here's what Wiki has to say about it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piri_Reis_map

and here's the map in full detail

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...reis_harita.jpg

has someone here in the forum tried to debunk this? tried the search function but didnt find anything. here's my oppinion about it. I dont think Piri Reis invented this, i think he had some old maps to backup his own creation. This map is very detailed and it even shows the Poles without the ice covering them. I think this map or the one's he was based in were of Atlantean /Lemurian origin. Even American military and scientists tried to debunk this but couldnt because there's nothing in it that indicates its a hoax, it's precision and detail are amazing for Piri Reis era.

Hi, great topic, thanks for starting it. I will be very interested to see what people have to say about this. I used to work with a guy who was studying civil engineering and when I broached the subject of the Piri Reis Map with him he bluntly dismissed it as a hoax. I really hope it is authentic, that is much more exciting.

The Piri Re'is map is 100% authentic.

But those who claim it depicts Antarctica are 100% thick ...... (it takes about 5 seconds to confirm it does not depict Antarctica. Although i appreciate not everyone has eyes wink2.gif )

What's more interesting about it is that it may indicate evidence of a Portuguese voyage as far south as Tierra del Fuego several years before official records show they reached that far.

You may want to look at the search function. There are several old threads about this map.
For what it's worth, I'll throw out the title of Gavin Menzies' book 1421, which has a possible explanation for the map -- Chinese voyages in the early 15th Century.
Not my area of speciality, but he seems to put together a good mix of practical knowledge of sailing and decent (non-internet!) research.

He did use the search function. But didn't find anything, Jaylemurph.

I don't know if it's real or not. Who knows. Maybe or maybe not. I'll read the wiki article later.

But thanks for the links.

I find that to be extremely unlikely.

Here's a link to seven pages of individual posts mentioning Piri Reis:

Included among these returns is an excellent post I found by what appears to be a very knowledgeable and extremely well-spoken individual who apparently knows what he's talking about on this subject. Here's a link to that individual post by that erudite poster:

LOL. Piri Ries, is the western name for this muslim pioneer. His map is amazing, but the way he did it was, byt collaberating older ancient maps with knowledge that he gained and put this map together. The map consists of parts which he did travel to himself and other parts taken from ancient accurate maps. Maybe from greeks, atlanteansand lemurian etc. Very cleverly done, but no hoax, just a good map, taken from older maps and actual voyages he made.
