Full Version: Can you hear the Humming sound?

I assume that we have probably covered this one somewhere else on the board already but, I don't recall seeing it and I don't want to be a necroposter so, here I go.

It's often referred to as a "distant humming sound". I've also heard it called the Taos Hum. To me it sounds sort of like distant electrical equipment running, like maybe generators. I can actually hear it form my yard in SoWeGa and usually best at night. It's not quite as loud as a conversational voice but, it is distinct in that I can clearly hear it. I've noticed it for a number of years mow but, I never really paid it much attention until I noticed it being discussed on another board. I mentioed it to my wife a few months ago and she said that she could not hear it. Curious.

I'm providing a link to the Wiki page on it. Anyone else hear this sound form time to time?

The Hum is a generic name for a series of phenomena involving a persistent and invasive low-frequency humming noise not audible to all people. Hums have been reported in various geographical locations. In some cases a source has been located. A well-known case was reported in Taos, New Mexico, and thus the Hum is sometimes called the Taos Hum. Hums have been reported all over the world, especially in Europe. A "Hum" on the Big Island of Hawaii, typically related to volcanic action, is heard in locations dozens of miles apart. The Local Hawaiians also say the Hum is most often heard by men. The Hum is most often described as sounding somewhat like a distant idling diesel engine. Typically "the Hum" is difficult to detect with microphones, and its source and nature are a mystery to the listener.

Try this link

I don't know why the other one doesn't work. It was working fine when I put it in but, when I tried it today, it didn't work. I've tried to put it in again. We'll see how it goes this time.

If it still fails, here is what it looks like in my browser....

That always happens to me at like 1:00 in the morning If I'm awake. I like how it sounds "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I hear humming now and then, sometimes it will not go away for weeks. I find that it comes from within me, as it is usually when I have a build up of trapped energy inside my cells. The humm I hear can also be felt of course.

I believe it is something very spiritual, but I have absolutly no control whatsoever over this energy. If I did I bet I could perform miracles or at least power a small city block.

What is that a picture of, the contents of your medicine bag? Just curious.

That's interesting too but, what I was refering to was a low volume, low frequency humming sound.

Similar but, not quite. It sounds like it's a little ways a way and much bigger than a fridge! Good idea though.

I actually heard it sometime yesterday, didn't last very long though

I hear it,LU, just as you describe.
Never during the day.Quite often when i"m trying to get to sleep.
I"ve even asked my wife if she can hear it, but she can"t.
This leads me to believe that its an individual occurance. thumbsup.gif

I hear it all the time, whenever its really quiet, and there is very little to no noise, like right when I wake up, before bed, or when I'm home alone, it's a quiet, deep, hum, right? Yeah, I hear it a lot, or maybe its something different, but it's just like what you said up there.

I was standing outside at around 2AM outside my grandparents house this Christmas break. My brother and I were near the back alley, which has nothing back there. It's a suburban area and the only things I noticed that were electrically active were a few lights. We were just talking and I noticed the hum seemed pretty loud and I don't think I've heard it get so overpowering before. He heard it as well. I assume it's caused by power travelling through electrical wires/devices. Perhaps some of the lights that were around caused it, but I still wasn't able to quite pinpoint the source.

It almost sounds like it's coming from everywhere and not one direct location... so that makes it difficult to find. I've heard the hum in my head from time to time as well... usually laying in bed at night.

I'm almost positive it's caused by electrical fields or something similar....

Can you sing a few bars?

To me it sort of sounds like distant machinery. Earlier, I compared it to the sound of the hum from a bank of generators but, still, that's not quite right.

I've heard it in the country where there were virtually no power lines so, I dunno. Maybe we are each hearing something different.

I've read about it on several other sites where they blame it on every thing from secret underground military bases to machinery in local factories. Oddly enough, when I try to make a recording of it, it doesn't show up on the tape. Posibly because it is a steady drone that could be misinterpreted as background noise in a recording, or hidden under the "tape hiss".

If you remember the sound of a B-17 bomber in those old WWII movies, the way the multi-engines droned on and on in the background when the plane was flying....that's pretty close to what I've been hearing.
