Full Version: Discrepancy with time - not mine!

Okay, I have to make it clear before I relate this story that it did NOT happen to me, but it DID happen to a close family member who is not prone to lying or exaggeration. It has mystified her to say the least.

She is around her boyfriend's house, it is 3.30am, the boyfriend lays on the bed and they stick a DVD on. She then decides she want to go to the loo, she pauses the DVD and off she trots.

Coming back, she sits down on the bed, cross-legged.

This is where a massive discrepancy arises. She blinks, suddenly it is no longer 3.30am but 5.30am, she is sitting in the same position, the DVD is still paused. Looking around she now notices that her boyfriend is sound asleep - whereas before she went to the loo, he was wide awake.

Misreading the time is not a possibility as they started to watch the DVD when they came in from a night out which was shortly after 3am.

The thing that interested me about this whole story was when she told me was that the DVD was still paused, two hours later - but as far as I am aware, does a DVD on pause not "unpause" itself if left for longer than, say, five minutes? Or can it indeed stay paused for however long you might leave it?

I have to also make it clear that because I know this person very, very well, I do believe exactly what they are telling me. It mystifies me as I have had discrepancies of a similar nature, God knows what it is doing to her.

She is going to ask him what exactly happened when she came back from the loo and sat back down within the next couple of days - did he see her fall asleep etc etc.

It's the DVD bit that gets me........

Interesting experience she had Lotus!

My DVD player leaves a DVD on pause permanently (as far as I can tell), however I have found that if I leave it on pause for too long the DVD will start from the beginning again when I press 'Resume' so I'm assuming it auto-stops after a set time. There is no noticeable difference between this [auto-stop] and how it appears in pause - the DVD player stops showing the DVD images when I press the pause button - it is not 'freeze-frame'.

It's probable, in my opinion, that she fell asleep and the DVD timed out (auto-stopped).

Very interesting indeed Lotus. My DVD player remains paused for as long as it's paused and picks up from where it was paused, no matter if it were an hour of 10 later. I can't wait to hear some followup to some of her questions. I've had similar things happen to me so I can totally believe you and the situation ... maybe she fell asleep on the loo lol.

Ahh thanks you two! I wasn't sure about a DVD being able to stay on pause for so long, but I will let her know this.

Regarding falling-asleep, that was my first thought too. How she could do this still sitting up is another question, but I am sure it would be possible. The other thing I need to ask her is if the clock she saw was a digital one or a normal "hand" clock - because that could be quite important too.

I too am interested in the follow-up questions and will definitely post back when I hear thumbsup.gif

This story needs to be collaborated with the boyfriends side of the story.

I've sort of had something like this happen to me. I think it may be caused by sleep deprivation.

I was at work and from my perspective the same thing happened to me and I seemingly lossed like fifteen minutes of time. I had bin operating without sleep for like two straight days, hadn't eaten much of anything, had bronchitis, and was running purely off red bulls. I kind of blanked out for that fifteen minutes and when 'awoke' I was an in entirely different place. Basically I was doing my work for that fifteen minutes as normal but just don't remember it and guess I did it in a half sleep state.

Yes, that was what I told her. To get his side as to what she "appeared" to be doing when she sat back down after coming back from the loo. I did tell her to ask him within the next day or two though, otherwise he would just forget I should imagine and she will never find out.

(If she forgets to ask him, I am gonna lynch her!) laugh.gif
