I'm considering buying it also i would want to ask are there many people playing on battlenet ?

Diablo 2 is a great game if you like rpgs i would say get it.
You shouldn't have any problem finding people to play with on bnet.
Yep, the game is about 8 years old now, and still going very strong. =D

I still play diablo 2 lod on a regular basis.
i used to play that game allot. but then i played WoW and never looked back 
if your new then my suggestion is never play on open Bnet. there is hardly anyone on because of all the hacked items making the game completely unfair to any honest player. plus you don't get the uber quests and if you have D2 then you have to get LOD if you want to play on Bnet cuz every ones got it and you wont be able to play with people who do unless you have it to. but even normal Bnet has its problems. theres no hacks but 99% of all the good stuff like high runes and awesome items that you would trade for are dupes and if there not permed they will disappear when you log out of the world your in. this can make it extremely hard for an honest player to get any thing from trades cuz every body wants high runes which are extremely rare to find normally. so if your not a duper then your only hope is if some one is willing to trade Pgems for the item you want. you also have to be very very careful of what you put your skill points into because once there spent there gone and it is possible to make a completely useless character. no where is this more profound then in hell mode. once you get to hell mode with your character (even if he/she did really well in normal and nightmare) you will most of the time find out that the skill build you went with is completely useless in hell mode making it impossible for your character to ever finish it. <--- so you basically waisted countless hours creating a character that will never be able to finish the game. oh and one last thing! don't play on europe Bnet not every one speaks the same language and i don't know what it is with european people on there but they always seem to have a crab up there @$$es about something and can be down right mean!

Diablo 2 was probably the most addictive game i have ever played. and i havent been playing with diablo 2 for awhile so i think my account got deleted (nooo hard 'work' lost

Rushing lowbies to hell ancients for their hell forge and killing baal with a full room will ensure he drops unique gear . I also often give items away to lowbies like uniques and runed items etc if i get better stuff.
I'd say it is one of the best RPGs of our time. It had everything just right. Although I've played it for too long, and now I'm too busy to get hooked again 
Diablo II is awesome. I played that game for a long time. Then my daughter stole if off my desk one day and now she's addicted to it; I haven't seen it since. She's probably a better player at it than I am (but then again most kids today smoke us adults at games just like we did to our parents back in the day - I was one mean Atari player).
Overall Diablo II 3 thumbs up. No I don't have three thumbs but that sure would make me a better game player

Well if anyone is interested in starting a UM D2 guild I am more then willing...

Right now I am working on a summoning necro for whom I just got the best wand in the game for 'The Arm of King Leoric'. I am also working on a Druid and Cold Sorceress as well.
If anyone wants tips in regards to skill and stat point allocation with any class I will be more then willing to help you out.

i played DII long ago.. had a necro called 'prez_bush' got him up to lvl 82.. rushed thru basic, medium level then spent most of my time smashing cows on hell mode, got bored and left.
necro is the easiset character, just pump summoning (raise dead) and corpse explode is handy also ..you'll have no problems if you can just avoid the monsters and missile weapons, spells..
..a bit boring but handy for grinding and finding stuff..

..a bit boring but handy for grinding and finding stuff..My necro is better then yours with my lvl 33 skel mastery and 30 skeleton and lets not forget about all my other skills as well. Corpse explode in 1.11b is really a useless skill and Blood Golem and Iron Maiden have been nerfed as well.
The best weapon in the game for necro is The Arm of King Leoric
I can solo Hell Baal without having 1 skeleton die.
