Alturas, Calif. - A 73-year-old man is in jail after authorities say they discovered a cache of illegal guns and other weapons, including a hand grenade, at his home.

Glenn Edward Daley, who calls himself "Bunker Bob," pleaded not guilty to 44 felony counts, including being a felon in possession of firearms. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Modoc County Undersheriff Gary Palmer described Daley as a survivalist who once threatened a sheriff's deputy with a machete.

Daley placed the weapons, ammunition and four 500-gallon fuel tanks in strategic places on his property and stockpiled enough food to last two years.

yeah - i know a dude like this. he scares the sh** out of me. he has a classIII weapons dealing license, so all the stuff he has is legal, but OMG, why??? cuz has the type weapons that the military is using over in iraq. he has 3rd generation night vision, fully automatic machine guns with silencers & lazer optics, tactical shotguns, some kind of netting that you can string up in the trees & it blocks radar, ect. it's pretty cool, but like i said, WHY??? i just don't understand why some regular ole' folks feel the need to have this sort of stuff. it's scary.

I really don't want to defend the CT-ers here, but the thought process goes like this:

If/when the evil government comes to get him, he will be prepared to defend himself. Or, when the next great disaster hits, and society is destroyed and we are all stuck in a Mad Max-type world, he will be able to survive. Considering the arsenal, he won't just survive, he will thrive.

Howzat for a description of why?

Uh-Oh
Mad Max? The government? And here I thought he was preparing for the zombies.

Or maybe it's something as boring as the guy just likes weapons. A lot.

You don't know what a survivalist is do you?

He had four 500 gallon fuel tanks and enough food to last for two years and more than likely water. He doesn't just 'like' weapons.
Uh-Oh
Note the 'maybe.' Heaven forbid someone throw another suggestion out there.
Michelle
Anyone that calls himself 'Bunker Bob' leaves little room for other interpretations.

If it walks like a duck....
Uh-Oh
Okay, but it doesn't necessarily mean he's delusional. That's all I was trying to say in the first place. Done now?
Michelle
I don't think he's delusional...some people just stash more than others. thumbsup.gif
Uh-Oh
Very true. yes.gif

LOL, my grandparents owned a ranch in NE Washington state, very near the Idaho border. The whole area is a haven for Survivalists like Bunker Bob.

Anyway, I knew serveral survivalists, they frequently would rely on my grandmother during emergencies. They tend to live off the grid and while I'm all for alternative lifestyles, these guys were ALL paranoid, dellusional, and potentially dangerous in my opinion.

When I was about 9, my friend and I were out tromping around in the hills (her family also lived off the grid, but that was more for religious reasons--old order Mennonite), and a Survivalists we called "Skunk Man" actually SHOT at us when we accidentally crossed over on to his property. It was READILY apparent that we were little girls, my friend Lisa was in her little pinnafore dress with a little cap! We were 9!

Skunk Man wasn't the only one we had run ins with out there, and every single one of those nutbags had HUGE caches of weapons. My grandmother helped them when necessary because she was afriad NOT to. Real Survivalists, like Bunker Bob, are by-in-large crazy.

I have a neighbor, that used to be a cop, that has some property and stashes just in case. He goes to these big surivalist training/reunion type secret camps, James Bond type hiding places for guns all over his house. It took a long time to get to know him, but he's not as strange as I thought at first. He likes for people to think he's a little crazy. laugh.gif

Edit:I have a sneakin' suspision that they didn't actually shoot AT you, but it sure did work to scare you away, didn't it? tongue.gif

i'll go ahead and say it. the guy i was talking about that know that is like this IS paranoid, delusional & a little crazy. it's just not normal to have all that stuff. i have a gun (one) for personal protection. i don't see the need for 30 guns & bombs & sh!t like that though. to each his own though.

Just because the one you knew was delusional, doesn't mean they all are. I'm sure that we can all agree on that. Bunker Bob might be crazy and he might not. We don't know anything about him other than what that article says. So assuming that this guy, that none of us know, is a delusional nutcase just isn't right. I guess that won't stop people from doing it though.

Who says there is a need? I don't know Bob's reasons for having all those things, but I do know some people (who aren't crazy, for the record tongue.gif ) who have quite a collection of weapons. Why? The answer is simple. It's because they like them. Some people like art, some like fancy cars, and some people gather books from all around the world. And then some collect weapons. It's not about needing them, it's about having an interest in them. I have plenty of swords, daggers, and axes around my house. It doesn't mean I'm crazy. It doesn't mean I'm planning on fighting off someone with them. It means I like the way they look. I don't know why Bunker Bob would keep around so much food or fuel, but keeping around a bunch of guns just doesn't strike me as all that odd.

If and when this nation (and the world) collapses, those things he had are all that will be worth anything.

i know what you're saying. i'm saying the guy i know like that is crazy. if you knew him you would agree. i also said "to each his own". i'm not hatin' on him. i was saying this in response to him having this stuff for when society collapses & the evil government comes for him. you know, the mad max mentality. people like this just seem dangerous to me. even if they're not crazy now, what if they go crazy one day & have all of this stuff at their disposal??? i wouldn't want to be around when this guy has a REALLY bad day. it just seems almost "cultish". me/us against the world. everyone is out to get me/us kinda thinking. i'm not too concerned about you "losing it" one day and going into a mall & killing everybody with a dagger. military type assault weapons are another story though.
Uh-Oh
But you don't know if the guy believes that the government is out to get him! laugh.gif Oh, I give up.

In response to that you said 'They are paranoid & delusional.' That includes Bob, and come to think of it, a lot of people you know nothing about... blink.gif

Then again, now that I re-read, I guess you just meant that particular group of people that believe that the government is after them and not everyone with a stockpile of weapons. I guess I just misunderstood you. Sorry about that.

DigitalDreamer -
-Gasp- Oh no, I used a word! The horror. It's an old saying around here. If someone doesn't want you to do something, the response is sometimes like, 'Heaven forbid I try to help!' It really has nothing to do with God, Satan, or Bunker Bob. Just an old saying that's pretty popular around here. The only one trying to bring an actual heaven/hell discussion into the thread seems to be you by taking my words out of context in the first place. hmm.gif

Hell, If I could have a huge weapons cache I would. Has anyone sat behind a .50 cal firing it down range, has anyone been behind a mk-19 chucking 19mm grenades down range. Anyone ever been behind a 249 squad automatic weapon that fires 1000 rounds a minute. Its a thrill!

I loved going to ranges in the army, just sit there and light sh** up. You do not have to be crazy to have a weapons cache, just respect for weapon systems. People often get paranoid about the world coming to an end and why not stock up with food and weapons. Keeps ppl from looting when everything else is hectic. Doubt you would come strolling up with rounds flying by your nugget tongue.gif

yes - that is exactly what i meant. it's hard to express what you're actually trying to say over the net sometimes. no problem though thumbsup.gif . you know, i don't want trouble with a crazy mofo with a house full of daggers & axes anyway tongue.gif laugh.gif
Uh-Oh
Sometimes I read too fast, so that might have been the problem. laugh.gif And don't worry, I'm not that crazy. Yet.

Anyone comes skulking around my place, I'll zap `em with my "Gay Ray Gun!"
I took it from some aliens that landed in my backyard. They were from the planet Poofer.
Danged gay aliens wanted to redecorate my place with pictures of Joan Crawford, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand!
I chased them away with the ol' double-barrel shotgun. It ain't high-tech, but it'll do the job. grin2.gif

My god! How that ghost makes me dread
My attempts to sleep at night, in my bed
All that moaning and groaning
Keep me awake until morning
Oh wait --- it's that couple next door, newly wed!
