I remember when I was a child, maybe
about 5 years old, My mother brought
home a painting of a little girl with
a rabbit in her lap, she put the
painting in the living room of our
home.
I know this sounds silly, but if you,
myself or anyone is in that room alone
no matter were you are in the room her
eyes are always on YOU!
I was scared to death of that painting
when I was a child, and as I grew I
found ways to avoid being in the room
with it alone, or would try to never
look at it.
At our last family reunion. I found out
that my 3 older sisters all had the
same feelings about that painting.
We talked about it for hours and then
Mom jumped in to say "you're all nuts
I love that painting".. we all laughed
it off and that was the end of the
discussion.
The painting is still in the same place
and even though I am 38 now, I found
myself trying to avoid looking at it.
and could still sense the fear I had of
it as a child.
I think it is the fears we have as
children that we bring into adulthood
that can create the illusion of ghosts!
is it really all just in our minds?
I'd love to burn that painting anyway!

Hi Gazz,
I had a similar experience with a painting when I was likkle. The eyes did seem to follow you around the room. But that's a sign of a good painting ~ if the eyes appear so life-like that they appear to watch!

PS My picture was of Snow White ... gave me the screamin'-ab-dabs!

Yep. My mom used to have a freaky painting of a little girl swinging. Anywhere you were in the room, it seemed like it was staring at you. I agree with dancin'hamster, it is a sign of a very good painting.
However, when you have dolls that seem to be watching you wherever you stand, that is not a sign of good. It is pure evil!

my father had had a picture at the top of the stairs for years before i was born, but one day when i was little i said to my mum that i hated that painting and she said she did too! years later when we talked about it my mum said that it made her feel uneasy, as it had done with me, but hey it was only a painting wasn't it?
it was a painting of a woman with dark hair with an ermine stole around her against a backdrop of dark stormy water, why my dad had it i will never know!

Its all in your mind. If you notice with most paintings the eyes follow you. I can remember a painting my mom had, some freaky 70's tat of a woman and she unnerved me as a child always following me around the room...yuk!

I always remember my R.E teacher mentioning a technique artists used by streching the eyes in a painting to make them appear to follow you.
It makes sense a painting of Jesus following you around the room gives an impression of an omnipotent (i think thats the word) being.

It is true. I think they were just painted like that right? Or so I would like to believe that they were. It feels like you're being watched. Creepy...

Scariest paintings of all are those 'Crying Child' paintings. They feature a cutesy kid with tears in its eyes and were painted in the 50's or 60's. They are meant to bring really bad luck?

Very true, eyes following you around the room is a sign of a good painting (the Mona Lisa for example).
Some paintings can be very sinster, I can remember from when I was a kid a that some saint depecting in a stained glass window looked very sinister/severe gave me the willies - may be that's what was intended.
