im sitting here watching "GREEN STREET HOOLIGANS" for like the 100th time,i think when it played in england it was called "THE YANK"..(its about football hooligans)
anyway watching it made me think, the kids yall call hoodies, because they walk around with their hoods on,,,,now is that because if a fashion thing or is it because of all the security cameras yall have watching everything??
courage_now
Mate its cold there, you do know that right?
asc.rudeboy
haha yea but from what i under stand, they refer to thugs/gangstas as we call them to as hoodies,,
and thats what i was asking,,,do they wear their hoods to hide from the cameras or is it a fashion thing,,,like i wear hooded sweat shirts all the time but never put my hood on i wear a beenie if its cold enough to have to keep my head warm....
InHuman
Cause they iz comfortable.

And by beenies to you mean touqes?
asc.rudeboy
beanies,some say woolies

InHuman

That's a toque. mellow.gif

Up here it's cold. If get caught walking home or something without a toque, it's bloody cold and it feels as though your ears will fall off.

QUOTE

eh.

Yeah, I thought there was a separate English word for toque, but it turns out the word is neither French or English. Go figure.
nativechick1989
Yep, thats a toque.

And as Moe said....so fricken cold with the wind chill temps, feels like your ears will fall off.
asc.rudeboy
haha ok so we determind what we call a beenie in the south, and well i guess the west coast (my fiance is from cali and thay call them beenies as well) is also known as a toque,,,,,,so how is that pronounced like (tok)

by underlying questions about hoodies still remain,,,,are they known as hoodies because they are "hoods" short for hoodlums,,or they are thugs that always wear the hoods up on their jackest to cover their faces from the security cameras all over england,,,,,or is it just the fashion over there....man i hope that didnt get confusing haha
when.i.am.queen.
I have always understood that it was derived from wearing hoodies, and that they were just a fashion thing.
While it may be true that that some may wear it too avoid security cameras etc, it would be my guess that the general population use it because of the image which it creates.

And, according to the article in the paper a couple of weeks ago (The Australian, can't remember the exact date) the connection between Hoodie and Hoodlum is just an interesting, if rather unusual, coincidence.

Oh, and for the record, we would usually call a "toque" a beanie here.
And many people wear one underneath their hoodies.
Or at least, the boys do.
asc.rudeboy
oo ok so it just became slang so to speak from the older crowd refering to the younger crowd and their dress

mom would always say,,you and your knucklehead friends...ok so know i understand,,,hoodie dosnt have to mean thug or gangsta just those little basterds down the street haha..thanks queen

o and about the beenie,it has to be real friggen cold for me to throw up my hood over my beenie,,i like to be able to see whats coming from both sides.....i just like the look of a low riding beenie more then the hood...but thats just style and comfort,,

i heard the phrase hoodies soo many time from movies and on this board and it always had a negative statment following it,i thought it was more then it really is i guess.....

Yeah you're right, I wear hoods myself but it's not really about the clothes, the ones you're talking about are called 'hoodies' to avoid any 'politically incorrect' problems.
You're correct, really they're wigger/gangsters etc. Black, white or Asian they all aspire to be American style gangster or Jamaican yardies.
Almost without exception they speak (or try to) with cross between a Jamaican accent and American gangster style.

"Yeah, yeah.. I hear yoU.. Me ain't dOne nothin, ME didn't do nothin..it's all this'n'that you get me? get off mE Case Mon"

Of course, all this would be really comical, if it wasn't for the fact they go around in massive gangs and er stab people. 2007 so far has been the worse year..
Mainly they're wimps.. but they've learned the numbers game (7-40!) estimate. And another thing, when they stab.. they seem to go for the kill aiming for the heart etc

I haven't seen GREEN STREET HOOLIGANS yet but I suspect they probably portrait them speaking with cockney London accents?

Hoodie is just a term for little sh**es who like to congregate around street corners. The film in England is called “Green Street” and seems to be an American version of the film “football factory” and yes Billy they all talk like cockney wide boys and the little hobbit guy makes the worst football hooligan I have ever seen laugh.gif
Chokmah
Both. Fashion, as well as to hide from camera's. CCTV camera's in the shops they rob from, and randomly beat a single person in their groups of 10 or more.

now that makes sence because this is more of what i had im my head from reading other posts.......and reading this also makes me wonder why people make such a big deal about gun control,,yall are a perfect example,,there are no guns so they use knives.,,,and i often hear how violent america is,,but we dont have people getting "glassed" as yall put it or roving bands of hoodies stabbing people.....dont get me wrong we havew more then our fare share of gangs and gang violence but they usually stay in their hoods and tend to beat and kill their own...

Eh, I have over 15+ hoodies and its basically all I wear. Wear em spring, summer, winter, no matter the temp, you will catch me wearing a hoodie.

Why?

Because they are comfortable, just like ppl wear sweat pants, they are comfortable.

I even wear a beanie, my hood up, but its not for any hidden meaning, its just what it is.

Here, we do call kids "hoods". Kids who get in trouble, don't listen to authority etc. However they are mostly skaterish, not even close to being "Thug like".

And no, I am not a wigger/wanna be gangsta. I am educated, I speak as such as well as act as such.

yeah you got it. thumbsup.gif
I mean I wear hoodies but I'm not a hoodie. The way London is set up you don't really get ghettos, it like we all crammed together.
They say at any one part.. your 200 metres away from a sh**hole.
The police are useless.. if you get in trouble.. there's more chance of you getting arrested than them because I'm older. Ie assaulting a minor(s) sounds like a pedophile.. doesn't it.. blink.gif laugh.gif
Even though it's just self-defense. But because the police are so useless they can't catch you either... laugh.gif use the hoodies rules against themselves.
Another thing I've noticed is they dress more or less the same so if there are witnesses..it becomes useless..
"yeah, he was wearing a black hood, Officer and he went that-a-way. any chance of getting him? er..... No? Ok. sorry to bother you"

But at least the police take the time to post signs around... which is nice of them.

Ok, thanks...

Football firms are still around all though the heyday of the violence was in the 80`s and early 90`s but go in a football pub with the wrong football shirt on and you can still get smashed up.

Toque is actually a uniquely Canadian word. It is a mix of our two main languages. I am not sure if other areas took the word. It's pronounced kinda like two-ke.

Most of the kids around here were "hoodies", for all the practical reasons...Warmth, comfortable, and they wear a beanie under the hood....Alot of the skateboarders only wear these, it's a fashion thing and the kids can move very freely...It's funny that your talking about the toque. My grandson calls it this, and when his hockey games are outside he wears one with his helmet...
