DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS
the film is based on an old french play. It follows the story of a man who is down and out in beverly hills. (because is old french based this suggests the values of the story are all encompassing because the movie has been updated to a modern US version)
he does not have much physical attachement (connection), and he thinks he is somewhat 1337 because of this (and in his own way, he is) - he meets up with a family who are heavily physically immersed (somewhat dsyfunctional) and he helps them out in his own strange way (he is like a christ figure in the movie) - it is clever because in the end, he realises why it is important to connect to things, so he learns from the family also.
in the beginning of the film, the opening credits, you see him as a homeless man, pushing a trolley of belongings with a small dog in it. this is important because this is a [reversed?] tarot symbol of the chariot. the dog is somewhat his avatar, and it 'leads the way' (it sits in the front of the chariot) it is a symbol (as is the chariot) for how he (one) moves in life.. his somewhat slanted view at this point, is reflected in the single dog, this represents his male side i would think (because his 'chariot' does not have both polarities present - it shows how he is dysfunctional, even though he is the 'christ like' figure of the story)
he comes to meet a the family.. they are completely materialstic. the husband pursues career, the wife overlooked, unexpressed and unfulfilled and the son, well.. a typical rebellious son i suppose.. the perfect dysfunctional metaphor family..
i will have to watch the movie again to be able to type a blow by blow account, because i just do this from memory and out of boredom.. but here are the salient points.. hopefully you know the movie well enough then?
the christ-like figure (richard dreyfuss i think) towards the start of the movie, is told by police something like "move along - you don't belong here" IIRC he even turns around to them and says "that's a really crap thing to say to somebody" ..he is having a bad day at this point, and something seems to snap because of this.. he wanders, dejected.. to the swimming pool of the rich familys house.. (and with the words echoing in his head "YOU DON'T BELONG HERE") he just kind of catatonically falls into the pool. the rich family save him.. and the fun begins..
the father of the household, is having an affair with the maid - the family also has a dog - again this is important: there is a scene where the father is sneaking off to meet up with the maid, but the family dog (another avatar) is barking at him and giving him away - the words he says are remarkable, and really do justice to the intelligence of the writers, he picks up a squeak toy and throws it, saying to the dog "go get it, putz" -- but he is talking about himself, and he is the putz about to 'go get it' if you know what i mean
the christ-like figure has interactions with them all on personal levels - from his 'street person' background he is able to impart specific knowledge the rich family each need to hear in their own ways.. the dealing with the wife is a bit tacky, but i suppose conveys the message well enough, he at first tries a type of shiatsu massage on her to 'loosen her up and flush out some Karma' - but it's been so long since somebody paid attention to her on this level, the connection ends up going deeper than that, if you get my drift..
he takes the father of the house out for a 'night on the beach' with his homeless friends, this allows the father to kind of 'live a little' and express his inner yearnings which have been smothered by pursuit of a materialstic life, (flushes out some karma for him)
because of this, the husband and wife start to argue, which leads to a reconciliation yada yada everyone is happy by the end of the movie..
he also manages to help the son find an identity, but due to controversial subject matter there i won't go into that..
anyway if interested i will hire the movie out and watch it again and fill in the blanks. but the reference to the tarot card at start and 'go get it putz' i wonder if many people get this? movies are working on deep levels.. and borrowing from rich traditions.. it was very satisfying for me when i came to this understanding of the movie (sorry for leaving parts out) it'd be great if this topic here would spark a few peoples interest and we can get some other movie analysis going on also?
i can also do the movie poltergeist 1, but i will watch it again first and make notes then comes back and hopefully interest somebody.. thanks for your time.. please please analyse a movie here.. i love this stuff
