Full Version: America's 1st non-white male president

With this coming election America has the possibility of having a president who is a female or not of European descent. Not that we haven't had some wonderful presidents, but it's interesting to think that we might finally have another segment of the population represented. Do you think there's a lot of resistance to having a female or non-white president? How long will it take before the various segments of the population are evenly represented?

Personally I don't care if they are purple and asexual as long as they do what they promise and make a better world for all of us!

I don't care either (hopefully not many people do) but I think the election of someone from another segment of the population will be a great event sociologically. If half the country is female, the normal thing would be to have female presidents on a regular basis.

Obviously there is social resistance to having a president who breaks with the European white male tradition. I'm not asking which segment of the population would produce a better president (*shudder*- racist, sexist crap). I'm asking which group has the least social resistance and will break the barrier.

For example, would there be more social resistance to electing Hillary or electing Obama?

I realize that racially oriented posts often get deleted on this forum. But this question is meant to be about which group faces more social resistance.

I think women face the least resistance... mainly because such a huge segment of the population is female and we know the sex of the president is irrelevant.

It's great to see Barack Obama doing so well. I didn't think America had the political maturity to see how brilliant he is.

I agree with Jody...I'm paying attention to what issues the candidates are bringing to the table, not what they look like or who they are.

Obama is a racist CFR socialist, I would never support him as a president.

Exactly, I dont care if it is a purple monster with 12 fingers on each hand, as long as they deliver on their promises of strengthening America.

Me too. But you KNOW there are folks out there who are looking at what they look like. I think this thread is examining what's going on with those people, not what's going on with us.

Well, smarty pants, last time I checked people have more than one parent. Having one parent of European descent (his mother) makes him of European descent.

I think people have gotten much better about racism & sexism (though there are still many nut cases out there). However, I think people still do alot of racial profiling and assume that people are going to stick with their group. So in this election, for example, I don't think a Hispanic candidate could win because so many people want increased security on the US/Mexican border.
