I would give my kids ?...the toys are tainted...buy a puppy for the whole family..wanna bet theres a rash of brain cancer soon?>..

Yes, you should avoid not only toys, but ALL chinese made products if at all possible.

but not just because of lead. You should avoid chinese goods because they are the fastest emerging economy, and our superpower rival. And they hold a tremendous amount of our debt, and they don't buy as much of our stuff as we do theirs.

It's sad that it takes something like the possibility of poisoning their kids to wise up and do the right thing. Too bad only a handfull of us care about things like selling the chinese our country and increasing our debt to them, just to save a few cents at WalMart.

MoonPrincess
My mom is going China free this holiday season. I've decided to buy my two nieces teddy bears. I was going to get something I didn't know what. Then I decided on teddy bears.

I think we should ban Chinese products until this problem is solved. Even my mom & stepdad agrees with me.

Edit: Kids are looking for toys this Christmas. Some will be extremely disspointed when they don't get their toys.

What problem? The lead? The poison in pet food?

Or do you meant the trade deficit and mounting debt to China?

MoonPrincess
The lead poisioning problem.

My mom went to Sam's Club & checked where the product came from. If it came from China, she put it back. Mom's not taking any chances.

So what if they become a rival superpower? How many wars have they jumped into or started in the past century? Less than the US. I doubt they're going to attack the US.

Once they are open in more markets, and they don't need us to buy their crap, they just might want the money we owe them. And as we continue to cripple our own economy, we won't be able to pay. have fun learning Mandarin.

and even if they never attack the US, they are using the money we send them for their junk to buy more oil, driving up the world market price, and building more industry without an EPA like agency to regulate their polution.

QUOTE

Tibettans might have a few ideas about that. And the South Koreans. And the Russians. But that's neither here or there. It's not a question of "war."

It's a VERY BAD IDEA to keep sending money to another country that holds so much of our debt. It will drive the dollar down, reduce our credit rating, and just create problems. When china matures as a superpower (on our dollars, partially) they'll have even more muscle to buy resources that we need...like oil and raw materials.

It's not about all out war, it's economic survival as well. And consider this...not much is made here anymore. We've already pissed off most of the planet, even europe. What happens if there's a war against us, and they don't side with us this time? Where are we going to get our stuff made? American cars brands are sending manufacturing to mexico and overseas. We don't make much of anything. How are we going to retool factories for war when there aren't really many factories left to retool?

Sending money to china weakens us. all that to save a few bucks on crap you don't need anyway.

How are they going to do that? Send barbie dolls with lead paint on them and force every american to put them in their mouth for long enough to ingest a lethal amount?

The US doesn't import much food from China, do they?

I wasn't aware toys made in China were being recalled because of lead content. I've just read about it on the net.

Mistakes happen. You make sure your standards agencies make more thorough checks in the future and the problems solved.

Here is the deal. You think we stupid? we show you. We know the cheap toy companies you contracted with use lead paint. We were going to shut them down. We don't allow them to sell their products here. If you want to buy from them okay. Help Our cause. You whole generation of kids grow up autistic and stupid and we grow up untainted and smart and take over world. We don't need USA.

*edit* It would take what, 3, 4 well placed people to make this happen?
MissMelsWell
well, here's what I see as the problem.

Almost nothing is manufactured in teh USA anymore. We've become something of a country that deals more in IP (Intellectual Property) we're almost forced to buy overseas products. China has a lot of people, a lot of factories and a populace that will work for next to nothing.

Our economy is such that no one here wants to work in a Barbie Doll factory. We can't pay people a living wage to put the heads on Barbie. If we did, we wouldn't be able to afford a Barbie.

The lead in chinese made products/toys is due to the fact that the chinese companies are looking to cut corners. Lead paint is CHEAP. Matel makes Barbie if I'm not mistaken. A US company. We have in part ourselves to blame for not overseeing the Chinese manufacturing better. We DO pay corporate employees at Matel quite well here to oversee what those plants are doing, they messed up.

Don't think this isn't costing the Chinese companies money. It is, lots of it. They now have TONS of stock they can't sell to anyone, they paid their people for tons of work that's useless, they have to get rid of the tainted materials they bought... they're losing money. People who bought those dolls will sue Matel, Matel in turn seek damages in some form from the factory and the factory will likely agree since they will want to keep Matel's business.

Now, I have two little neices, I do purchase a few things for them for Christmas since their family celebrates the holidays. I have purchased them toys made overseas, but not from China. I've found a local specialty toy store that has a contract with an Ashram in India, a village really, that makes gorgeous hand made natural wood, natural dye toys. Truly, they're stunning. The proceeds go to the village to educate their children, bring in fresh water, and good food. It's a community run operation. (my mother vistited the Ashram a few years ago, and we know it's legit).

I also have a tendency to purchase toys made in Germany. They're extremely expensive.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not in favor of the problem with our debt at this point. But we're in something of a catch-22 in this country. We've exported all our low unlivable wage jobs, but bringing them back and trying to find workers to work at an unlivable wage is impossible and raising their wages would cause goods to cost a WHOLE lot more (see for example, toys made in germany). I don't know what the answer is, but we're in something of an impossible situation here.
joc
In reply to Ms Wells,

You pretty much nailed it sister! thumbsup.gif

I think the problem will work itself out. Heads of Chinese Companies will roll....hopefully not literally, but probably...and the American Idea of ChildProof toys will become predominate thinking in the Chinese Manufacturing Industry.

I think it's great to buy from China. They produce goods that are much higher quality and at a better price than just about any other country in the world. And they are very nice people. In fact, in all of my dealings with people, I have yet to find any who are more polite than the Chinese. (please spare me the stories of rude Chinese people...I'm sure someone has some). I think, in reply to Unlimited's original post...that the Red Army has nothing to do with Manufacturing in China.

Why do we have to have 15 barbies, though? Why do you have to have 5 winter coats, why do we have cheap chinese sunglasses we just lose and replace every year? Why do we buy a 10 dollar watch every year, instead of one 100 dollar watch that lasts for 10 years?

Should't the philosophy, in today's world of polution and garbage filled landfills, be one of buying ONE thing and taking care of it for a long time?

I think that the problem is not so much that stuff would cost more if made someplace else besides china, but that it would cost more and force us to take care of our possessions, which we have entirely too many of anyway. How much junk do you have in your house that you don't need? How much cheap junk do you just allow to break and then you throw it out? I say that's a false economy. Americans have too much debt, we can't stop buying stuff. In addition to "No china Christmass," I've saved, literally, a thousand dollars by having a "no buy November" where I didn't buy anything I didn't absolutely need. I'm going to extend it into a "No Junk January."

Now, thanks to "No buy November," I could afford a 50 dollar barbie, and I would damn well take care of it. (I don't really want a barbie, but you get it.)

Ugh...

Seriously though, how many problems would have a partial solution in making and buying fewer, but better made and more expensive things?

Less garbage. Less industrial polution. less packaging to throw out. More pride in owning something of quality. A feeling of owning things earned, instead of cheap crap that anyone can afford easily and therefore never really appreciate....etc. etc.

I'm telling you, I couldn't believe how much I saved in November when I didn't buy a single thing I could do without. It really opened my eyes to how much stuff i buy just to buy something.

Key words for Christmas!

You are of course correct. If one goes about the business of buying good quality merchandise, eventually what one winds up with is a good quality house full of good quality merchandise. The opposite of course applies without even being said.

But...we are dealing here with a ...push button, satisfy me NOW, mentality of World Opinion. Save up and buy something good? That will last? No...I want it NOW! With whatever money I have NOW I want it NOW!

Go figure! But that's the world we live in today. New Millinium Philosophy: Give me cheap crap NOW dammit!

Yes Yes Yes Yes!!!

You're right!

We DON'T need 15 Barbies, we don't need huge homes that we only use 1000sq ft of, we don't need four $200 TV's, we SHOULD be buying high quality clothing even if it costs more, but we should buy less of it.

I DO live by this philosophy (oddly, it's a tenet of my faith).

But, this isn't a change in manufacturing, it's a change in the American way of thinking and crazed consumership.

I make a very very good living by most people's standards. I do not take extravagant vacations, I don't own more than one car, I own a home that's 5 times smaller and cheaper than I could afford, I buy high quality expensive, well crafted goods. I live on a lower-middle class income. Most of the rest of my income goes to charity. I have no debt (aside from my small fixed rate loan on my house) even despite living on a small yearly budget. THAT in my opinion is the American Dream.

You have NO idea how many seemingly bright people think I'm a martyr or nuts. OR they think I'm pretentious because I'm walking around in hand crafted italian shoes that originally cost close to $500. Nevermind that they're 6 years old and look like new because I take good care of them.

It's cool to see someone else that's doing what I see as the right thing.

So next time I'm just gonna give them boxes and let their imagination run wild will it be a fire truck or spaceship or castle lol.

Dad did just that, along with a big bouquet of daisies, and I put those boxes together into a rockin' cool fort on our covered patio. I think I played in those damn boxes for a couple of years. LOL.
