I'm not sure how many are Atheist in England... I've never really made it an issue to ask people their beliefs before or after talking to them.

Of course not everyone dislikes atheists, but it is undeniable that atheists are not popular at all, anywhere, especially in the States.

That intrigues me a bit. Why are atheists seemingly so disliked in the States? Is it due to some vague idea of atheism threatening to destroy the social structure, or some silly notion that atheism = communism?

The States are a theo-democracy - IE you can only be in a political power if you're religious and praise jesus.

It's a combination of religious propaganda and the cold-war propaganda of communism and its causes.

When I was a christian (I thought I was) I didn't dislike Atheists but I didn't trust them & thought they were only concerned with sex, selfishness & money. I assumed they had little or no morals.

They are analytical & sober (in their views) and often quite moral as in not harming others.

I can relate best to agnostics though. Nothing is an absolute yes or no. No black & white.

I like that.

I dont and never have in my life lived in ENGLAND

But here in N.Ireland it is all mainly 95% based on christianity....the odd muslim and hindu live here as well...but for many years all we ever knew was christianity...

I doubt i have met an atheist in real life..heck I have met a Jew once...but thats it

the only time I ever got to speak with atheists, was on here

Im glad I have met some...end off

Maybe because it's based on the top 50 countries of atheist/agnostic populations...

The Republic of Ireland is primerily Catholic... So, no chance of them being in the top 50 countries.

Britain doesn't include Ireland - that'd be the useage of United Kingdom. Britain refers to the single Island that England, Scotland and Wales sits upon.

I think people 'fear' and harbor anger at atheists for one reason - they might be right.

and I thing the reverse is also true , you see atheists go out of their way to argue religion right here on the boards, why ? - because there just may be a God.

when you can't prove or disprove , both sides are skittish.
tipsy_munchkin
If those are accurate figures which i shall assume they are. I am actually suprised. I know there is a strong influence of religion in America but i didn't realise it was that much more religous than we are here. For me though most people i know are agnostic with a good few atheists. Most people i do know that are christian are not pushy in their views so many would not know they are religous. Not bexuase they feel any need to hide this opinion but simply becuase it is taken as a personal belief and faith so only ever discussed if someone has asked a direct question concerning it. Most people i know never even realised my ex husband was a practicing catholic but our difference in belief was never as inssue between us. laugh.gif just lots of other stuff.

I read some poll results a while ago that showed that all continents except Europe were becoming more religious. Religion was declining in Europe, if I remember correctly. I'll see if I can find the link again.

chok had as much to right state wether he came accross atheists in Englad as you did to state who you met where you are. I read that as a freindly reply. You said there aren't many atheists where you are and he replied that he doens't know if there are many where he is as it's not a topic much discussed. I can't see why you are taking offence. He certainly wasn't 'banging on about england' he was merely stating where he is in the world so that his comment could be taken in better context.

And christians never ever laugh and mock other beliefs??

I don't think it goes the other way around. Atheists such as myself don't hang around here because there might be a god.

And atheism isn't based on the will to disprove the existance of god, but rather on the fact that religion is totally absurd, arbitrary, destrictive and completely incapable of giving any answers to any of life's questions.

there is no need to get all upset I was simply making a suggestion about how I saw the situation and felt you had jumped on his post having misunderstood it. I personally can not see how you read it as him implying you were in England. Me stating that opinion is in no way implying he can't speak for himself. I also don't see why me pointing out that you may have misunderstood his intentions is any reason to attack me.

Also you were not engaging in a discussion with chok about his opinions but debating the comment with a third party. I was merely agreeing with the way raptor interpreted this interchange. I am sorry you thought this was offensive.

also nowhere anywhere on these site or on here or in real life did say i hated atheist. i said they are to sensitive and some disrespect people of religion. that's hating them? i tell them that all the time. and i didn't aim it at all atheist either, key words i've said A FEW, SOME. just like SOME christains and A FEW muslims are idiots.

You dont have to utter the word I HATE THEM...all you have to do is blame them for most of the hate that you believe that happens..and BINGO anyone can read between the lines

ehh what in the name of mash potatoes are you on about?? a FEW muslims are idiots but SOME christians are idiots ?? why are there only a FEW muslims that are idiots....and why only some christians??

you made muslims look worse than christians ...why not just say - A number of both christians and muslims are idiots??? <----might have worked

Let me guess you have muslim and a heap of christian friends too?? laugh.gif do either of them like marmite?? tongue.gif

They arent popular where I come from...you would hardly meet an atheist over here

I'm not sure how many are Atheists in England... I've never really made it an issue to ask people their beliefs before or after talking to them.

(Read it all, not just a clipping~)

To which then Tiggs linked Me to the "Top 50 countries with the highest populations of Atheists/Agnostics" (notice "TOP 50 COUNTRIES".) To show me the percentge of Atheists located in Britain in the 2005 consensus (<< Probably the wrong word. But it's the only word popping up in my head that refers to a large scale questionaire type of thing.)

I swear there's some sort of paranormal thing going on when we read each others initial posts... I'd ask if you agree'd, but then there's that paranormal thing.
