it's pretty scary really

as kids we grow up believing what teachers and our parents tell us then find out its all a load of C R A P

i wonder about people who stop learning ie don't keep up to date with changing events, they go to their grave never knowing that all they've been taught is a lie?

i also wonder what else is a complete lie that we take for granted just because we're told

what about global warming? i read somewhere that things aren't as bad as what is made out?

Thats true. actually i woner if anyone knows of some historical storys and knows the truth of what really happened, if you have got ant tell us, actually it might make a good thread.
The Sandman
i am still watching it....now

"When the legend becomes fact, Print the legend!"

How much of the facts we study in our school history books are real and how much are legends???
Mars
I can't believe some things that are taught. Like "Columbus thought the Earth was flat". Even the ancient Sumerians knew the earth was round! Geez.

Not to get off the Topic to far but what gets me is the amount of people who start talking about the end of the world and when it is going to happen.....

No one knows, even if you were to somehow catch an Angel and ask they could not tell you (if you believe the Bible) there is only one almighty being that knows..... http://bible.cc/matthew/24-36.htm

Hi Louie,

Great video, best entertainment I've seen in a long while!!

Here's one factoid to start off your collection.... As you know in Northern Europe we use the middle and index finger raised in a reverse of the "V" for victory sign, as a sign meaning the same as "shooting the finger" at someone (just the middle finger).

The factoid: the Longbow required great strength to use and it was plucked by these two fingers (not one as in the video), and it was these two fingers that were cut off when a longbowman was captured. In battles (including Agincourt) it was this reverse "V" sign that was used to taunt the French.

Note: you might recall seeing photographs of Churchill and Charles de Gaulle together, and de Gaulle always looks P***** off when Churchill used the "V" sign!! laugh.gif tongue.gif

That was a lot of fun...

I knew all of these, but it's a brilliant lecture, the mix of modern pop culture and history and literature was fantastic. Thanks for posting that, it saved me from watching more re-runs of CSI tonight original.gif

Also a little fact. i read some time ago, That Nero couldent have played the fiddle while Rome burned, as the fiddle or violin was not invented by then, they lyre or his other instrument, sure but not the fiddle.

Usually, I'll start watching things like this and get bored. With this one, I got hooked and had to watch it through. Superb.

Nice one Louie. thumbsup.gif

I wish my teachers and lecturers were like this guy, i'd have learnt a heck of a lot more.

I've seen this numerous times. It's amazing how we put historians and archaeologists on a pedestal, at least in the present, and we never question the things they tell us. Watching something like this makes me question everything we know about history. Think of the people who are exactly like Bush is now, except they are in the past. There were people like him, with amazing amounts of power, who were able to write history the way they wanted it to be. It's amazing that people will just blindly believe in whatever is told to them.

Good find Louie.

Wuhl/scene reminded me of the Robin Williams/Dead Poets Society. lol!
He dosn't show it but i think the man is deadly serious in his teachings & gett'n his point/s across loud & clear the best way possible, with humor.

Wonder how long it's gonna take before mainstream black ball this dude?

That was a very enjoyable video. I suspect that another myth is that America is named in honor of Amerigo Vespucci, the map maker. But apparently Amerigo changed his name from Alberigo to Amerigo after the name appeared on maps. I would imagine if the new continent was named after Vespuuci it would have been called Vespucciland. There are a couple of theories about the origin of the name that you can can read about here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americas#Naming But I would like to propose another. The name America seems to me to be made of two Latin words, Ame, which seems to mean perhaps Love or Friend, and Rica, which means Rich. Perhaps America means Rich Friend or some such thing? I'm pretty weak on Latin.

Well, personally I believe that the name comes from Japanese. Ame (candy) + rika (science). Candy science! Yeah!

On a more general note, the comedian isn't revealing any secret truths, he's just comparing what the historical record actually tells us to the version of history that has entered popular conciousness. You'll notice that the authors who perpetrated the myths tended to be closer to novelists than actual historians. What he's presenting as the real history is more or less mainstream. So no blackballing.

That was a very interesting video. Makes me wonder what else I don't really know about history.
That reminds me of something I heard once, not sure where I heard it but... "Half of history is covering up what really happened."
