I suffer from SP roughly one to two times per week, this has been for the last five or six years. Before that it was on the odd occasion.

I have had a weight on my chest that has completely stopped me from being able to move, scared out of my wits to move a limb or make a noise, I have also seen what appeared to be the most horrible face imaginable bearing down on me. If these "beings" exist and are not in my imagination, I dread to think what they want, but if there is a word that is worse than terror, that is the feeling that is experienced. These are not, I hasten to add, lucid dreams, I have had lucid dreams on numerous occasions and they are way different from SP.

If I can manage to collect my thoughts and stay relatively calm (that's a laugh really, an understatement!) an out of the body experience will result - again not a lucid dream as an out of the body experience is completely different from OOBE.

Skeptics may dispute sleep paralysis, but from where I am standing, there is no dispute, it exists and anyone that has suffered it and thinks they are going mad - you are not.

I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Sleep paralysis. lol

You may laugh Kiddglock, you have obviously never experienced it. It is frightening and it can appear to the person concerned that they are going to die. Of course, that is funny to those that have never had SP...

The first time was when I was around 6. I was unable to move. My eyes were open and I was bascially seeing cartoon character in real life and they were not the nice ones. It was terrible. The second time was at 20 after a night of partying and no sleep. It happened when I fell asleep at work. I could see & hear but not move and there was the sense of another presence in the room.

Out of interest Eric, was you extremely tired when you fell asleep at work? The reason I ask this is because I will get SP if I am very tired. I am trying to find out if there is a common factor in this SP thing.

Yes. I had only had 2 hours of sleep and I was hung over.

Ah, now that's interesting then.

Anybody else find that they have sleep paralysis when very tired?

Probably a common factor here, I know there is with my own experience, that's how I can avoid it a lot of the time, it could help some others.

Our Neurologist stated SP occurs due to the neurtransmitters in the brain, being hypercharged. My son has it, and he swears he is not alone, he cant breathe or move etc. He was taught some meditation exercises to stop it from occuring. Normally it happens more when someone is napping, or overtired. So, both of what you two experienced sounds consistant with those scenarios. I had it a few times as a child so I know how frightening they are and we feel so helpless because we cant fight back, or scream for help, till we get out of REM stage of sleep, and by the time we do, its all too real..Sorry LF you still suffer from this..JN

I find it easier to achieve SP when i wake up in the morning actually . I have been trying to induce it lately and its just so hard to do for me when i am tired .

No, it's okay lol.

Actually, if I feel that SP is going to occur, I can just about (sometimes) manage to mumble and make some sort of noise before it takes over, this is the signal to my husband to shake me, this brings me out of it. Unfortunately, I don't always manage to do that, weird experiences will follow - it's the price to pay for being a weirdo I guess laugh.gif

LOL You are not a weirdo. Everything you described is text book SP, and it is more common than we know. My son still gets one every now and then, and if I hear him making a strange noise, I slowly wake him, its easy to see he is in distress..You could try some lucid dreaming so that you control the dream and come out of it easier, have you ever tried? Yes, if I leave the SP to take its course, I do end up with an OOBE which then can go into a lucid dream.

The thing is with this is that if I do that, when I eventually wake up, I can feel jaded and some of these OOBEs can be a bit peculiar and make me feel out of sorts after. Really I should keep a record of them all, I am forever asking others on here if they record their experiences, it is a shame I don't walk my talk lol.

LOL OBE's are fantastic, but I havent experienced one in a long time, and wouldnt know how to induce it. TAKE notes, keep records, that would be an interesting read..JN yes.gif

Well if you are weirdo than so am I, not a comforting thought I know original.gif , but I have it several times a week.
It doesn't seem to make any difference whether or not I'm overtired, although I usually stay up late to avoid it.
Even if I go to bed at 7 o'clock, chances are, I'll still experience it.
You are lucky Lotus, that your husband is able to shake you and bring you out of it. My husband doesn't hear a thing, after his head hits the pillow. wink2.gif

You would have to let go of the fear of SP to be able to induce an obe

i've had my SP experiences and even though i think it may be a physical problem i also think something spiritual is involved. too many coincidences like praying and being released for example.
Belle.
For me the best way to stop it is: Lay on your side not your back, say no to drugs, don't get overtired, don't get too scared/hypervigilant before bed. Living stress free and healthy helps a lot.

Cheers

Good point about laying on your side!

I have found that if I do try to sleep on my back, SP or an OOBE will happen about 90% of the time. Why I still even attempt to sleep on my back is a mystery, especially as I know what could happen.

hello everyone am new to this website and i just wanted to say hi first off.
but i really made this topic because i think i might be mentally ill, or am i really being violently attack by a spiritual thing. it has really gotten to the point where i don't want to sleep alone anymore. because thats when it mostly/always happens.
what im about to tell you is real if you want to believe me or not is all up to you. i think i first encounter the ghost when i was 10 years old. i lived in an old style house in Ohio. where for some reason my bedroom had a window that showed the dinning room. i know kinda weird huh? anyways one day i was playing my snes and that when i first saw it for the first time a shadow wearing a top hat. in my dinning room window. that was the only time i say that spirit at my old house. the next time would be when i moved out of that house to my new apartment. i still remember it i was sleeping in my bedroom. then for no reason i woke up. but then this strong force was pulling me down really really hard. i remember my head moved horizontal because of the force. and seeing my body actually below the surface of the bed. i was scared but it soon stop. for a couple of nights i didn't sleep at all.. o yea prior to that i did see that shadow figure around my apartment but really didnt think nothing of it. the attack only happen once in my apartment so i kinda didnt forget about it but, i wasn't to worry for some reason. but i moved again to a new apartment and now im being attack almost once a week. i cant/dont want to sleep anymore. i try to stay awake all night. even in school night i usually go to bed at 5 o'clock. i dont know if am losing my mind. one night i was laying in my bed while i saw this gray human figure trying to kiss me. the next night i cant move vibrating around my bed. i don't think am just dreaming this really. just two weeks ago i was sleeping then i woke up paralyze cant move while i see this shadow holding me there. but hes face was weird i dont know not human.
am thinking about video taping me sleeping but the problem is i need a video tap recorder which cost money so yea ,,,,
i know you guys most likely think this is fake really am not lieing has this happen to any1 else.

ive also seen the top hat figure when i was young[11]-and i was wide awake in the middle of the day playing and it was not human it moved forward butsideways at the same time-example-2 steps glinding to one side to move 1 step forward i was alone in front of my building and it appered acroos the street were there was a grammer school under construction where us kid played/made a secluded clubhouse out of rubble/shrubs and apiered out of nowhere

As I recall it, I was trying to scare my mother. I actually self-induced my paralysis in an effort to make her think I was dead. Yes, I know. lol. But regardless, I held my breath a few moments, and fixed my vision. I heard her coming a minute or so later. I continued with my ruse. She entered and called my name. She looked at me closer. My eyes were open but I didn't flinch. I could see the panic enter her face. Ok..joke is over. She started to shake me, but I couldn't snap out of it. She was crying and then she tiled my head back and looked in my mouth. She was checking my airway for obstructions. I couldn't breath or move and my vision was fixed. She put her ear to my chest and I think she was about to do CPR on me when I suddenly inhaled deeply, and I came out of it. I hadn't breathed in 4 minutes. I didn't think it was funny any more. And I never told her of my devious plan. Perhaps SOMEBODY was teaching me a lesson. ~Jackal
