Full Version: Small Asteroids Pose Big New Threat
Unexplained Mysteries Discussion Forums > Science > Space and Astronomy

The infamous Tunguska explosion, which mysteriously leveled an area of Siberian forest nearly the size of Tokyo a century ago, might have been caused by an impacting asteroid far smaller than previously thought.

The fact that a relatively small asteroid could still cause such a massive explosion suggests "we should be making more efforts at detecting the smaller ones than we have till now," said researcher Mark Boslough, a physicist at Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque, N.M.

Really disturbing things, asteroids. I've been concerned about them for quite awhile. It's a matter of 'when', not 'if' we're going to get hit again. crying.gif

Hello.
On the evening of Sunday January 25th,2009 a large black asteroid will impact the Earth. This object will impact in water, the middle of the South China Sea. It will seem as though it fell from the Sun.

Classic UM;

Someone can't post something cool and scientific without someone making a prophetic claim, or someone claiming to be an alien. I heart this website. Also, I find it interesting that such small asteroids could cause such a large risk, because obviously smaller objects are harder to detect, and a lot more prevelant than many people realise!

It's incredible how solid matter acumulated in space such as an asteroid can pose so much threats in our lives, it's like our little planet is going through an obstacle course while it completes it's orbit around the sun.

Any asteroid to a certain size can cause alot of damage due to it's tempeture while in the atmosphere and the inmensive force when it impacts the surface. Luckily we have a shield, the atmosphere, but for example the Moon is another case, it having no atmosphere makes it a perfect target, one of the biggest impacts close to our planet happen on the Moon.

Also our dear little moon offers some protection, it bodyguards our planet from other asteroids with it's own gravity, most asteroids close to the Earth end up hitting the Moon instead of the Earth.
