Has anyone heard the urban legend that when you find out the meaing of life you die at that moment?

Well, I have an interesting story about this subject. I was on my way to price over the weekend to visit my grandma. My uncle, cousin, my mom, my son and I were coming around a bend on HWY6 which has been deemed the deadliest highway in America, and we came upon a crash. A truck took a left turn to sharp and went down a 20 ft ditch. The passenger was thrown form the car about twenty feet into the brush. The Parimedics showed up and announced he has a broken back, broken neck, crushed pelvis and hemreging on his brain. The cops asked his girlfriend what was going on and she said 'We were arguing about the meaning of life and why we were here on earth. He was convinced that he knew it then we crashed.' About ten minutes before the abmulence left the man died. ohmy.gif sad.gif
I've heard this from other people when I was younger so I always diceided not to try to figure out why we were here. Has anyone else heard of this?

never heard of it, but I still wonder, the meaning of life? to wonder, to explore to find out the new, and old, and everything in between, to me appears to be the meaning of life *dies of heart attack*.

I just thought the whole situation was weird. Like I said I had heard about it when I was younger mainly from my religious family members 'only ask that question when your ready to go home to our heavenly father.' Then to come upon the situation this pass weekend hearing what actually happened just made me wonder. If the only people who know the meaning of life are dead, it's to bad, knowing we cant ask them. You think they'd just be very enlightened, not dead.

maybe that is the meaning of life, to find it. Once you do find your own meaning of life, your life is complete...Good thing I haven't really figured mine out yet wink2.gif

Mystics can give you a meaning to life, recognizing that the meaning of your life is whatever you find or make of it.

A mystic is someone who has had a mystical experience, which always have the following characteristics : (1) ecstasy, (2) Noesis, (3) illumination, i.e., a sense of being filled and surrounded by light, (4) recognizing polar opposites as part of one thing, i.e., life and death, war and peace. Noesis means a truth that you see in an instant, like recognizing a familiar face. It is a gestalt perception.

From a god-like perspective, things that we consider evil from the human perspective may have their purposes, either as a challenge that inspires creativity, or as a burning up of the old and worn-out, making room for new life. This may not be the best of all possible worlds, but it is certainly better with creativity, spontaneity, innocence and free will. Notice that neither medieval christianity nor modern science have any understanding of free will (animacy, challenge-and-response) and of course the Xtians blame everything on god (doG) and the scientist blame everything on chance and causality. Neither leave any room for the free will and free creativity. the divine purpose.
There is no divine plan. ~~~ Cebrakon the mystic

The meaning of life means different things to different people. When you find out what your path of life is that's when you find your own meaning of life. We all have a seperate purpose here on this planet and it is only when we find out exactly what our purpose is do we start to untangle the mysteries of life. But, like I said before, the meaning of life means different things to others.......

Thats very true Jaquat...What works for one person doesn't mean it will work for another...That's why we're all individuals...

maybe the correct answer, is their a question to the answer of life at all? how can life have a meaning if life has no question? how can life wonder about its meaning, perpas when it is itself being part of the answer, which would mean if their is a meaning to life at all, it is to live... plain and simple.

maybe the meaning of life is far more simple, the answer? to die.
Godofcats
buddhist believe you reach a state called nirvana once you've found what your own reason of being is. this is what happened to buddah and how he became the buddah. once you've reached this state of nirvana you can choose to leave your body and float in the heavens of the never ending nirvana (which is probably what this legend is if true) or stay and help people which the buddah did. i seen somebody up there mention that everybodys meaning of life is differn't. once you find out what it is.....who knows.....maybe nirvana or suddon death as suggested.

For the record, it made a terrible movie.

If life is about finding the meaning of life, what about those who don't care to know the meaning of life?
And if one dies once finding that meaning, do those who not find the meaning not die?
If they do die, is it there body that dies, but not there person?
And does that "person" then come back to live again in search of the meaning of life?

maybe it's not that you figure it out and then die, maybe it's when you're about to die it's revealed to you tongue.gif

I think the meaning of life is to have a life that means something.

I also think that people probably die after they think they've discovered it because they are so excited they are not paying attention to the sharp curve in the road, or the guy with the axe, or the rabid bear that is creeping up behind them.

Okay, you got me. wink2.gif

It was worth a try.

We will never know on this Earth if there is a 'meaning' to our lives. Interesting though it is, it is an enigma. Because, if we spend our lives looking for it's meaning, that means that once we have found it, the meaning loses it's meaning. And for those who believe in an afterlife, it may be revealed at that time, but you are already dead, and the answer still eludes the living.

The answer does not elude mystics, at least those who have what Richard Bucke called "Cosmic Consciousness." This has nothing to do with gods or religions. There is a purpose that runs through all things, that shows us a higher meaning behind challenges and renewals, seen as evil or bad from the narrow point of view of ordinary consciousness. Creativity, spontaneity, joy, beauty, freedom, freshness, innocence, grace. That is about as close as I can come to putting it into English. There is no one word for it. This pattern is what Cosmic Consciousness shows us, in a very concrete and detailed way. But mystics are seldom willing to talk about it, afraid that would be "casting pearls before swine," who root around in the mud and swill.

Hi, my name is Timothy Tang and I have just completed the book, "Real answers to The Meaning of Life and finding Happiness".

Many people feel that the interpretation to The Meaning of Life question is too subjective to have any definite objective answer but I have managed to formulate a real and objective answer to the ultimate question of human existence.

I have made a blog that introduces the book. Do check it out.

I've never heard that no, interesting though.

The meaning of life is what you want it to be since perception is the key. You are put here as a test, to learn from others and to prepare your for something greater perhaps.

The next time someone asks you "what's the meaning of life", just say that it's anything you want it to be. I think that's what I've come to believe ... since anything you want CAN happen if you REALLY want it to.
Lord Umbarger
The meaning of life:
Here goes, I hope I don't kill anyone.....

To learn from the past and the mistakes of others.
To eat, drink, be merry and propagate your species.
To live as long as you can to fulfill the requirements of the previous meaning.
To make the world a better, safer place for your children than it was when you were born.
To know and understand more than you did when you were born.
To hope to remember all that stuff your parents did and why they did it.
To be better parents than your parents were.
Pain is a four letter word, just like sh** and ****, and should be avoided at all costs.
Insurmountable challenge is hell on Earth and Hell sucks. Teamwork helps.
Heaven on Earth would be boring. Without challenge, why wake up every day?
The number one meaning of life? Why does it happen? Because it happens. Why are we here? Because we are here. The more weight you can take off the person next toyou, the better off the both of you are. Pitch in, do your part get up early and try to do a little something extra each day.

Beleive me, doing so might not answer all your questions but, it will make every day a little more fun.

I know this maybe sound lame or stupid but i think the meaning of life is Death...

Don't really know why i think that but i've always thought that the meaning og life were Death.
Lord Umbarger
There was a short story on this subject that was part of a trilogy movie from the 1970's or a Night GAllery episode where somebody figured out the meaning of life and went mad. He told someone else and they went mad. At the end of the story, somebody went to a radio station and started broadcasting it.

I miss those cheesy 70's show like that. I do remember that it sort of had a Rod Serling feel to it though

Yea, I actually have heard that myth before, it would be weird if it was true.

"42"? Isn't that a reference to the "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy"?

Here is another good point. Someone starts a thread dealing with the possibility that one dies when they discover the meaning of life and almost every post that follows the OP is someone posting the meaning of life! We must all have a serious death wish, huh? laugh.gif w00t.gif

here's the real meaning of life. Before you're born you have a certain task or lesson to learn while you're alive. Once you die and reborn you have a new lesson to learn, then once you learn everything there is to learn you ascend

Lord Umbarger
So, you ascend to a higher level. O.K., what is the purpose of that? Why would nature be ordered as such?

Somebody has to throw a wench (spanner) into things, usually it's me.
Hasaki
The only thing that we are certain about in life is Death itself, so to me the meaning of life is to live, until dead.
