The djed, or tet, is an icon which dates back before dynastic Egypt. It apparently
had great religious significance throughout ancient Egypt. It has been thought to
represent the backbone of Osiris and I don't believe this is very far off.

The pillar is depicted as a cylindrical shape which flares at the bottom. On early de-
pictions there are cut-outs on this flare so the bottom is not round in cross section.
This cylinder widens slightly toward the top and there are four disc shapes near the
top. Djed means stability or enduring in Ancient Egyptian.

In legend Osiris died twice. Once he was found in a tree after having drowned in
the Nile. It is this part of the legend that gives the clue about what the djed was.

People are often told to "put your back into it" when doing heavy work. Where
Osiris is a cold water geyser he needed the djed to "put His back into it".

This geyser was near the top of the hill so walls were built around it and created The
Lake of the Jackal. But now the mouth (eye) of the geyser was under water and
this water interfered with it. A hollowed tree trunk was inverted over it and was held
in place slight above. When the water blew out it would go up this "djed" and spray
out the top. In order to maintain a constant height a throttle was devised at the top
which was operated by the king, god, or a chosen representative with a tool called
the "was sceptor".

The lakes formed and even the watercourses fed by them would have huge amount
of algae due to the heat and the high CO2 content of the water. There would also be
great need for organic material to fertilize the sandy soil which they were farming.
These problems were overcome by the introduction of fish species which could sur-
vive high CO2 content. These fish would die at the end of the wet season and ferti-
lize the soil and would keep the algae down and the water fresh during the inundation.

The myth says that these species of fish ate Osiris' phallus so they were not considered
food even into much more modern times.

Here's a little 2 1/2 minute video on UTube of a djed pillar

It is. I haven't been able to get information on this but according to some sources
these geysers are known to spray to 200' and run nearly continuously. I believe
Osiris was Closer to the vicinity of 75' and ran nearly continuously only during the
inundation. By the time the pyramid was built it was beginning to fail and the main
geyser just to the north actually failed completely. They tunneled through existing
structure to the ancient eye of Horus to complete construction.

A cold water geyser in Germany sprays a very tight stream to nearly 200' and nearly
vertical. The water falls from it over it's entire lenght so that from a distance it looks
very much like a sword.

The geysers sure are beautiful and fun to watch! And the story about the djed is vey interesting, thanks for sharing it!

Utterance 298.

442a. To say: Rē‘ dawns, his uraeus on his head,

442b. against this serpent, which is come out of the earth, (and) which is under the fingers of N.

442c. He (N.) cuts off thy head with this knife, which was in the hand of the mȝfd.t-lynx, [which lives in the house of life];

443a. he draws, (the teeth) which are upon (in) thy mouth; he saps thy poison

443b. with those four strings, which were in the service of the sandals of Osiris.

443c. Serpent (beast), lie down; bull, glide away.

I believe this utterance gives some insight into the workings of
the djed throttle. The "strings" or ropes operate sets of teeth
which adjust the sandals upon which Osiris stands.

The CO2 is more greatly dissipated at no throttle. (full choke)

The serpent lies down the rumbling fades.

The Great Pyramid appears to be the "house of life" in some of
the other utterances.

Perhaps a djed pillar taken in a vacuum hasn't much meaning
but when you add in the "yeast gas" that is forever falling from
Osiris and his varying odors he's pretty damn busy for a dead
man. Why should people fear his odor and refer to his "evil com-
ing" if not for the fact they could be overcome and killed by his
efflux? Why would tightening his sandals or adding natron
cause a mummy, man, or God to sweat? Why is Osiris always
being encouraged to stand and why would adding natron help?

I think people have to answer these questions. They need to
explain why efflux should figure so prominently in the record.
I need to hear an explanation for why the pyramid texts come
to life if you understand the djed pillar.
cladking
A very large part of what we know about the pyramid
builders comes from the Pyramid Texts. Does it seem
odd only to me that most of these mention sweat, efflux,
odor, water, "yeast gas", and even water springing from
the ground?

Can this really be coincidence?

utt 27.

19b. To say: Osiris N., take the eye of Horus, equip thyself with its odour.

This is the entire utterance but it may as well say

19c So that thou can rise as an imperishable star, like Shu, like Tefnut.

19d Take to thyself this libation; two pellets of natron.

Hell, I think I could write this stuff.

Once we can get this established then I can tell you who and what the Sphinx is so let's get moving here.

Utterance 32.

22a. This is thy cool water, Osiris; this is thy cool water, O N., which went forth from thy son, which went forth from Horus.

22b. I have come; I have brought to thee the eye of Horus, that thy heart may be refreshed by it. I have brought it to thee. It is under thy soles.

23a. Take to thyself the efflux (sweat), which goes forth from thee; thy heart shall not be weary thereby.

23b. To say four times, when thou goest forth justified: Libation; two pellets of natron.

What more can I say?

"under thy sole" is the eye of the geyser. The sole is the djed.

Utterance 33.

24a. To say: Osiris N., take to thyself this thy libation, which is offered to thee by Horus,

24b. in thy name of "He who is come from the Cataract"; take to thyself the efflux (sweat) which goes forth from thee.

24c. Horus has made me assemble for thee the gods from every place to which thou goest.

24d. Horus has made me count (for) thee the children of Horus even to the place where thou wast drowned.

25a. Osiris N., take to thyself thy natron, that thou mayest be divine.

25b. Nut has made thee to be as a god to thine enemy (or, in spite of thee) in thy name of "god."

25c. Ḥrnp.wi recognizes thee, for thou art made young in thy name of "Fresh water."

I could go on indefinitely. The phrase "He who is come from the cataract", I am told, is better translated as "He who comes from the cool watery region".

451a. Behold, N. brings to thee thy great left eye as healer.

451b. Take it, the intact (one), to thyself from N.; its water is in it, being intact;

451c. its blood is in it, being intact; its breath is in it, being intact.

This is fascinating. The Eye of Horus is said to be OK because "its breath is in it". Surely the Egyptians didn't believe that our eyes needed to breathe.

This one's more telling perhaps, utt 310:

494a. bring this (boat) to N. Which boat shall I bring to thee, O N.?

494b. Bring to N. that which flies up and alights.

How many boats "fly up and alight"? The lifting sled is apparently thought of as a boat at least in this "prayer".

I should add that this might apply mostly to the sled used primarily
for lifting men and supplies to the top of the unfinished pyramid. This
sled would be very finely tuned and very carefully operated. It should
be the western secondary lifter.

445a. To say: O Hrti of Nsȝ.t, ferryman of the ’Iḳh.t-boat, made by Khnum,

445b. bring this (boat) to N. N. is Seker of R-Śtȝ.w.

445c. N. is on the way to the place of Seker, chief of Pdw-š.

445d. It is our brother who is bringing this (boat) for these bridge-girderers (?) of the desert.

Hmmm.

Some guy operates a boat made by the God of craftsmanship.

This boat needs to be at Giza.

The king is on the way.

The boat is being brought for the bridge girderers of the desert.

The only bridge girders in the early bronze age would be wood. Relatively
few bridges would be needed on even heavily traveled roads in the desert.
Those building such bridges would have no need for a boat.

Perhaps the layers of the pyramid are seen as a bridge for the king to rise
to heaven and the "boat" is being brought to the pyramid builders. Perhaps
this boat is actually the "ascender" or lifter on the south side or a counterweight
for the north side.

This utterance is to charm the new ascender to assure that it performs to the
standards expected. For these used to lift men it is critical to have a smooth
stable operation.

It appears the name of the boat might have the same root as the word for "gas".
Considering that this is the magic which drives Osiris and allows the "bridge" to
be built, this doesn't seem much of a stretch.

Magic flows through the djed when Osiris stands in it and a bridge is constucted
for the king using a boat made by Khnum.

Horus circulates behind his eye.

This is one remarkable eye. wink2.gif

So - - - - - - - are they flying, or floating or going up in an elevator?

The ride would feel a little like an elevator because it accelerates to a constant
speed and then and then slows near the proper "floor". There are differences
since it's not going straight up and it's going to end up at a 52 degree angle to
when it started. This might be mitigated by loading on a short ramp so you're
facing upward at a little angle. You'd need a bar to hold on to when you "alight".
Acceleration would be drawn out since it would take a while to achieve terminal
velocity. Fine tuning of "alighting" could be achieved in numerous ways. Danger
isn't really extreme so long as the rope doesn't break. Certainly a rough ride
could break some bones if care wasn't taken. There was probably a fairly well
made path for both of the secondary lifters to reduce friction and allow it to oper-
ate at lower speeds. It's obvious from damage to the pyramid that the primary
had very high friction and had to operate at high speed. Since it was just stone
flying up it didn't matter if they overshot and the stones went flying or undershot
and they fell back down. Men would stand clear during lifts. As soon as the land-
ing area was clear they'd already have the counterweight reset and ready for the
next lift.

I would suggest that "flying up and alighting" really isn't too far off. "pulled up
to a higher stationary position" would be the most scientifically accurate means
of saying it.

What??

Thank you. I was starting to think this thread was busted or something.

It seems a lot of people are dismissing my theory simply on the basis of
the fact that it is absurd. Perhaps no one recognizes this absurdity more
keenly than I And it will be a sort of embarrassment whether I'm proven
right or wrong.

Nature is absurd so why shouldn't the activity of man from the dawn of
recorded history be absurd, the evidence lost, and the questions not an-
swered until the dawn of the internet age?

I believe the physical and cultural evidence says that the Egyptians had
a source of water pressure at Giza. This was in actuality a vast cold wat-
er geyser field from Giza to the Fayuum. When man first came upon this
the water mostly just bubbled up through the ground. This caused an ex-
plosion of plant and animal life an was an excellent place to live. Over
thousands of years he learned to drill down to the vast caverns under Giza
and it resulted in the explosive cold water geysers. These can run nearly
continuously and spray huge amounts of water.

They used this water for irrigation by building walls around the geyser
called Osiris but the contained lake served to smother the water coming
up. The purpose of the djed was to place over the eye of the geyser so
that it could still spray to great heights.

As time passed they used this water to build the pyramids. They collected
it near its apex and filled huge counterweights with it which were attached
to sleds on the other side of the pyramid which were full of stones to lift.
When the counterweight was heavy enough, it fell down the side of the pyr-
amid and lifted up the stones. These lifting sleds were referred to as ascen-
ders and they were the boats made by Khnum which would fly up and alight
on top of the unfinished pyramid. These were the "boats" brought to the
"bridge girderers of the desert". They were building a bridge for the dead
king to climb to heaven.

As absurd as this idea is, the simple fact is that it does explain the known
evidence and is consistent with the Pyramid Texts. One might ask how the
knowledge was lost but this isn't the most absurd part of the theory. There
were repeated upheavals to the people and the culture. Very few of any of
the papyri recording this information have survived. Much of this information
would have been a military secret back in the days of construction so they
certainly wouldn't be carving the details in stone. Then came the capper; the
language and writing were so dramatically changed that the old texts were
not translatable at all until the 19th century. At this time they had little of the
scientific knowledge or even the knowledge of the artefacts on which to form
theories. Key words were simply not translatable and when they finally were
translated in the 1970's they were translated improperly.

Some of the geological information which would lead one to suspect geysers
wasn't available until after the dissolution of the Soviet state. The drilling in-
formation for the Aswan High Dam was considered a military secret so was not
widely disseminated even in Russia.

Despite the absurdity I'm becoming convinced.

16 months I've been working on this thing and already the
Egyptian language is being rewritten by Microsoft. For no
discernable reason they are changing the appearance of
many of the way the heiroglyphs appear in English. Perhaps
the real puzzle is how we've learned anything at all about
even the more recent past.

Language gets very little respect. Most users treat it very
carelessly and are often changing vernacular, pronunciation,
grammar, and meanings. The name of the Chinese capital
has changed four or five times just in my lifetime.

So, to make sure I am understanding what you are saying...

There was a natural spring or something like it, and the AE dug out a little lake around it. Understandable. Then the lake actually impeded the spring, so they built a tubular pillar to fit in the spring (which by now is a geyser) to keep the water flowing at a good pressure. Okay. Then they used counterweight boats filled with this water to lift the giant stones to build the pyramids. Do I have it?

I don't know enough about AE to say you are wrong. To tell you the truth I am not even sure I know what the accepted theory is now on how the pyramids were built. Your idea seems plausible, but I don't have all the facts. I will have to research a little bit. If it is true, is it really that absurd or extraordinary to think that ancient men harness waterpower?

Yes. That's it exactly.

Man's ability to do this with ancient technology isn't absurd. It's not something
most modern men would think of because we have so many other and easier
ways of doing almost everything. We wouldn't want to build an enormous struc-
ture out of stone and cold water geysers are an unusual event. Man is no longer
drawn to supplies of fresh water because we create huge dams and can feed the
water almost anywhere. Ropes are used primarily to hold two things together
like a load on a truck. Even food itself is now almost an ancillary product. Where
it once determined populations and most human activity, now only 1% of the pop-
ulation grows food for the rest of us.

Primitive technology is very limiting on many levels but ancient man was exceed-
ingly knowledgeable since it still required a great deal of knowledge to work with-
out chemical plants and steel mills. Obviously they were entirely capable of har-
nessing such energy if it existed.

There are two things that I always come back to in looking at this question; they
appear to have had water at Giza and this is simply impossible without some kind
of unusual motive force since it is uphill from the Nile, and they refer to Osiris as
the Lord of the caverns and had boats which flew up and alighted.

Later I'll add another utterance which seems to lament the ending of the age of
the geysers.

Traditional explanations for construction of these usually involve men dragging
stones up ramps. This seems very improbable because the quarry is so close to
the pyramid that there's no room for ramps. There are several theories which
can't be ruled out but all seem to suffer from one fatal flaw; there isn't enough
room to bring the manpower to bear. There are those who would argue these
points. Unfortunately traditionalists don't seem to believe that how they were con-
structed is very important and there is very little or no research being carried on
to determine it. To some extent many also believe the question has been answer-
ed by ramps so research is superfluous.

It's ironic that if this more crackpot theory is correct then most of the questions
about the ancients and their religion will be answered as well. It would even pro-
vide remarkable insights into the nature of man, thought, and his gods. Not least
of these insights might be our relationship with nature and technology.

Utterance 259.

312a. To say: N. is Osiris in a dust-storm.
3112b. The abomination of N. is the earth; he has, not entered into Geb,
312c. that N. might perish; nor has he slept in his house on earth,
312d. that the bones of N. might be broken. His wounds are effaced;
312e. N. has purified himself with the eye of Horus; his wound is effaced by the two mourners of Osiris;
312f. N. has let the running (of his wound) flow to the ground at Ḳuṣ.
313a. It is the sister of N., the lady P, who wept for him.
313b. The two nurses (or, attendants), who wept for Osiris, wept for him.
313c. N. is on his way to heaven; N. is on his way to heaven, with Shu and Rē‘.
313d. N. is not hindered; there is no one who hinders him.
313e. N. is upon his feet, the eldest of the gods.
313f. N. has no session in the divine court.
...

There's more to this utterance but the tone is the same and I don't have a good handle on all the meaning.

Note that this refers to Osiris in a dust storm not a sandstorm!! There could be
a dust storm in the valley only under the most extreme conditions.

Note also that Osiris does not figure as an integral part of this charm as he does
in the vast majority of them. N is Osiris in a dust storm refers to the dead king
not Osiris. Just as a dead king is mourned and powerless to stop the soil from
blowing away so is Osiris. And the king has to be satisfied with purifying himself
in the eye. Osiris's mourners weep for the king as he climbs to heaven and is not
given to Geb the Earth.

The absence of Osiris is very telling. Each of these last four lines would normally
start with "Osiris," to connote that as the king goes so does Osiris. But "Osiris, N.
has no session in the devine court" because "Osiris is in a duststorm". No doubt
he is laying down on the job. Osiris, Lord of the Caverns, must stand to prevent
a dust storm. "313e. N. is upon his feet, the eldest of the gods", but not Osiris!!!

1970a. Wherewith shall N. be caused to fly?

1970b (N. 758-759). Then let there be brought to thee ------ ḥnw-boat, built by Mw-ḥn,

1970d (N. 759). the south-wind for thy foster-mother, the north-wind for thy nurse.

1971. N. flies; N. alights on the two wings (lit. feathers) of his father, Geb.

I'm less sure of the meaning here since some of these terms don't appear
often enough to get a handle on them. 1970d totally eludes me.

It's interesting that the king would alight on the wings of Geb. Geb is the
Earth and his wings should be a natural or artificial "mountain".
cladking
This post and the previous are a sort of thinking aloud so please bear
with me a little here.

I'm looking at 1970d in a little more detail and might be getting some
understanding of it. Isis is sometimes referred to as Osiris' foster-
mother. When the north wind blows from June to February the inun-
dation is close on its heels. About the third week of July the Nile rises.
Quite possibly Osiris starts rising even earlier. "The nurse" may be the
"mn-canal" or "nurse canal" which is the high level water being fed in-
to the queen's chamber.

The djed feeds the double doors of heaven which feeds the nurse canal.

Here's something from the Book of The Dead which isn't worth its own
thread so will add it here;

Thou art the beneficent Spirit among the spirits. The god of the Celestial Ocean (Nu) draweth from thee his waters. Thou sendest forth the north wind at eventide, and breath from thy nostrils to the satisfaction of thy heart. Thy heart reneweth its youth, thou producest the.... The stars in the celestial heights are obedient unto thee, and the great doors of the sky open themselves before thee. The imperishable stars are under thy supervision, and the stars which never set are thy thrones. The Companies of the Gods praise thee, and the gods of the Tuat (Geyser?) smell the earth in paying homage to thee. Thou art a shining Spirit-Body... Thy fear is set in all the lands by reason of thy perfect love, and they cry out to thy name making it the first of names, and all people make offerings to thee. Thou art the lord who art commemorated in heaven and upon earth. Thou art the beloved of thy mother Nut, the mighty one of valour, who overthrew the Sebau-fiend. Thou didst stand up and smite thine enemy, and set thy fear in thine adversary. Thou dost bring the boundaries of the mountains. Thy heart is fixed, thy legs are set firm. Thou hast made this earth with thy hand, and the waters, and the winds, and the vegetation, and all the cattle, and all the feathered fowl, and all the fish, and all the creeping things, and all the wild animals therof. The desert is the lawful possession of the son of Nut.

"Thou rollest up into the horizon, thou hast set light over the darkness, thou sendest forth air from thy plumes, and thou floodest the Two Lands like the Disk at daybreak. Thy crown penetrateth the height of heaven, thou art the companion of the stars, and the guide of every god. Thou art beneficent in decree and speech, the favoured one of the Great Company of the Gods, and the beloved of the Little Company of the Gods...

This is heavily edited to omit nonrelevant passages but the
order is maintained.

Note especially the second "paragraph. "thou sendest forth
air from thy plumes". This air would blow to the south dur-
ing the inundation covering the two lands as surely as light
at daybreak.

I've enlisted the aid of a new geologist though he's not entirely "onboard" yet.

OK. I have some new stuff but will have to update this thread with some older stuff for it to be understandable.

It is carbon dioxide that drive a cold water geyser. The Egyptians should have had some insights into the nature of these geysers and ttheir cause by the time they failed about 2400 BC or so. It is apparent in the Pyramid Texts that they did indeed know quite a bit about them. They also considered the CO2 to be a powerful magic and they hid 4 fiery red jugs of it at Rosteau according to the coffin texts.

They called CO2 by a two word name that was untranslated by Mercer. I believe it was most probably "yeast gas". Bear in mind that in Egyptian like many modern languages this would be reversed so would appear as "gas (of) yeast". It appears in the texts as "’Iḫ.t-wt.t" or "gas-yeast".

Utterance 690 seems to describe the eruption of a cold water geyser.

2109. The sky trembles, the earth quakes before the god, before N.

2110a. N. [is not enveloped] by the earth;

2110b. ’Iḫ.t-wt.t, thou art not enveloped by the earth.

2110c. Thy fame is by day; thy fear is by night, as a god, lord of f ear.

2110d. Thou commandest the gods like the mighty one, chief of the mighty.

2111. [O] Osiris, the overflow comes, the inundation hastens, Geb groans.

2112a. I have pitied thee with pity; I have smitten him who acted with evil (intent) against thee;

2112b. that thou mayest live, that thou mayest raise thyself up because of thy strength.

2113. O N., [the inundation comes 1, [the overflow hastens], Geb [groans].

2114a. Exult in the divine efflux which is in thee; let thy heart live;

214b. thy divine limbs are in good condition; loosen thy bindings.

2115a. Horus comes to thee, N.; he does for thee that which he did for his father Osiris,

"’Iḫ.t-wt.t" would be the "yeast gas" coming out of solution.

"’Iḫ.t-wt.t", thy fame is by day thy fear is by night. By day this would be a major topic of interest by most educated people. At night the wind often slows when solar heating stops. This would allow possibly deadly concentrations of "yeast gas" to accumulate especially in lower lying areas.

It appears as well in utt 436:

788b. the efflux goes forth from the god, the secretion which comes out of Osiris,

788c. so that thy hands may be washed, so that thine ears may be open.

789a. This power is spiritualized by means of its soul.

789b. Wash thyself for thy ka washes itself. Let thy ka be seated,

789c. that it may eat bread with thee, without ceasing eternally.

790a. Thy going is as a successor of Osiris;

790b. thy face is before thee; thine homage is before thee.

791a. It is agreeable to thy nose on account of the smell of ’Iḫ.t-wt.t;

791b. for thy feet when they hit thy feast (carry thee to thy feast);

791c. for thy teeth, for thy finger-nails when thy bread is broken.

Again this is mentioned with the efflux from Osiris.

From utt 221;

197e. make thou that his ‘bȝ-sceptre be at the head of the living; make thou that his śḫm-sceptre be at the head of the spirits;

197f. make thou that his blade be firm against his enemies.

198a. O ’Inw-Crown, thou has come forth from him as he came forth from thee.

198b. The great ’Iḫ.t has given birth to thee, the ’Iḫ.t-wt.t has adorned thee;

198c. the ’Iḫ.t-wt.t has given birth to thee, the great ’Iḫ.t has adorned thee,

198d. for as for thee, thou art like Horus, who fought in protection of his eye.

"gas" has given birth to thee, the great "yeast gas" has adorned thee. The great "yeast gas" has given birth to the, the great "gas" has adorned thee.

from 664;

1916-1 (N. 719 + 29). O N., great is sleep; it is great to sleep.

1916-2 (N. 709 + 4). This great one sleeps, he sleeps; wake up, raise thyself up.

1916-3 (Nt. 738). Great is thine odour, pleasant to the nose, the odour of ’Iḫ.t-wt.t.

And finally from 576;

1502b. Osiris awakes in peace; he who is in Ndi.t awakes in peace.

1503a. His head is lifted up by Rē‘; his odour is [as] that of the ’Iḫ.t-wt.t-serpent.

1503b. The head of N. also is lifted up by Rē‘; the odour of N. is as that of ’Iḫ.t-wt.t-serpent.

This may be a type of snake that smells something like rising bread or possibly it's just a recognition of its dangerous properties.

Remarkably there was one usage that didn't appear in my
searches that I just stumbled across which ties this thread
together as well as tying together the way the religion and
culture grew.

It is utterance 211;

131a. To say: The abomination of N. is hunger; he does not eat it;

131b. the abomination of N. is thirst; he does not drink it.

131c. It is N. who gives food to those who exist.

131d. His nurse is ’iȝ.t;

131e. it is she who makes his life (through nourishment?); it is she who gave birth to N.

132a. N. was conceived in the night; N. was born in the night.

132b. He belongs, to the Followers of Rē‘, who are before the morning star.

132c. N. was conceived in Nun; he was born in Nun.

132d. He has come; he has brought to you (some) bread of that which he found there.

This clearly states that the dead king/ Osiris has "gas" for a nurse.
It is the gas that makes him live. It is Nun (the primordial waters)
who gave birth to N/ Osiris.

It is yeast gas which drives the geyser and makes N/ Osiris rise. It
is yeast gas which is driven off in the nurse canal and it is yeast gas
pressure which can be controlled by the djed pillar.

From #600;

1659a. Horus has given the gods to thee; he has caused them to ascend to thee, as (reed)-pens,

The Gods appear to ascend to heaven as the capillary action sucks ink up a pen. There's a lot of truly remarkable imagery here.

Utterance 638.

1805a. To say: Osiris N., the gods have bound thy face to thee;

1805b. Horus has given his eye to thee, that thou mayest see [with it].

1806a. Osiris N., Horus has opened thine eye for thee, that thou mayest see with it,

1806b. in its name of "She who opens the ways of god."

The face of Osiris the geyser can be seen only when he stands in the Eye of Horus. ie- during an eruption. Osiris is devine when he stands and can see with the eye of Horus which is bound to his face. The eye, unsurprisingly, is a feminine noun; she opens the ways of Gods.

The faces of mummies are in no way disturbed except to the degree they are distorted to remove the brain tissue. They are normally buried with only their own eyes. In mummification the internal organs are removed and the body dessicated with natron and then wrapped. While means varied over the centuries I'd guess that in no cases are eyes mixed and matched. Note, too, that once Horus gives the eye to Osiris that it becomes his and he can see with it using the face that is suddenly present.

The very next utterance same thing, more detail.

Utterance 639.

1807a. To say [Osiris N.], take the eye of Horus, being alive, that thou mayest see with it.

1807b. Osiris N., thy face is opened by the light.

1807c. Osiris N., thy [face is illuminated] as the earth is illuminated.

1808a. Osiris N., I have given the eye of Horus to thee, as Rē‘ gives it (the light).

1808b. Osiris N., [put the eye] of Horus to thyself, that thou mayest see with it.

1809a. Osiris N., I have opened thine eye that thou mayest see with it.

1809b. Osiris N. [I have given to thee] the ointment.

The geyser is in the light of the sun.

There are various references to ointments, oils, and cosmetics placed in the eye of Horus. There were likely some practical purposes for these but they were likely primarily ceremonial or religious. Natron was added in the nurse canal to remove CO2 (yeast gas).

OK, here's the feed for the djed;

http://www.towers-online.co.uk/pages/shafted9.htm

The mountains north of Lake Kivu were likely the source of the CO2 at Giza. This mountain is acting up again and there are fatalities caused by people getting into poclkets of CO2.

In the Pyramid Texts all the Earth Gods are said to have "evil comings". They are said to be the topic of learned conversation by day and dread by night. This is specifically in reference to the efflux of Osiris (yeast gas). At night the winds slow and gas accumulates. People die.

Everything ties together.

I don't think its absurd at all, it could explain why although they are the highest and oldest pyramids they are the best constructed, in that when the power of the geyser subsided so did the ability to construct such large structures.
Also I have wonderd as to why there is no record of how they were constructed, yet some means of constuction records must exist ? so no theory deserves to be called absurd.
To find the answers we must keep going and not give up.

So come on "cladking" keep posting.

Well, thank you.

There's just not much more in the Pyramid Texts about djed pillars. This word
appears only a single time and Mercer doesn't even translate it. The concept
appears a few more times as "the sole of Osiris" or "the sandals of Osiris" be-
cause it is the djed (or his sandals) in which he stands. My favorite is the refer-
ence from the coffin texts where it is said the djed (sycamore) provides Osiris'
air.

There probably isn't going to be a lot more to add to this thread. Oh, there are
later drawings of a djed (apparently) standing inside a pyramid and such, but
none are extremely convincing.

To me the short video of a djed in operation today at the start of this thread just
says everything you need to know; a geyser eye under water don't blow.

Here's another link for anyone who missed it the first time. Remember it's on
Crystal Geyser and it's half way through this very short clip. You'll have to look
closely to see it and understand its function.

You've done a lot of thinking on this and come to an impressive conclusion.

Since the AE's depicted everything they did pretty much, in pictures, (even if we don't "get" the picture), wouldn't they be showing water of some type when they depicted the Raising of the Djed Pillar?

Good question. It's one I've put some thought into.

Most of these ceremonies didn't begin until after the geysers failed. I believe the
one at Hermokopolis was concurrent but there probably was no geyser in this area.
The real djeds would normally have to be in place before eruptions started in early
July.

I believe that all the djeds attached to pyramids were concealed as was most of the
geyser itself. This activity was in the hidden place.

There is remarkably little of anything from before 2300 BC. While water coming from
a djed is a natural for survival it may have just been something which wasn't depict-
ed by consensus. When people wanted to show this it was just bad magic for it to
look this way so it was depicted as Osiris standing in the djed. No doubt there would
have been manuals, texts, and other more reality based works that would have pro-
bably given some more detailed and accurate depictions. Obviously a text on geyser
building and maintenance should have something along these lines. But no such work
of ANY type survives from so long ago. Even the Pyramid Texts were carved long af-
ter they were written and survive only because they were carved in stone and protec-
ted by pyramids.

When the geysers began failing the people might grow even more superstitious about
what was required for their existence. They might think that they failed because they
had done something wrong or because their gods were depicted wrongly.

It seems within the realm of possibility to me that there might be geysers and no such
record survive. They could be forgotten very quickly. Certainly something was forgot-
ten since there is no record of how they were built.

...And, of course, it would be very dangerous to even approach one of these
if it wasn't "stable" and "enduring". Trying to put sandals on Osiris' feet when
he was standing would be about akin to putting a saddle on a lion.

I have been reading a lot lately about the symbolique of the ancient Egyptians in a book called The Temple of Man by R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz. It is a hard book to read but he talks about the symbols of the ancients and what they really were all about. Initially, I thought the Djed Pillar was not unlike our cell phone towers scattered around the nations, but who knows. According to some who study the Nabta Playa and the ancient Sahara there once was a very advanced race that occupied that area and it was destroyed by a part of the Carolina Bays Event some 12,500 years ago with that projectile hitting about where Lake Chad is situated. It destroyed that once great nation to smithereens and as the survivors treked out of the area, they tried to leave parts of their knowledge at the Playa in the form of Stonehenge-like markers that showed their sophisticated knowledge of the Cosmos. At any rate, they went on to establish the Egyptian culture along with some who trekked from the Indian Ocean area some 12,000 years ago. Their first consolidation was to set up a seat of their knowledge. Some say it was situated near or in the Osirion at Abydos. There humanity could realize their ancient past but no group has seen fit to look for it but rather try to cover it up.

I don't want to start a new thread and this is relevant here so will ask
a little question. First some background.

Bows are mention repeatedly throughout the Pyramid Texts. By reading
them in context some obviously refer to the weapon. A few are related
to the act of bowing. But that leaves about ten references to "bows" that
are translated literally from the Egyptian as "sky arcs". There are also
references to "steps of light" and even a "light scatterer of the sky".

Where I come from these are quite obviously all refering to rainbows. Yet
there is hardly a reference in the PT to rain. Indeed they even speak of
the "nine bows". This is remarkable since there are nine Gods in the ear-
thly ennead.

Doesn't this imply that each God had a rainbow?

It would seem if a God stood in a djed in the desert sunlight it would make
one mighty spectacular rainbow. The secondary rainbow has almost exac-
tly the same angle as the slope of the Great Pyramid. I believe the size of
the dropletts is a factor in this equation.
cladking
Here's a remarkable utterance. It doesn't really mention the djed pillar but I believe it's existence is presupposed as being part of the pyramid enclosure. This enclosure would include the Eye of Horus with the djed on it as well as the upper eye and associated infrastructure such as the winding watercourse. It really seems to show very much that the traditional explanation of what the Gods are is in error. How can Isis stink and Osiris be evil if she knows the words of magic and he is the judge of souls. Are we toi believe that their Gods not only were incestuous but evil and smelly as well? Osiris already had the biggest perspiration problem ever and the Egyptians considered it so important that they buried four jugs of his efflux at Giza. They apparently referred to this "efflux" as I[].t-wt.t or what looks like is probably "yeast gas" (CO2). A little hydrogen sulphide between friends wouldn't be surprising considering this gas is still being emitted by the mountain at Lake Kivu. This smells like rotten eggs and if any were emitted by Isis then she would certainly be "wide of ḥwȝ-.t".

Utterance 534.

1264a. To say by Horus: May Geb make an offering.

The king and Gods are responsible for everything in ancient Egypt. This is build up because there is danger present as there always was in the Land of Horus.

1270c. Let him go to Ddnw-(him whom) they found in (the condition of) quaking;
1270d. at once; let him go to Ḫm.

1271a. If Thot comes in this his evil coming;
1271b. do not open to him thine arms; that which is said to him is his name of "thou hast no mother."
1271c. Let him go; let him be gone to his (?) two ’int.wi; let him go to Buto, to H</u>ri-D</u>ḥwti.

1272a. If Isis comes in this her evil coming;
1272b. do not open to her thine arms; that which is said to her is her name (of) "wide of ḥwȝ-t (evil-smelling)."
1272c. Let her (lit. him) be gone; let her go to the houses of Mȝnw;
1272d. at once; let her go to Ḥ<u>d</u>b.t, to the place where thou hast (she has) been struck.

1273a. If Nephthys comes in this her evil coming;
1273b. that which. is said to her is this her name of "substitute without vulva."
1273c. Go thou to the house of Śerḳet, to the place where thou didst strike thy two ‘nn.twi (thighs?).

These are most of the earthly ennead. They are not suddenly evil. Their efflux though is composed of CO2 and hydrogen sulfide. The CO2 will collect in low lying areas and kill those who enter these areas. Another utterance says the "yeast gas" is a topic of conversation by day and feared by night. When the north wind slows due to cooling at night these pockets of CO2 become much more likely.

1274a. If enemies come with those who are among the elders
1274b. that which is said to them (lit. her) is this their (lit. her) name of Šp-šȝ.w.

The geysers had to be protected against the enemies of the state.

1274c. Go to ---- t</u>w.t.
1275a. If N. comes with his ka;
1275b. the mouth of his gods opens: "(If) he desires to descend to the [underworld, let him descend]
1275c. to the place where there are gods."

The Gods are the duat (D[].t)they exist in the underworld where Osiris rides on the back of Set.

1276a. If N. comes with his ka, open thou thine arms to him;
1276b. the mouth of his gods opens: "(If) he desires to ascend to heaven, let him ascend."
1277a. I am come as judge; may Geb make offerings, and Atum.

The pyramid exist for the ascension of the king on the horizon. The horizon exists on the pyramid. The name of the Great Pyramid in ancient Egypt was "The Horizon of Khufu".

1277b. I consecrate this pyramid, this temple, to N. and to his ka;
1277c. that which this pyramid, this temple, contains is for N. and for his ka;
1277d. pure is this eye (pyramid enclosure) of Horus,
1278a. O may it be pleasing to thee. He who puts his finger against this pyramid, this temple of N. and of his ka;
1278b. he who will put his finger against the house of Horus in ḳbḥ.w,

It is blessed.

1278c. may Nephthys and Isis go against him -------- Geb.

Lost words are likely something like "who would destroy the wing of". The Goddesses are still protecting the pyramid enclosure even while their efflux is hoped to be contained by it.

1279a. His case will be heard by the Ennead,
1279b. he will be without support, his house will be without support;
1279c. he is accursed; he is one who eats his (own) body.

This is simply a curse on those who would do foul to this very important infrastructure.

Also note that in line 1272c Isis is referred to as a him. Horus is often referred to in the feminine. This may well be because the hole through which the geyser arose was a feminine noun while the geyser itself was masculine.

Honey is indeed important to the Ancient Egyptians. They put it on just about every kind of wound or scratch. They used willow bark as aspirin.

One of the last pieces of the puzzle seems to be falling in place
but here's a related question which is applicable here; If Osiris
is the inundation of the Nile then why does the word "Nile" appear
only three or four times in all the Pyramid Texts? If Osiris is the
Nile then why is he "Lord of Caverns"? Why does the efflux of O-
siris smell sweet? The egyptologists would have us believe this
efflux is the drippings of a corpse onto the desert. Who would
describe this smell as sweet?

Some people can smell CO2. It's even mentioned on the MSDS for
CO2. It wouldn't be surprising if this were common among the an-
cient Egyptians.

The CO2 was released in the vicinity of the djed and steps were tak-
en to cause more to off-gas in the "canals" above. This gas can be
deadly even in low concentrations with even 1% having an effect on
health. It kills by asphyxiation long before it kills by suffocation. The
Gods had "evil comings" and Isis stank.

This was a country strung out along a wide stretch of the Nile yet the
river hardly gets a mention in the earliest writings. They used the river
for almost everything from transportation to water for growing crops.
Their very lives depended on the flooding each year to be not too lit-
tle and not too much, but this hardly gets a mention in their "Bible".
This is not consistent with the traditional explanations of their history,
the Pyramid Texts, and the physical evidence.

1486a. Assemble those who dwell in Nun; collect those who are among the bows.
1486b. Thy forehead is upon thine arm (in mourning) for Osiris, O Great Mooring-post,

This utterance appears to concern Osiris' djed and implies Osiris
is the tallest geyser.
Nun is the primaval waters and the bows are
the rainbows which equip each of the gods.

The "forehead" of the djed is the choke at the top and the arm is
the wAs sceptor which adjusts it. If there's truly "mourning" for
Osiris it's probably only because the pressure has dropped too low
to be useful.

"Great mooring post" is the 4th term for the djed and probably re-
fers only to Osiris' djed.

edited to add; It's the first line I've been grappling with but it looks like
I've been overthinking it. Rather than meaning that Osiris is the tallest
geyser it appears that they simply mean the the geyser stands in the Eye
of Horus which is under the djed. This isn't too far from the scientific ex-
planation either since without the sides of the eye the geyser can't stand.

The djed is independent of Osiris' ability to stand and the God does stand
under it. Please just ignore the underlined sentence. Nothing has been

I just refound this one. It mostly eludes me.

Here's another one that's very telling;

This entire utterance is simply fascinating. Note that Horus travels the land in his two white sandals. Sandals are one of the names for the djed. Here's a picture of the tree of life also known as the Egyptian sycamore. Note it is white and it is the tree of which a djed is made.
