Dorset, Vt. - A horse was rescued after accidentally taking an icy plunge in a swimming pool. Jet, a 6-year-old quarterhorse, walked onto the frozen in-ground pool and broke through six inches of ice into about 3 1/2 feet of water, becoming trapped.

"It just looked like a meadow to him, and he stepped on the ice," said his owner, Janet Waite.

The animal shook uncontrollably and was losing strength as several rescue attempts failed.

Finally, rescuers broke the ice in a corner of the pool and got a rope around the horse's neck, pulling him to safety and wrapping him in a blanket.

He was taken to a veterinarian and treated for a cut to his left hind leg.

Very lucky horse, but why wasn't the pool drained? That could have been a child.

i dont think a child would break 6 inches of ice quite like a horse can..
although the area should have been fenced or sectioned off

And what about a fence? In indiana the law states you must have a six-foot fence with a gate that locks around your pool......

I'll bet that there will be a fence going up pretty quick.
