My mom took this class and it was on superstioins and it said that if you leave closets and drawyers open it is a invations for the devil to comee into your house
Fluffybunny
That sounds rather random. I wouldnt put much belief into something like that. Even amongst urban legends that one is pretty silly.

The clue is in the subject matter of the class. It was about superstitions. Rational people have no need to be fearful of superstitions. Here is another one....

When finished eating a boiled egg, push the spoon through the bottom of the empty shell to let the devil out

I'm fairly confident the devil does not exist, if he did I doubt he would live in a boiled egg original.gif

Heck i must have loads of them . i'm always leaving something open.

I hardly think its true do you or we would all be in serious trouble LOL . . i know what i would have told whoever was teaching it, but thats not allowed to be said on this board original.gif

put it this way if i was your mum i'd be finding a new class . some people these days teaching this stuff .how gullible do they think we are ?

They used to believe that if you didn't cover your mouth and nose when you sneezed, that the devil could/would get into your body.

LOL that reminds me of one my daughter got told at school last year that if you sneeze you have to perform this lengthy ritual of jumping up .sitting down. clapping 6 times and then washing your hands and clapping again so many times . otherwise you would die within ten days rolleyes.gif .

I had a hard time explaining to her that it wasn't true but she is only 7 and kids are funny with what they come up with in the playground .
Demon Chipmunk
Ya i posted it here because it was kinda funny
kids are funny with what they come up with in the playground .
When i was in frst grade a kid said he was a werewolf and was gonna come kill me i was so scared that my mom had to send in a note to the first grade teacher so she could have a private talk withthe kid

Well if that was the case of the devil visiting if you left drawers and closets open, then he would have been a permanent fixture at our house...I'm sure your mom meant well in telling you this, or maybe she was trying to scare you to straighten up your room original.gif

An old friend of mine now deceased used to be the worst. He was the extra bartender and cleanup man at a small private club I attend. Really It's just a group of guys who hang out at a bookie's place.

1. He would set all the clocks to different times. He said you shouldn't have your clocks in sync cause then "they" could get your schedule down and lay in wait for you.

2. He absolutely would not allow anyone to leave a barstool or a chair at the poker table out of place. He wanted all the chairs and stools pushed up ander the table or bar if no one was sitting on it, even if you just got up to take a bathroom break he would wipe the seat off and slide it in. he said that was like asking a spirit to come on in and have a seat.

3. He absolutely would not sweep or take out trash on a Sunday. He had no problem with taking a couple of shots of vodka before church or choir practice or any other sort of work on Sunday but he wouldn't take out the trash or sweep.

4. He would not polish a mirror because he said you might wipe yourself out.

He had hundreds of them but these come to mind first.

From reading some of these i wonder if superstitions lead to Obsessive compulsove disorder .

my mother suffers from it and i assumed it was down to her mental ilness and it obviously is partly . but i remember vaguely her telling me that when she was a kid she used to brush her hair 100 srtrokes a night before bed cause it kept spirits
away <--this is what she believed LOL . i wonder if these childhood superstitions lead some to become obsessive in later life .or at least play a part in it .

IMO, some superstitions prey on your weaknesses, so, it makes sense for OCD to develop with some people due to such influences.

Hi! This is demon chipmunk's mom. I took a class in college entitled "Children's Literature" and one section was on superstitions. For some reason, this one stuck in my head all these years. So, although I don't believe the superstition myself [wink], I always make sure that my drawers and closets are closed. And as the quoted poster stated, knowing my son, it seemed like a GREAT way to get him to close his closet doors and push in his dresser drawers. Sad to say, it has not worked.

I'll have to try some other means. Maybe a slap upside the head?

Methinks this particular superstition was created by angry mothers who wanted their kids to keep their bedrooms tidy!

This has nothing to do with closets and drawers being left open, but I have a friend of mine who used to fight with his son about taking out the garbage...Finally he had it, and put the garbage barrels in the kids room while he was sleeping...The smell was so bad, that his son took the hint and he hasn't had a problem since... laugh.gif
Beautiful Enigma
Oh great ... make me even more nervous around closets. disgust.gif

I heard that if you don't cover your electronics at night they can serve as a portal for demonic entities. I actually believed it for about 1 year, I was 13 when I heard about it. I figure if something is going to try to come in through my T.V. it will come through the throw that is covering. :|

Hiya Demon Chipmunk's Mum grin2.gif

I think I'll borrow your story to try and keep my kids in line - however I don't think it will work either - I think kids are just programmed to produce mess!

Great story BTW original.gif

There are dozens of actions that supposedly lets the devil in. I once heard that if you blow smoke into an upside down glass, and then place it on a glass table it would let the devil in your house. I never tried it, because I don't have a glass table, but I'm sure it's nonsense tongue.gif

I've never felt comfortable conceptualizing OCD as a "mental illness," for the simple reason that some of the world's sanest people suffer from that condition.

Over the years I've met with and counselled surgeons, registered nurses, public school teachers, licensed social workers and active-duty police officers with OCD. "Mentally ill" police officers don't get hired.
