AUGUSTA, Ga. - A 22-year-old woman fatally stabbed her two young children in a convenience store bathroom Thursday, police said.

A worker at Food Mart told police she saw Jeanette Michelle Hawes enter the restroom Thursday afternoon with the two children, a boy and girl, and then heard a scream, Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength said.

The worker called 911, and when deputies arrived they forced the door open and found Hawes on the floor, holding a steak knife and covered in the children's blood, Strength said.

Jordon Hawes, 1, and Shakayla Hawes, 3, were pronounced dead upon arrival at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital. Both died of stab wounds to the chest, Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen said.

Hawes was charged with two counts of murder and with possession of a knife during the commission of a crime. She was being held at the Richmond County jail.

Jail officials said they did not know whether Hawes had an attorney. A message seeking comment left late Thursday at the Richmond County Sheriff's Office wasn't immediately returned.

Store clerk Amanda Thomas said Hawes was a regular customer.

"Michelle went to the bathroom, and I heard the children crying," Thomas told WAGT-TV.

A moment later, Thomas said, "I heard a different sound that didn't sound right. I went back there to get the door opened and I couldn't get it opened and I didn't hear anything."



ya know - of all the crazy things that go on in this world of ours. nothing boggles my mind as much as a parent killing their own children. i mean, WTF???

Oh s**t....I swore I wasn't going to read this and I did....I can't imagine how distraught a parent can be to do this....more and more children are becoming victims, it's all that we seem to read about lately, making my head spin with images....so very very sad..

Some lady in Plano, Texas (my neck of the woods) threw her 2 month old infant off a two story balcony yesterday. The child didn't die but nonetheless....


....and some of you people don't think there should be a death penalty. It is simple logic...kill the evil people and the world will be less evil.

In cases like this I'm all for the death penalty....Unfortunately, as Pandora said, most of the tiimes lawyers go for the insanity pleas...makes me sick...

Here in Germany recently a couple let their poor little 5 year old daughter starve to death.
Their dogs were well fed and healthy though.
They used to carry their dogs 4 flights of stairs while the little girl had to crawl up .
She only weighed 14 lbs. or 7 kilogram.

I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old also, I have been stressed before, but I have NEVER even imagined killing my own children. What kind of person is she? I agree with everyone else, it sucks that she will probably get off on an insanity plee. Sho should be put to death. Poor children, hopefully they are in a better place now.

Crazy, delusional lady will probably be locked up in a mental institution for the rest of her days. Pity she won't get the death penalty; it would put her out of her misery.

What is this world coming to?? There are far too many stories like this in the news lately. I don't understand how this moms can do these things to thier babies. I know these were not infants but to mothers no matter what age your kids are they are always your babies. I know having kids is not easy.........hell it is damn hard. One on drugs. Very bad drugs. There was a guy here who shot his 1 year old son and girlfriend. Killing the girlfriend and crippling the little boy for life. The grandmother comes to my friend's greenhouse all the time in a "shell shock daze" to buy stuff for the girls grave and she will never mentally recover. I feel so bad when I talk to the poor woman.

I will never understand people like this. If she didnt want her children she should have taken them to a police officer and said please take them. Those poor little babies how can someone be so evil? I have a house full of babies and I would have taken those also to raise with mine. People that take a childs life should not be allowed to pled insanity regardless if they are or not. I was not going to post on this thread but I could not restrain myself. I have a .44mag that will cure what ails this, person?, Andrea Yates comes to mind also, Susan Smith and so on. .44 mag cartridges are cheap in comparison to the cost of housing losers like this. I am the father of 5 boys and cannot understand what drives this behavior but on the other hand I believe my cure is a long term solution. If you off them they cannot reproduce and thus cannot kill their kids...

Oh gosh. I dont know what's more sad in the end though... this ladies crime, or everyone wanting to kill her for it without even knowning anything about her at all. You guys are so typical. So this lady could've been a wonderful mother who just went crazy in that instant of time... and you's tend to react quite heartless and want to give her a bullet for it.
