Hi all
Cryptozoology is the search for known animals. It is often attributed to noted zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans.

I think what Dave means is that Cryptozoology shouldn't be lumped in with Legends and Myths because it deals with known animals.....
Maybe you should take this up with Saruman.....He's the site's boss......

BTW Welcome to UM Dave.....

Thanks for clarifying that, you don't know how many times I came to the Cryptozoology section, saw all of these threads about cryptids and asked myself 'wtf is going on here?'
I think you meant to write unknown not known by the way...lol

I would assume so, as well, since 'crypto' denotes hidden or concealed. As in cryptic crossword clues. Sometimes it's myths or unsubstantiated stories that are the main information about a being.

^I can safely say this is one of the most confusing thread. Especially in "purpose" category.

no, cryptozoology is the study of unknown animals, or animals thought to exist, but are unknown weather to truly exist or not.
the study of known animals is just... zoology

Just to clear it up, "Cryptozoology...is the search for animals believed to exist, but for which conclusive evidence is missing. The field also includes the search for known animals believed to be extinct. People who study or search for such animals are called cryptozoologists, while the hypothetical creatures involved are sometimes called "cryptids", a term coined by John Wall in 1983." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptozoology)
So it seems Bigfoot, Nessie, the chupacabra, these types of creatures are cryptids and fall into the study of cryptozoology, as do thylacines and other creatures who once existed and are now presumed extinct. Creatures such as unicorns, for example, probably don't fall under cryptozoology and are accepted as mythical.
