Why do we have to have 15 barbies, though? Why do you have to have 5 winter coats, why do we have cheap chinese sunglasses we just lose and replace every year? Why do we buy a 10 dollar watch every year, instead of one 100 dollar watch that lasts for 10 years?
Should't the philosophy, in today's world of polution and garbage filled landfills, be one of buying ONE thing and taking care of it for a long time?
I think that the problem is not so much that stuff would cost more if made someplace else besides china, but that it would cost more and force us to take care of our possessions, which we have entirely too many of anyway. How much junk do you have in your house that you don't need? How much cheap junk do you just allow to break and then you throw it out? I say that's a false economy. Americans have too much debt, we can't stop buying stuff. In addition to "No china Christmass," I've saved, literally, a thousand dollars by having a "no buy November" where I didn't buy anything I didn't absolutely need. I'm going to extend it into a "No Junk January."
Now, thanks to "No buy November," I could afford a 50 dollar barbie, and I would damn well take care of it. (I don't really want a barbie, but you get it.)
Yes Yes Yes Yes!!!
You're right! We DON'T need 15 Barbies, we don't need huge homes that we only use 1000sq ft of, we don't need four $200 TV's, we SHOULD be buying high quality clothing even if it costs more, but we should buy less of it.
I DO live by this philosophy (oddly, it's a tenet of my faith).
But, this isn't a change in manufacturing, it's a change in the American way of thinking and crazed consumership.
I make a very very good living by most people's standards. I do not take extravagant vacations, I don't own more than one car, I own a home that's 5 times smaller and cheaper than I could afford, I buy high quality expensive, well crafted goods. I live on a lower-middle class income. Most of the rest of my income goes to charity. I have no debt (aside from my small fixed rate loan on my house) even despite living on a small yearly budget. THAT in my opinion is the American Dream.
You have NO idea how many seemingly bright people think I'm a martyr or nuts. OR they think I'm pretentious because I'm walking around in hand crafted italian shoes that originally cost close to $500. Nevermind that they're 6 years old and look like new because I take good care of them.
It's cool to see someone else that's doing what I see as the right thing.
