| Q. Whose career was ruined when he failed to respond to RMS Titanic's distress flares? |
A. Mr Stanley Lord, Captain of the SS California.
Actually, Captain Lord would have responded immediately had he heard the actual call of alarm. Being half asleep as he was, he did not hear “Ship distress flairs! Captain to the bridge! Emergency! All hands on deck, sir!” What came to his ears was “She’s undressed, Sair! Keepin’ da rhythm! Can ye see?!? Her hands are on me p***er!” Well, CPT Lord just figured the crew had gotten into the wine casks again and decided to deal with it in the morning.
Meanwhile, Crewman Riley was down swabbing the deck in the radio room, since the Radioman had went to bed for the night. To help him while away the boring labor he had tuned the radio to a catchy polka and was merrily dancing away to the tune of “…---… …---…” stepstepstep steeepsteeepsteeep stepstepstep…
Captain Lord got hit with a world of misery, but Crewman Riley got a commendation for a spotless radio room.

| QUOTE (golam @ Oct 31 2003, 05:32 AM) |
Q.who founded the S.A.S ( special air service ) |
A. Captain David Stirling, RAF, in WWII.
Actually, the term "Special Air Service" was originally attributed to Bonnie "Boom Boom" Burdell in southern France. Boom Boom was travelling with the Taverrell Caberet and Polka Group a small village in France, during WWII when the local hospital was overrun with German soldiers. Knowing that without some action to prevent it, the town would fall to the enmey. So, Boom Boom borrowed (read "stole") asome greasy coveralls from a local mechanics shop and began checking the German's transport vehicles. Being very sly, she proceeded to fill all the tires with helium. Why this occurred to her remains a mystery to this day, but the action worked. As the enemy soldiers proceeded down the cobbled streets of some sections of town the vehicles began bouncing higher and higher! Some began bouncing off the walls of buildings, effectively beating the bejabbers out of the occupants. It is said that one particular jeep actually bounced so high as to nearly achieve orbit! In any case, the quick thinking of one caberet dancer (dancer??) saved the village, and the Allied Forces that rolled into town shortly thereafter bestowed upon Boom Boom the (unofficial) designation of "Special Air Service."

DJ, Marie did win two Nobels: one in physics in 1903, and one in chemestry in 1911.
golam asks for
two in chemestry.

If it is any consolation, THREE Curies won Chemestry Nobels: Marie and her husband Pierre shared it in 1911, and their daughter Irene won it in 1935 (shared with her husband, Frédéric Joliot)
