okay. i have read that smelling smoke when there is nothing present can be a sign of an allergy or epilepsy . so first off if this keeps happening i would get it checked by a physician . just in case .
Allergies, many kinds of sinus issues, bronchitis, brain tumors, migraine (or migraine without pain), there are many conditions that can cause olfactory hallucinations. I wouldn't worry too much but as spirtual soul mentioned, if it becomes an ongoing occurance it's a good idea to mention this to your doc. I occasionally smell kerosene, it's very annoying.
Has your friend ever had a house fire? Just asking because we kept a couple of things from our burned out place, mostly photos and momentos. We stored them in "air tight" containers and never smelled smoke. But for many years after, occasionally somebody would mention smelling smoke in the direction of the containers. We'd sometimes ask visitors, most said no so I guess it was just people with a very sensitive sense of smell.
I'm not saying it's not paranormal. Quite possibly it is. These are just some other possibilities that occurred to me, and best to only talk about what you know, eh?
