Ghost ships are probarlly the most underated ghost legends on this site and i want to know why.
Tales of mysteries ,phantom crew and crew dissparences of freighters told by a sea fisherman or rumnut.
Are they any stories or legends of these things?

Ghost planes or U.F.O's are even less talked about but......planes that fly with no piloets in them?
who knows..
ravergirl
a ghost ship...um would probably be the scariest thing ever. and um i saw that movie and it is. have there been a lot of ghost ship sitings?.....wooooooooo...it's getting creepy. not sarcasm, saying woo works.
RX-7

There was one that recently came drifting into Australia with all its fishing load and personal belongings still intact. It's a very unusual occurrence that still manages to defy all reasonable explanations.

Hi wavey.gif

Since I've been here ghost ships pop up from time to time, here's a thread I started a while back

http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/forum...=107163&hl=

but if you use the search engine and search Ghost and Hauntings for "ships" you'll find all sorts of tales and legends.

Yeah, Ghost ships have always been interesting to me too. I don't think we hear much about them because perhaps there aren't many here with such specific personal experiences to post?

As for planes, I have read in my own local history that there was a phantom world war plane ( not sure which war) known to be seen crossing a specific route and there is raw history in the books to back up that a few planes crashed in that time period in the nearby but remote hills... I will need to find the story in the book I have and tell it properly thumbsup.gif

I have a book called "Unsolved Mysteries" and here is a description of what happened: On September 1916, 6 german planes were returning from the French lines and then a two-seater plane flew out of the clouds and the German planes almost got hit and then they started shooting the back of the plane, but the plane didn't alter its course. Suspecting a trick, one of the planes flew only a few yards separated the planes. When he looked into the cockpit he saw two dead men still strapped to their seats,"their sightless eyes staring ahead, their uniforms smeared with blood from a multitude of wounds." The German pilot tipped his planes wings as a sign of respect." The pilotless British plane continued to fly for another 40 minutes until the engine ran out of fuel. Even then it did not crash but glided smoothly down to a safe landing in an open field."

That is an awesomely spooky story!!! Thanks for posting it! Now, I have to go look up more.

I think the Edmund FitzGerald (like the song) was a pretty famous ghost ship but I honestly do not know much about this!

this is one of many sinkings in the great lakes...it sunk in lake superior carring something like 26 tons of iron ore and around 30 people..the boat was overloaded and ran into a gale with 90 mph winds causing 20+ ft swells...the boat had some damage in the storm and was overcome by the waves...no survivors...the wreck was found by a navy patrol plane three days after it was missing...the owners decided not to try to raise the boat or try to recover the bodies and have left it as a memorial to the men who died...this is the short version...

in case you don't already know, i am a store house for really useless information...

Ms. Mugsie
I've read about a number of Phantom/Ghost Ships, as well as planes, cars, trains, carriages/wagons, over the years [began studying/researching the PN in the 70s], and do have info on same in my research files [notes, articles, links, references etc], books, magazines, journals, but it will take me some time to find all [I've accummed a lot of material]. Below are a couple of articles/links I came across not long ago, and a few that came up when I did a quick google of names/legends I could recall reading about [easier then trying to find the info in my files/books etc lol]. original.gif

Yes the Edmund Fitzegerald is, but one, of many sinkings that have occurred in the Great Lakes, and is listed among a number of the 'phantom' ships that have been seen. Apparently the Fitzgerald was seen a decade after it's infamous sinking. The oldest of these ghost ships is the Griffon [launched in 1678], which vanished on the return leg of her maiden voyage. No trace of the Griffon was ever found, however, recently a very old hand-carved mast sticking out of the muck by divers was found which is a possible candidate for the wreck.
"Sailors have seen a ghostly apparition of the Griffon under full sail on several occasions crossing lake Michigan. At least 10 more modern ghost ships are occasionally sighted plying the lakes, even the Edmund Fitzgerald was sighted a decade after its infamous sinking".

According to an article by J.M. Sinclair at Paranormal news [which also notes the above info], stories do not end with the ships.

"A diver working the Lake Superior wreck Emperor in the late 1980's is said to have seen the ghost of a a crewman lying on a bunk looking at him. Easily the strangest and most macabre story is the tale of Grandpa. The great lakes are very cold in the depths, so cold that the frigid water will preserve almost anything through natural refrigeration. This includes human remains, and the story goes that there is a preserved body in the engine room of the wreck of the SS Kamloops, which went down in 1927. Locals and divers call him Grandpa, and he is known to float quietly behind divers, following them as they swim around the compartment. Perhaps this is just due to currents created by the divers, or maybe its something else, but the effect has scared the daylights out of more than a few divers. All the better, as they probably shouldn't be disturbing a wreck that clearly is also the final resting place of preserved human remains."

"Sightings are almost common, and show no signs of slowing. What's most interesting is that, unlike the oceans, the majority of the ghost ships seen on the lakes are modern, with many having been lost within living memory."

I must admit, I think I'd get darn close to being able to walk on water if I were diving and turned to find the remains of a perserved body following behind me whilst swimming amid [checking out] a wreckage lol. blink.gif

Here are a few more links to articles on phantom/ghost ships, as well as ships found floating adrift [aka ghost ships] with no sign of the crew/passangers leaving a mystery as to the how/why they vanished [first link notes same]. One of the most famous 'ghost ships' is the Mary Celeste [1872]. More than 30 books, two movies, and several documentaries have focused on the ghost ship Mary Celeste, yet no generally accepted explanation has been put forward for why Captain Briggs, his wife, daughter, and seven crewmen, abandoned ship [they vanished w/o a trace].
The 2nd link that follows provides detailed information, facts about the case, evidence of a Sea Quake etc, it's a longer article but a very interesting read IMO [author: Captain Dave Williams].

Article on 'Ghost Ship: The Flying Dutchman' the phantom ship sighted in Africa's Cape of Good Hope [the 'Flying Dutchman' is the captain, the ships name was never revealed in the legend], while most agree the 'history' is legend, the Flying Dutchman has been sighted by reliable witnesses [article contains a log of selected sightings, source of info provided; Guiley, Rosemary Ellen, The Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Spirits (Facts on File, Inc., 1992)].

Another article [source same as above]; Ghost Ship: The Palatine, Phantom Schooner sighted off of Block Island, Rhode Island. Some regard the Palatine a legend, however, there is historical proof of her existence. The fiery phantom appears off the isle.

Another from the same author [Jill Stefko Ph.D., is a Shamanistic practitioner, Reiki Master, parapsychologist and retired mental health counselor] as the above two, regarding sightings of Lincoln's Apparition/ghost. Includes mention of the sighting, each April, of a 'phantom funeral train', which, allegedly, is said to travel the same route that Lincoln's body was taken to for internment [it leaves from the District of Columbia, travels through New York state towards Springfield, but it never arrives there].

Stefko writes; "There are two versions of the spectral train. According to one version, there are two trains. One tugs several cars, draped in black, including a military car from which the sounds of mournful music emanate. The second pulls only one flatbed car bearing the Lincoln’s coffin. It is said timepieces stop while the train is passing by."

It does make you wonder if some, or most, are just illusions/mirages/hallucinations, or if they are an imprint of energy [time/space] that somehow loops [if you will] in a way that, for a brief time becomes visible to the eye?
Although with some accounts, the phantom image?, has lasted for an extended period of up to two hours or more before vanishing, and other times the same apparition has appeared for only moments or minutes, all seemingly at random thus no set looped pattern [if that's the right term?].

And does/can an illusion account for the instances where another ship approached the phantom ship [though at the time the crew thought it was an actual ship], and only once it was, or almost was, along side of her did she vanish? A phantom ship off in the distance could well be an illusion/mirage on the horizon, but somehow it doesn't seem fitting to call it an illusion when collectively witnessed in very close proximity like that.

And what of phantom planes, trains, cars, etc, can they all just be illusions, misinterpretations, or hallucinations, how can so many experience the same thing, especially when the sightings occur around the same time each year [for e.g.], and I can't see how these mundane causes can account for the stopping of timepieces during sightings [like the Lincoln case for eg], if same has indeed occurred that is? I don't think all can just be chalked up to 'legend/lore' either, given reports [with some] include sightings by several reliable witnesses, and historical info is known [or has been found] for some of these cases.

Perhaps some of the theories that abound regarding parallel universes, and types of, are closer to the truth of what some of these mysterious phantom sightings are? Interesting mysterty to ponder no matter how you look at it, IMO. original.gif Sorry for the long post.
