I've heard a lot of rumors and stories that drowning is actually a painless death, because your body releases all these chemicals to your brain and it feels like your high when your about to die. Lol has anyone else heard this? What do you guys think?
EmpressStarXVII
I extremely doubt it is a painless death.

Does anyone know for sure? Like is their some research or study done explaining drowning? I tried to search for some, but I couldn't find any.

Well i dont know if theres any research done . but i have never known a person who has almost died drowning say they wish to do it again . so that speaks for itself really

Surly you have held your breath before? Even past the point that you knew you needed to breathe? Now imagine trying to do that but knowing you can't inhale and you start to panic and go into shock. There is nothing painless about that. It's all hollywood to think otherwise if you ask me.

One myth about drowning that survives to this day is that it is a painless, almost pleasant way to die. Survivors testify otherwise:

"...When the cramp hit me, I sank to the bottom of the lake 12 feet down, in a doubled-up position. Compounding the wracking pain in my trunk was a mounting choking sensation. (Try holding your mouth and nose after taking a deep breath. Hold your breath until it becomes unbearable; then try holding it a few seconds past the unbearable point. It's a horrible sensation and would give you a dim idea of just one aspect of how it feels to drown.) The pressure of the water caused a stabbing pain in my eyes and ears... try to keep your head when water begins to seep into your already tortured lungs and your body is a mass of pain and you know you are dying... I remember that I screamed down there against a solid wall of water—I remember that I threshed and bobbed, but only succeeded in burrowing my head into the slime of the lake floor...."

Drowning is probably the worst death scenerio.

Your lungs were not made to squeeze oxygen from your lungs, as such your blood does not recieve any life-giving oxygen. Consequently, you have too much carbon-dioxide in your blood which serves to poisen your heart, which in effect will stop beating.

When water gets into your larynx, the natural reaction is to swallow, the more water you take in, the heavier you become and the harder it is to keep your head above the surface.

drowning almost like burn to death. only its from inside. i almost drowned many times, and it feels like burning inside your lungs when the water fill in.

i think my highschool teacher hate me

I think it depends on what you're drowning in.

For example drowning in a vat of scotch would be painful (I was watching Superbad and about to take a gulp from my glass when Evan pushed Seth and the cop car hit him...spent 6 minutes coughing uncontrollably and my lungs and chest stung like a b**** for a day afterwards).

Water I'm assuming wouldn't be as bad...but chlorine would be bad.

I think drowning in syrup wouldn't be too painful...
Lotus Flower
I have never drowned and then been brought back to life, however, I have always envisioned it as being very painful and definitely not painless.

Funnily enough, this is one thing that can be researched by collecting information from those that did drown but were then brought back.

i wouldn't say it's totaly painless. surely it's going to be painful before you pass out. the feeling of your lungs about to explode. we've all been dunked and held under the water by some bully or some of are dumb friends or big brothers or what ever. it's not a good feeling after a few moments and you start really needing air. but hell, drowning is one way i'd choose to go out if it had to be violent, right under bullet to the head.....beats getting beat to death with a bat or stabbed to death.
Regency
I would think that when your body realises you're drowing, your adrenal glad would dump a load of adrenaline into your system and you would panic. Not a nice way to go.

Sporkling
i think its just as painful as having knifes into you
Legatus Legionis
as the other have already commented. I assume that drowning is a torture. not painless at all. painless when your already dead.
MoonPrincess
I think I've almost drowned. Stupid floaty things. My life would have ended in North Carolina. >>

The thought of how painful it would or wouldn't be doesn't concern me. The thought of the sheer panic and terror I would be going through does concern me though...thats probably one of my biggest fears death by drowning or burning...UGH...makes me shudder thinking about it.

Me too. Both of them would be pure torture.....and it wouldnt be instant death either ( which makes it even worse ) Id much rather die falling several stories, or a bullet to the head ( at least it would be instant ) no one wants to suffer sad.gif

That just increased my fear of drowning tenfold, which was already pretty high to begin with. At least I am an excellent swimmer, kind of ironic how I love swimming and yet my greatest fear is drowning...

It might be painless, if you don't try to fight it. If you intake the water and let it fill your lungs, then there shouldn't be any cramping or struggle to survive. You would just wait for oxygen levels to run low and then you'd die. I don't know if gagging reflexes would keep it from being this easy or not.

the struggle to fight is from fear but there is no pain compaired to others,

Marines have water training called the 'rite of passage' where

the fear of drowning is removed because there was no pain

I don't know why thinking of burning doesn't give me that terrible feeling I get when I think of drowning. I can't even think of drowning without my heart starting to beat fast, ughh...
Tairon
Ive read that its extremely painful because the sudden rush of water entering your lungs causes them to tear on the insides. Not something i would like to experience.

EDIT: Lack of oxygen sucks because your own body forces you to breath very rapidly and that in itself is a horrible experience and you can get brain damage. I was bored one day so..... yeah.
stevewinn
I always thought you didnt drown by water filling your lungs, i always thought when you start drowning your body triggers a reaction in the muscels in your neck near your wind pipe which close the entrance to your lungs to stop you inhaling water and thats what kills you the lack of oxygen and then once your brown bread the muscels relax and thats when the water fills the lungs,
