In the Beginning

It has been two years and three months since that day. I live with the nightmares that have invaded my waking life, I live with the horrors that have flooded the world. I can tell you everything you need to know about my encounters then. I guess first you should know a little more about me. Hmm, were to start. Well I guess we should start at the beginning. My name is Jason Biggs, or JB or Biggs or just Jay. I am 22 years old and I was a reservist until, well. Anyway I spent the majority of my youth living in a small, but not to quiet, town in the Kawartha Lakes Region. I joined the Army reserve after high school and moved to the smallish city of Barrisburg. When I was 20 I went over to Bosnia for a 6 month tour. When I ‘finished’ my Military career I was a corporal. Ok now you know a little about me.

What happened three months ago was weird, it was horrific and something that just wont leave me alone. It all began…

06:45 - A pink sky filled the horizon as the sun rose above the hills. A man was walking on a sparsely populated sidewalk. “sh**,” he said.

Another man a few inches shorter looked at him and said, “What?”

“Looks like its going to rain, or some sort of hell today,” replied the first man.

“What do you mean Biggs?” asked the second man.

“Have you never heard of the rhyme? A pink sky in morning, a sailor’s warning. A pink sky at night, a sailor’s delight?” the two men walked off the sidewalk into a parking lot towards a building. The shorter man shook his head. “Hawkman you can’t be serious. I learnt that damn thing when I was like two.”

“Truth be told, I might of heard it, just don’t remember it,” Hawkman said as he and Biggs walked through the door of a Tim Hortons. Inside, both of them were surprised due to the small line, luckily for that however because there was only a few people working behind the counter.

Biggs walked up to the cash register, “Can I have a medium Hot Chocolate with a peppermint tea bag, please.”

“That will be a buck 29 please,” said the young woman behind the counter.

Biggs handed over the money, “Hey, where is everyone?”

“There is a bug or something going around,” she replied.

“Odd, I haven’t heard anything of it.” Stated Biggs.

“Ya, its just like in the last two days. Because of it, I’m working a double today and if this continues probably tomorrow as well.” Said the woman as she handed the hot chocolate to Biggs.
Biggs walked towards the window just as an ambulance rushed passed them. Hawkman ordered a double-double and was walking towards the door when he called Biggs. Something had caught his eye on the ambulance, he can’t remember what it was but it caused a gut reaction inside of him, he felt that something bad was coming. He shook it off as if it was nothing.

11:33 – Sitting at his desk Biggs was working through a project that had been given to him. He was not having a good day, a lot of people in his department had called in sick and he was stuck doing all the excess. He was concentrating heavily on the current project to get it done as soon as possible so that he could get to work on the next one. He was oblivious to the world around him at this point, someone could sneak up behind him and he wouldn’t know. His phone rang, he jumped slightly. “****,” he shook his head trying to get his senses before he picked up the phone. “Hello?”

There was a shaky voice on the other end of the line, “Jay?”

“Karen? What’s wrong?” said Biggs concerned.

“Beep…Beep…Beep,” the line was dead.

Jason hung up the phone and picked it back up dialed Karen’s number. It rang once, “Your call can not be completed as dialed, please check the number and dial again.” He hung up the phone and tried again. He got the same message. He thought to himself a moment, then dialed another number.

A female voice on the other side of the line answered, “Hello?”

“Sarah, its Jay,”

“Hey Jay, what’s up?”

“I need you to check on Karen, she just called and sounded scared of something. I asked what it was and the line died on me.”

“Did you try calling back?” asked Sarah with concern in her voice.

“Yes, twice. It wouldn’t connect, rang once and then I got a Computer operators message.”

“Ok, I’ll swing by her place. I’ll bring Josh with me just incase. Ok?”

“Thank you Sarah, keep me posted. Aye?”

“No problem Jay, stay safe.”

“You too Sarah, good luck and thank you again.” Biggs hung up the phone and got back to work. He couldn’t concentrate as he had before. His mind was being invaded by images of his friend and what might have happened to her.

An hour passed as he waited for Sarah or Josh to give him a call. Nothing, until he received a text message from Hawkman, about something totally unrelated, or so he thought. It read, ‘call Sgt. Brisk ASAP’. Biggs thought to himself for a moment then dialed the Sergeants number into his Cell phone. An older man answered on the other end of the phone, “Sergeant Brisk Speaking,”

“Sergeant, its Corporal Biggs. Corporal Hawkman told me to call you,” replied Biggs.

“Yes. Corporal we need you come into the unit, as soon as possible,” stated the Sergeant.

“Serge may I ask why?” asked Biggs.

“Corporal, there is a situation and We need all our personnel, that is all I can say over the telephone.” replied Sergeant Brisk.

“Yes Sergeant, I will be there as soon as I can,”

“Oh and Corporal, bring your FFO, spare boots, socks, t-shirts, a spare uniform and full smallpack.”

“Serge?” asked Biggs surprised.

“I can’t tell you any more then that Corporal. Just get here ASAP,” Sergeant Brisk hung up the phone.

Biggs pondered for a moment why he would need to bring all the kit. His boss walked by his desk, “Mr. Johnstone. I need to take the rest of the day off, something has come up. Something very urgent,”

Mr. Johnstone looked at Biggs, annoyed. “What do you mean you need the rest of the day off!?”

“Well Mr. Johnstone, something urgent and important has come up that needs my attention and I have to go,”

“Fine, just make sure you are caught up on all your current projects by the deadlines.”

“Will do boss,” stated Biggs as he stood up, grabbed his project binder, and turned off his workstation.

12:18 – A black Grand Prix pulled into a parking lot just outside of a small military compound which was located in a sparsely built area of the city. The parking lot was over half full. “sh**, must be something important. If this many people are here,” Biggs informed himself, as he pulled into his usual parking space. As he got out of his car, a truck pulled in. It was Hawkman.

He waited for him, “Hey Hawkman, thanks for the text. Do you know what’s going on?”

“I don’t know man,”

The two men walked into the building. As they walked through the doors a clerk sitting at the front desk was dressed in full fighting order, including gas mask. She also had her rifle on the desk with a magazine in.

Biggs walked up to her, “Whats going on Master Corporal?”

“Biggs get your ass to the RSM’s office, you to Hawkman,”

They walked down a long hall of a building that looks like it was built in the 1800’s. Near the end of it was a sign sprouting out of the wall. It read ‘RSM’, the door was opened and there was an older man yelling at another, younger man, who looked to be in his thirties. “Sergeant Henderson, get those young troops their weapons!”

As Biggs and Hawkman stopped three paces away from the older man, they came to attention, “RSM,” addressed Biggs.

“Ahh, Corporals Biggs and Hawkman. You are both PLQ qualified, correct?”

They both simultaneously said “Yes, sir,”

“Ok, I am assigning you two as Section 2ICs. Biggs, Sergeant Brisk is your IC,”

“Sir,” replied Biggs.

“Corporal Hawkman, Sergeant Hendersen is you’re IC. Understood?”

“Yes RSM,”

“Ok you two Gents better get moving, go to the Parade square.” Hawkman and Biggs replied with a sir, as the RSM walked into his office, as he turned around Biggs saw a rifle was slung around his back.

12:30 – Biggs lined up infront of the weapons vault, with rifle card in hand he gave it to the Sergeant inside. Out came his rifle 94AA01903 with it came his standard bolt, a bayonet, as well as five magazaines.
He proceeded soon after to a table set up just beside the vault. The line up here was negligible, obviously the majority of everyone else had already been through here. On, under, and beside the table was boxes full of ammunition, both for the C7A1 service rifle, C9A1 light machine gun, as well as the C6 general purpose machine gun.

Sergeant Henderson was standing on the other side of the table. Biggs looked at him and asked a simple question, “Sarge, what’s happening,”

“We are getting briefed at thirteen-hundred, just get your ammo and balm up.” said Sergeant Henderson.

Henderson put 15 cardboard boxes, on the outside it read 30 Rounds NATO 5.56mm, and a mag charger. Biggs quickly put them in a small grocery bag that was sitting on the table and looked at Sergeant Henderson, “sh** Sarge, what are we doing making sure the enemy stays dead?” Sergeant Henderson glared at him as Biggs walked away.

With weapons kit in hand and his ammunition in a bag Biggs walked over to his kit, which was placed amongst a bunch of others kit, all of whom were loading Magazines and checking over there kit.

“Charles,” whispered Biggs towards a young private kneeling beside him.

“Yes corporal,” replied the Charles.

“Have you heard what’s going on?”

“I’ve been hearing rumors,”

“Like what,” replied Biggs as he started inspecting his ammunition and charging magazines.

“Well, you know those crazy stories that have been put on the internet about the undead?”

“What, are you saying that corpses are rising from the dead to devour the living, is that what you are trying to say?”

”I don’t know Corporal, all I know is that we are hear loading live ammunition into our magazines with an extra 10 mags worth of ammunition in reserve. What ever it is its big, corporal,”

13:00 – “SECTION IC’S ON ME!” yelled a man who just entered the room. He short in stature but looked quite built. He was wearing full fighting order and couldn’t have been more then 35 years old. On his slip on there were two and a half bars, indicated him as Major.

The Sergeants and Master Corporals scrambled over to him. Once there they all stood in a circle. In all there were a total of four sergeants and three master corporals around the Major.

As the section ICs met with the Major, the rest of the soldiers kitted up loading the rest of there ammunition, along with what ever extra kit they had out, into there small packs. Some of the soldiers brought there fleece, others their thermals, even a few of the more inexperienced soldiers brought their winter coats.

A few more moments passed when Biggs overheard one of the Master Corporals say, relatively loudly, “What the ****!?” He could see in the eyes of the younger soldiers, the ones who had just completed their infantry course the previous summer, there was fear. There was a small amount of fear that dwelled in the back of Biggs head as well, but this was understandable, what could possibly have them loading out in beyond combat load.

The section commanders broke off from the Major. They started yelling out section names, “One Section on me,” yelled out a Sergeant, “Two Section on me,” yelled out Sgt Henderson as he walked to a far corner of the parade square. Biggs started a light jog over to the Sergeant, with all of his kit. He was followed bye another six soldiers. Most of who were privates, young inexperienced.

They all huddled around the Sergeant. “Ok, listen up. Corporal Biggs is a defacto Master Corporal, however you will address him by his given rank. However since he is they highest trained Corporal in this section he is my two IC. Now, what I am going to tell you may sound like ****ing bull but you are going to follow these orders to the letter, Understood?” The section all nodded, some even said Yes Sergeant. “Ok, the government has called up the reserve. Now what does that mean for us? Well we are all here in uniform with a full combat load out, and then some. Our orders are to secure the quarantine the down town core of our fine city, that is the Companies job. We are lucky, we are not going to be sitting at one of the checkpoints, along with three section we are going to be sweeping the core.’

‘This will be a foot patrol gentlemen. The Emergency Measures Act has been enacted and we have orders to search every single building,” Sergeant Henderson was interrupted by Corporal McMillan.

“Sarge, what the hell are we looking for? What the hell is going on?”

“Well corporal, we are looking for suspicious people, those who appear sick. We are in pandemic procedures.”

“Then what’s with all the Ammunition, Sarge?”

“I don’t even know that one, that’s just we were ordered to hand out. Came from the CDS. Now lets get back to the brief. As stated, we are in Pandemic procedures, we are looking for citizens who are sick. They may be bleeding profusely from wounds that are caused by the illness. They most likely will be slow moving and will likely have discoloured skin.” He looked down at his field message book. “Ok, we are not to approach the individuals we are to radio in there location to HQ who will send in a special HAZMAT unit to pick them up. We are told this disease is highly infectious.

“As stated we are a sweep team we are going to sweep the down town core for anyone infected with this thing get those special guys in bunny suits to come in an pick them up. Understood?” Everyone nodded in acknowledgment, “Ok we will be loading up into ML’s when they get here. Just enjoy a bit of R and R before we get order to move,”

13:42 – “Lets go, lets go,” Yelled the Regimental Sergeant Major, from the entrance of the parade square. Everyone inside stood up grabbed the rest of their kit, threw it on them as fast as they could and made a beeline for the door.

Outside was four large Medium Logistics Vehicle Wheeled (MLVW). Each of them had the canvas net overtop. The soldiers from inside poured out of the building and loaded up into the large trucks according to section, from right to left. Starting with one and two sections in the right most truck and ending with seven section, with the command element in the left most truck.

The Major looked around and climbed into the last ML on the far left. Right after he did this that truck lurched forward then turned out of the parking lot. It was followed by the remained trucks along with three smaller vehicles one was a G-Wagon, and the other two were Milcots. The convoy moved down the road and rumbled on towards the downtown core.
