QUOTE
Anyway, the "hole" is there because the surface area being filled by the yellow and green shapes has changed. The red and blue triangles have switched positions in the two pictures. In the first picture, the area to be filled is 3x5 squares (15). In the bottom picture, the dimensions have changed to 2x8 squares (16), thus the apparent "missing square".
[attachmentid=14450][attachmentid=14451]

On the right track, but it's actually simpler than that.
The right side image has the two triangles superimposed, showing the difference is in the hypotenuse (diagonal line) of the triangles!
The area of the two 'triangles' is actually the same, since it is made up of the same pieces. But because the lower 'triangle' has a 'hypotenuse' that is actually convex, this extra area is the equivalent of one square, which is why the right side shape has a missing square

Q. In which year did Australia switch to decimal currency? Bonus points if you know the exact date.
Elvis
February 14th, 1966?

OK, I just did my Standard Grade maths exam yesterday, so this might seem hard, you've just got to think about it.

The side length of a cube is 2x cm.

The expression for the volume in cubic centimetres is equal to the expression for the surface area in square centimetres.

Calculate the side length of the cube. (or basically 2 times x).

So you want to figure out "x" from the above data. If no-one can figure it out from the above data by this time tomorrow, I'll post the answer. Please try though, I had to do it and I'm 15, I'm fairly sure I've got it right.

Q: In the game of chess, where does the term "checkmate" come from and what does it mean?

It means that you have cornered the King so that he is being attacked by pieces and there is no possible means for it to escape.

And where it comes from. It was an Australian term invented when two Aussie grand champions were playing each other when one made his move, then slowly realised that he'd won. The saying went something like this: "Check...........................long pause ............the penny drops .............Maaaaate".
