Full Version: Career?

Though I'm pretty sure of the answer, is there any career remotely related to the study of cryptozooligical phenomenon? I was reading a novel the other day [Haunted by Chuck Palahnuik, greatest author ever, highly reccomend it], and one of the characters was supposedly studying cryptozoology in her university/college, and was doing reputed 'feild work'. Do you know of any university/college that offers this course, or anything similar? If so, a degree in it won't really help you in the real world, right? -_-'

Are there any well paying, sturdy jobs out there related to paranormal phenomenon at all?

I don't have any courses in my university. I was actually looking into taking a class or 2 but couldn't find any classes. To be honest, I don't think you'll make a good living doing just paranormal stuff. Usually, the people researching crytids have a degree in biology, biochem, etc. So I think you should take some biology courses and see how you like those.

probably you can be a priest

Yeah, one more year and I'm done. I have no clue WHAT I want to do with my life, and I've always <3ed cryptozoology, but soon realized that it was not a smart career plan. I think its mainly a hobby..

You can try mailing or emailing Loren Coleman, the author and investigator to a lot of cryptid related and fortean phenomena. He made it a living, by selling many books on the subject, and maybe you can ask him if there are any good paying jobs on the subject. www.thecryptozoologist.com I hear he does respond to mail and is friendly.

Cryptozoology falls into the category of Pseudoscience, which means that it can never be taught legally or formally in University, College or any other educational institution. The base of some the-so-called cryptozoologist are varied, from physics, biology scientist to noobs (like most of us) with no basic palaeontology, biology or mythology. I, for instance am a lawyer by profession original.gif

I'd love to be the Indiana Jones of Crypto Research.
But there's no money in it, as far as I can tell. So that pretty much tanks that idea. You can't travel to such remote areas with only good intentions. Equipment and vehicles cost major money.
Celumnaz
go zoology then specialize

Being a noob is the best thing to do...ever!

thought so. Problem is, I still have no clue what to do with my life. D:

Anyways, just joined the forums so hope my stay here will be a long and informative one. I'm a paranormal freak, btw, but I'm obsessed with cryptozoology. I've collected a few pictures, a few obvious hoaxes, a few deformed animals and a few a bit more intruiging but I have no clue where to post them. Anyway, how -is- this forum community? Is it friendly, ithgt knit?

Ya this is a friendly community. Even when getting into arguments (as I always do), it's nice to see that people are attacking the argument rather than the person making the argument.

Great. >>;; I feel like such a newb.

Is my sig banworthy, or is light profanity allowed?

I always thought that cryptozoology would be more of a hobby for most people (considering it's not an actual job and there is no way it could pay). I think "cyrptozoologists" are generally A)authors on books about crypitds, B)biologists/zoologists who believe a certain cryptid is plausible so they investigate on about it, or C) overly obsessed rednecks (ie; "dem sasquatches stoles my mail box, I gonna track hims down and hangs him up in my den, yeh-hah!")

Welcome to the community, and feel no pressure about being new.
I'm not entirely sure if your sig is banworthy, but I've got to say, it's incredibly awesome (I'm reading through Fight Club right now, and the author has an amazing style)
Best to read the TOS, and make sure.

It is friendly. But how in the world could you mispell that?! Just ridiculous. Go learn to write, then come back and post. Unbelievable!...Hahaha. Just kidding with you! Trying to be ironic and sarcastic. This subforum generally stays pretty much on track without flaming and such. Welcome to the forums! thumbsup.gif

Really? If you're referring to an open seminar/open lecture held in an university then I guess it's true, as it is bascially possible. But as a running/regular class in an university? I don't think so. Unless it's the Vlad Tepes University of Transylvannia, I wouldn't bother to debate...

Bball: ;D I was -this- close to searching through your posts for the slightest grammatical error.

Unnassuming: The banner's actually from the movie, but the quotes from the book. I first saw the movie, thought it was so amazing that I read the books, then I was blown away. Chuck Palahnuik is by far the best author I've ever read, and I am an avid reader. I've currently read Choke, Fight Club and Haunted, and I'm about to start Lullaby, then go unto Rant. And I'm looking for Survivor but I can't find it anywhere.

He's amazing.

The only one I can think of is a Parapsychology Degree.

I live in Cambridge, UK - home of the Universities - and these degrees are very popular.

Although a degree in Parapsychology wouldn't necessarily mean people would take you seriously, it would open a few doors if you wanted to get into the Ghost Hunting field. If you could then convince Cambridge University to fund some of your study, you're sorted financially.

Sub-degrees in this field are Transpersonal Psychology and Critical Psychology.

You can get an MA in Parapsychology too.

^We don't have the study Parapsychology in Indonesia. I don't think that our university is credible enough to teach it, or maybe we consider it a knowledge most Indonesian won't need. Or maybe it's just too controversial. I have a friend who his mum have a degree on Parapsychology from a foreign university, though.

Your not the only one who thought about taking courses for cryptozoology.

Months ago I had found an institution that provided courses online, after reading it and getting excited; I found out that the info was outdated by 10 years. Darn!

But check this out:

I think quite a few uni's teach folklore subjects within the arts faculty. Obviously topics such as vampirism would come under this, cryptozoology might in a cultural sense....but not from a scientific angle, which is probably what the OP is about.

No, no I don't think so. I heard that they were also including UFO's and possibly crop circles too at some colleges. WOW could you image studying UFO's as a required course. ? LOL
