What is art exactly?
I see it in the art gallery and its just paint splatter or a grey canvas and somtimes if your really lucky its white!!
how is paint splatter "Art" I spose what ever makes it art is the enourmous price sticker at the end.

To me "Art" has somthing with MEANING and is paint splatter has meanig please tell me.I knew a lady who has a painting in her living room. she said her grandaughter or somthing painted it for and art competetion It was large and extremly beautiful it was What man did to land.
There was a man standing on a cliff top and in the valley below was all destruction, pollution and death. where ever he went it died. But behind him was a baby whos tear runs down into a little crack and out of the crack is a rose. symbolising hope.
Any way if you had seen this painting you would of been amazed. But she didnt win the competion. someone with a white canvas and few blue lines or somthing won. HOW PATHETIC

you are right...the best art goes unnoticed...i think the judges are afraid to make a stand sometimes...

Everything you draw has more meaning to it than you think.

Art is technique, passion, thought, placement and planning. A white canvas with a few blue lines doesn't do the winning painting any justice...would be better to see a picture of it.

I've been told that I have amazing paintings just because of the way I use color which is an intentional technique of mine. I can put two clashing colors together and make them work. Other people can draw lines that amaze the mind.

Not often is the realistic style of painting accepted these days because it is just that...realistic. Surrealism is another style that isn't generally accepted unless you became famous from one.

People like abstract and non-objective art these days because you have to look at them and think a little.

1. art like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but not always ............ now that aside.

excuse me for being so forward and blunt , but ................. none of you obviously know what art is .

Art coveys ideas not always is it about subject matter. 3 Blue stripes may convey nothing more than weight . or mean seperation or trinity as in religious . Viewed alone or as part of a group. Now I don't always care for 3 blue lines on a white canvas type of work , but I understand it's place.

technique is nothing. really. Anyone can learn it. Yet it is essential to understanding how one wants to paint . Like the old true saying my professor used to say " if one can't draw or has bad drawing skills it will show up in thier work to which they have no business painting / sculpting." or as I like to say " before you ride a horse well you must understand the animal."

Art is like math. Simplicity of an equasion that explains a complex theory is beautiful . this doesn't always translate as something that is beautiful to the eye.

While subject matter , composition , must be observed all rules bend.

realistic painting isn't often accepted these days ?? news to me. same with Surrealism. And viewing a painting , sculpter , installation peice is really only done once . after that you view it through a lense colored by your first impression. All art should make you think be it subject matter , color use , brush stroke , composition ect............. it doesn't matter the style. Some of the most complex works seems simple. A famous example ( because most know it by thinking of it ) is Girl with a Pearl Earring. yet most don't understand why. the sadness of removing art from the classroom. Art is a foundation to free thinking. thinking outside the box.

from color use , pose , the earring and the girl herself - all are striking and mean .

same with Berninis' David ( a personal favorite)

Art depends upon an interpreter. If there in no connection made than it really doesn't make it art to that person or at least make it art to that which the person considers art. Sure it may be to someone else, but everyone seems to have a different interpretation about it. And that is why I think at any given moment anything could be considered art, to any given person. Heck, some might find a toaster, art. It has design, form, function.. why not? Its about an emotional connection on some level.
