Here's an idea... Let's lock her in a room with only a bible for a month... Lets see how much jesus fills her up then. tongue.gif Faith based dieting... That's just the same idea as every other plan like it just instead of a hobby were you'd play games, suck on a sucker, or keep yourself busy in another way just instead keep yourself busy with the bible. No god or anything behind it, it's just a rip off from other diets meant to cash in to the fat believers who want to pray rather then go for a walk around the block.

I do love bacon though... I think that's one thing we have in common. laugh.gif Probably my biggest arguements against the jews and muslims is that no true god would deny you a bacon cheeseburger. laugh.gif

That second link doesn't work. sad.gif

Sorry about that. Here you go

MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — A suburban Atlanta couple was sentenced Tuesday to life plus 30 years in prison in the beating death of their 8-year-old son, a case that prompted authorities to raid the family's church because it supports corporal punishment.

Prosecutors said Joseph and Sonya Smith beat their son Josef, locked him in a wooden box and confined him to a closet for hours at a time before he died in October 2003.

The boys' parents had told authorities Josef had passed out and never regained consciousness after the family gathered in the kitchen to participate in a prayer session with their church via the Internet.

Their attorneys argued the boy didn't die from the injuries, and that the medical examiner failed to perform tests that would have found a cause of his death.

"I think it's serious enough where you should receive the maximum punishment and it should be on top of life," Superior Court Judge James Bodiford told the couple in sentencing them.

The Smiths looked at each other but said nothing as Bodiford imposed the sentences.

About two dozen supporters were in the courtroom, and several friends spoke on the couple's behalf, describing them as kind.

Bodiford called the letters of support for the Smiths "amazing," but said the supporters likely didn't have all the details.

The Smiths are members of the Brentwood, Tenn.-based Remnant Fellowship Church, which grew out of church leader Gwen Shamblin's Weigh Down Workshop, a Christian diet program she created in the 1980s. Former members have said church teachings on discipline include discussion of corporal punishment. Shamblin has said the church leaves discipline to parents and believes in spankings as a last resort.

Although the church was investigated after Josef's death, police testified during the couple's trial they could not find any link between the boy's death and the religious institution.

Tedd Anger, one of the church's leaders, said they still believe the Smiths are innocent.

"We will support the Smiths in any way we can," he said outside the courtroom.

How do you know?

Do you eat pigs and people?

Or are you going by what is said by people who've never eaten a human, but instead base their sayings on a friend of a friend?

On topic; I can't believe the church are sticking with the criminals. Albeit, not surprising.

Gwen Shamblin has some unusual ideas. ... Shamblin promises followers of her diet that, in addition to losing weight, they will be granted eternal life. ... Shamblin's core contention is that the fatness of America is the symptom of a spiritual crisis: overweight people have mistaken a spiritual emptiness for a hunger for food. ... She argues that her method of renunciation can be applied to all manner of other sins, such as alcohol abuse or dependence on prescription drugs or homosexuality or the claims of wives to be on equal footing with their husbands. Having criticized the diet industry for encouraging an impious obsession with food, Shamblin has now unleashed her wrath on the church, which she views as overly permissive.

In 1999, she and a small group of like-minded believers established their own church, the Remnant Fellowship, at which they sing songs of praise and read Scripture and testify about their passionate submission to the will of God. ... "I believe God loves a chocolate brownie with extra nuts and whipped cream," she told me. She argues that diets that encourage careful planning of menus or counting of calories are actually the work of the Devil. "Look at what Satan has done with the weight-loss world," she writes in "The Weigh Down Diet." "He has encouraged dieting, and our flesh has loved it because we did not have to take our heart off food, repent, change, or obey God."

Shamblin takes every word of the Bible as divinely inspired, but she interprets it as if it were a contemporary diet manual. Thus the fatted calf that was prepared for the Prodigal Son is evidence that God approves of filet mignon. Other dietary directives from God that are found in the Good Book begin with original sin--the cardinal instance of overeating--and extend to divine refutations of low-carbohydrate diets. ... In the church that Shamblin attended as a child, women were not permitted to preach. That, she believes, is the way things should be. "How could anyone read the Bible and not see that men are meant to lead?"

She doesn't believe that women should have the authority to teach men, but she presumes to tell people how to interpret the Bible? She even goes so far as to claim that there is a "hierarchy" in the Trinity, with God being at the top while Jesus and the Holy Spirit are at the bottom. That's been a heretical view since the fourth century. It certainly seems as though she thinks that women can teach - so long as she is the woman, that is.

So what was this a freak accident with overzealous worshipping or was this them abusing their child and hiding behind a religious facade? because there are some um interesting practices out there that can get out of hand but aren't meant to be cruel.

I don't know ravergirl. Maybe they thought what they were doing was right, because of their personal interpretation of biblical scripture.

Is there an excuse for stupidity ?

I'm sure there are atheists that abuse their children also, just so you don't get the idea that I think this is purely a religious phenomenon.

But I believe the bible encourages corporal punishment. I call it uncreative, unskilled, lazy parenting.
