I take great interest in mothman, as do others on this board.
I think the first misconception is the classification of the entity as a cryptid....it belongs in a UFO casefile instead, anyone truly familiar with the story will know this.
Despite what some may believe, there is actually massive amounts of evidence to support the entities existence. The sightings of 1966 - 1967 lasted for a period of 11 and a half months, and 100 credible witnesses came forward to report the entity. Some of them signing sworn affidavits to the effect.
Even though the creature itself was not photographed or filmed, the UFO flap over Ohio and West Virginia was documented greatly. Compared to the thousands of UFO reports, mothman's 100 sightings is a pale comparison to the true phenomenon.
Mothman it seems was definately not the star of the show.
