| QUOTE (Lionel @ Oct 9 2003, 07:09 AM) |
| Q. What ancient work of art tells the story of William the Conqueror's defeat of Saxon King Harold II at Hastings in 1066? |
A. Bishop Odo commissioned the
Bayeux Tapestry after the battle of 1066.
(Bayeux... Cool name!)
Actually, it started out as a bed covering for the Bishop, but the seamstresses got to chugging some fermented grape juice and, well, they sort of lost track of time, as it were. Next thing they new the dern thing was some 70 meters long, but only a half meter wide. Sure, the Bishop was a thin guy, into aerobics and all. But even a half meter was a bit too narrow even for his slight frame. To cover their "oops!" (and the fact that most of the wine cellar was now bare), they claimed it to be a wall hanging for his birthday.
And so... well, that's history in the making!
