going to post. I once karate chopped a coffee table!

*Okay, not really. I read the one about the superintelligent chimp-shark and I giggled my ass off. Can you imagine, a chimp-shark jumping out of the water and eating your brain?

LOL

I know a bit far fetched but I was trying to think of an intelligent animal and an aggressive one and those were the 2 that popped into my head. I remember seeing that dodgy Peter Benchly movie with the killer shark creatures that walked on land!! Ok I think way too much!!

the only big creatures i have ver heard that have been cross breed are lions/tigers(ligers),zebra/donkey(zonkey) and polar/grizzly bear(polagriz.)
it would be very hard to breed a creature from outside its regular species.if it's a lion it would have to be some sort of combo from the cat family.it would
be very unlikely you could breed a fish and a land animal like an ape or something!

I'm not a scientist, and even though breeding a land and sea animal don't seem plausible; I don't think its truely impossible. I'm sure sometime in the future we'll be able to selectively choose genes and dna splices and all sorts of sh** to create a truely unique animal. Science is accomplishing alot now, and I'm sure theres stuff they came from the eye of the public. At one time there will be "Shark-Chimps" jumping out of tree's into water haha.

Freaking awesome, I hate some of the "ethics" sh** going around though. Sure, there've got to be limits, but use your common sense here and lay off the sci-fi.
A crocodile-shark? That's two different CLASSES! I'd like to see them do a cross-family, or even cross-genus version of this. Ligers and all that crap are from very similar species.
