why can't we travel in time
Perhaps you mean "why can't we travel THROUGH time". We travel in time as a matter of course.
Anyhow, this is more in the realms of theory than trivia, but as Pharaoh mentioned, we do not have the technology to do so yet. Science fiction gives us many a fanciful tale about how it might be possible to travel through time using blackholes, and tachion bursts and radion emissions and any number of other phenomena/technologies you care to think of.
Perhaps the best proof that time travel is NOT possible though is the fact that if time travel were invented at some point in the future, then why have we not seen anything here in the present (a time machine popping in someone's yard for example at some time in the past). Though it's arguable that indeed people have gone back in time with future technologies, which is how archaeological sites supposed to be made thousands of years ago seem beyond the technology of the society which supposedly created it.
Does this make sense? Probably not.
